10 GREAT DAYS, 10 GREAT WINES, 10 GREAT STORIES.The Calgary Stampede is an extraordinary story - an event that has come to represent a defining part of this great city and its people. At its heart it pays homage to the pioneer days that Calgary was founded upon - the Wild West, frontier lands, stories of hard work, unyielding perseverance, entrepreneurial spirit and western hospitality. Paying tribute to this rich and proud history, while ensuring we embrace this heritage as we write the next chapters of our story, is what we celebrate during these ten incredible days.

To embrace this spirit we have hand-selected ten amazing wines, each with its own story that celebrates similar values held dear to the Calgary Stampede. These wines and winemakers share a deep love for agriculture and farming along with our values of western heritage, uncompromised quality, and environmentally and socially responsible practices. Far better than us telling their stories however, we are honoured to celebrate our 2015 Winemaker Series and the following incredible people who will join us to share the story of their wine with you…

Merryvale Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley, California, USA 215

Founded on the principle that great wines are born in the vineyard, Merryvale Vineyards has a long-standing tradition of sourcing grapes from exceptional vineyards throughout the Napa Valley. The process for selecting vineyards that are worthy of the Merryvale Vineyard label is an intense, rigorous and exacted process. Careful attention is paid to microclimate, soils and sustainable vineyard management practices. Sites with unique aspects and characteristics coupled with our estate vineyard sources allow us to create rich, balanced and truly expressive Napa Valley wines. The commitment involved in growing grapes for Merryvale - specified by vineyard blocks or even row-by-row selections - result in wines with intense flavors and soft, supple tannin structure.

Van Westen Vineyards Vivacious Pinot Blanc 72 Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada

Like the Calgary Stampede, the Vivacious has something for everyone - crispness, texture, intense flavours and great food compatibility. Pinot Blanc blended with a touch of Pinot Gris. Robert Van Westen makes balanced, delicious wines on BC’s Naramata bench that really showcase the region and just how good Canadian wines can be.

Barolo Classici Tradizionale Piedmont, Italy 144

The story of the Marchesi di Barolo Estate began in 1807 when the wines produced at this estate in Piedmont were first named “Barolo”, after the town they called home. Thus began a tradition like no other, and thus began Barolo’s reign as the “King of Wines”. The Abbona family has run the estate since the late 1800s. Barolo Tradizionale represents a combination of Nebbiolo vines from all the current Marchesi di Barolo vineyards throughout the Barolo region. Rich, earthy and silky with both power and elegance.

Founded in 1886 Angove Family Winemakers is one of Australia’s most successful wine businesses – a fifth generation family company with a tradition of excellence and an eye for the future. Our focus on sustainability in all aspect of our winery and vineyards, will ensure we are here for many generations to come. A blend of 60% Shiraz and 40% Grenache from the Warboys Vineyard. Red with some purple hues. Licorice and spice from the Shiraz combine with the berry fruit of the Grenache.

Barnett Vineyards Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon 205 Napa Valley, California, USA

The Barnett Vineyards are all located at the top of Spring Mountain. The majority of the vineyards are terraced on slopes that are 30 degrees or more. The original estate vines are almost 30 years old and are planted on a 6x10 grid. In the past few years much of the original vineyard has undergone redevelopment and now vines are spaced 4x4. The topography is so steep and the plantings are so closely spaced that traditional farming methods such as tractors and disking are not possible. The Estate Vineyards are completely farmed by hand from bud break until harvest. The vineyards are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

J. Lohr Hilltop Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles, California, USA 118 We prepare our 3,000 acres of estate vineyards using mineral-based amendments such as limestone, marble white and composted waste from previous vintages, years before we plant new vines and throughout the lifecycle of the vineyard. These Cabernet vines are naturally stressed in the dry, often very gravelly and sometimes lime shale-laden soils. Water is at a premium in these vineyards, enabling the viticulturist to fine-tune irrigation, producing the darkest fruit with resolved tannins year after year.

St. Supéry Dollarhide Ranch Malbec Napa Valley, California, USA 121

French businessman, Robert Skalli, with deep roots in the wine industry in Algeria and France, turned his sights westward in 1970. He searched the newly established Napa Valley appellation in California for years, seeking an undiscovered outpost with the ideal climate, soils and topography to grow world-class grapes. He discovered Dollarhide Ranch nestled deep in the northeastern hills and immediately saw the potential the property’s original landowner, Andrew Jackson Dollarhide, had seen more than 100 years earlier. Robert broke ground in 1982, converting the old cattle ranch into 500 acres of rolling grapevines and has been making extraordinary single vineyard wines from the grapes grown in our Dollarhide Estate Vineyard ever since.

The Cazes family has owned Chateau Lynch-Bages since 1939 where they have developed a model of hospitality in the village of Bages, welcoming visitors from around the world to their estate. Owner Jean-Michel Cazes has been at the forefront of the evolution of the Bordeaux vineyards and a leader in the development of vineyards in Southern France and Portugal. This full-bodied warmly structured Pauillac wine comes from the Cazes vineyards in what is Bordeaux's most famous appellation.

THE DUKE’S LISTAficionados of the classic western movie know that “The Duke” refers to the one and only John Wayne - considered by many as the icon who defined the on-screen cowboy. That trademark swagger, that grit, that charm, that character voice and grizzled face - he has come to define an entire genre of movies. As we celebrate the story of real life cowboy’s at the Calgary Stampede it seemed only fitting to name our list of most rare and prized wines in his honour.

(…what you might not know however is how John Wayne got his nickname - something he owes to his childhood dog in fact. It was indeed his huge Airedale Terrier that was called Duke, and when a neighbour nicknamed Wayne “Little Duke” in playful reference to his size compared to his big dog, the nickname stuck (well, he did manage to drop the “Little” part later on). And so this list also pays honour to all the big dogs out there that have the good fortune of enjoying one of these extraordinary wines.)

Classic Mott’s Caesar 11This is Calgary’s most famous cocktail invention. Enjoy this classic with Grey Goose vodka, Mott’s Clamato, a green bean and wedge of lime. Perfect for city slickers who prefer a little less spice.

Red Rodeo Sangria 11A Canadian twist on a Spanish bull-ride. Savour the taste of lush red fruit with four ounces of red wine kicked up with ¾ ounce of cherry brand and topped with ginger ale and a swirl of strawberry slush.
