Isaiah was a prophet in Israel who worked closely with King Uzziah, a good king who ruled Israel well,

better than most kings in his time. But like all humans, Uzziah died and, with him, it’s possible that some

o Isaiah’s hopes or a better uture died as well.

Then Isaiah had an encounter with God—He who is bigger than anything he could ever have imagined.

God was seated on His throne. The king o Israel was dead, but God was still reigning. The angels ew

around Him but they covered their aces because they couldn’t look straight at Him. And the primary

term they called God, three times or emphasis, was “holy.”

Holy means separate and transcendent—something totally above and beyond our situation. It means

pure and set apart, something not polluted by anything ugly, evil, or imperect. This is the God

we worship.

When we approach Him, let us remember Whom we’re praying to. We are not on the same level as Him

God is much bigger than the problems we ace; He is never out o control. God is not small-minded,

immature, selsh, jealous, or irresponsible like us.

When we encounter Him, He leaves an impact on our lives that will not leave us the same. As we

continue this devotional in preparation or Ignite, remember that we worship a Holy God.

• What is your view o God? When are the times that you orget how big He is? What are those things

that oten seem bigger and more important than God to you?

At this point in his lie, Moses had spent years living in isolation. He used to be the adopted son o the

daughter o Pharaoh, but he had to run or his lie ater he killed another Egyptian in anger. God was

going to send him back to challenge Pharaoh. But to convince him, God had to show Moses who the

real power was.

Moses saw a bush on re but it wasn’t burning up. Then God spoke to him rom it. God told Moses to

take o his sandals because the place he stood on was holy ground. Taking o one’s sandals was a

sign o respect and reverence. It means God did not want Moses to approach casually and rivolously.

In the same way, i we are to encounter the holiness o God, we cannot be casual or irreverent about it.

Yes, God is our Father and in Jesus He is our riend. But He is also holy and worthy o our worship. This

is why we’re taking the time to humble ourselves beore God and say He is the most important person

to us.

Even as we prepare or Ignite, where we hope to encounter God, we must remember this is not just

an event or conerence. We must be like Moses as we prepare ourselves or a powerul time with our

holy God.

• Are there times that you become relaxed, casual, or ippant with your relationship with God? Maybe

it’s being overly amiliar with worship songs, only reading your Bible to ulll a requirement, not reading

your Bible at all, or even hiding unconessed sins. What causes this or you?

ThebookofRevelation,thelastbookoftheBible,hasbeengivensomeofthewackiestandmost

understand. It is primarily a revelation o Jesus Christ as the Son o God and ruler o the world.

In this passage, John has an encounter with Jesus. When Jesus walked on earth, He and John were

close riends. But when John saw his Friend again, he saw who Jesus really was—bright, rightening, and

powerul. This Jesus who was his Friend, now lives orever and controls lie and death!

John did the only thing he could do—he ell at on his ace at the eet o Jesus. Conronted by a HolyGod, John could only all down and worship. That’s what worship is—a position o our heart when we

see how great and holy our God is.

When we worship God, whether it’s in singing songs or the way we live our lives, we are saying, “God,

You are great. You are awesome. You are holy. And this is the only possible response I can give.” I we

lack passion in our worship, we don’t need a new style. What we need is a head-on collision with the

Holy God.

Isaiah saw the Holy God. It was an experience he could not deny. The rst thing he realized was how

sinfulanduncleanhewascomparedtoGod.RememberIsaiahwasaprophet,sohewasconsidered

pretty good compared to other people around him. But compared to our Holy God, Isaiah knew he was

as bad as everyone else.

Isaiah said, “I am ruined.” This literally meant, “I am alling apart.” Isaiah knew every good thing he had

ever done was alling to pieces and could not even reach the holiness o God.

We might think that we are good compared to other people. But compared to God, we are all terrible

sinners. Our actions might seem religious or noble, but our hearts are ull o selshness, pride, and lust.

All o our good works are worthless and o no value.

However, God did something or Isaiah. His guilt was taken away and his sin was paid or. That’s what

Jesus did or us when He died on the cross. He took away our guilt and shame and received the

consequences o our sins. Then He rose again and sent the Holy Spirit to live inside us and give us new

lie. When we put our aith in Jesus and what He did or us, the Holy Spirit gives us the strength to live

a holy lie.

In these verses, the author o Hebrews is describing a race like an Olympic event. He says that there is a

race marked out or us. This is the holy lie that God prepared or us when we believe in Jesus. Because

we are running the race, he says to throw o everything that hinders and that sin that entangles.

Sin has the tendency o entangling us and catching us in a trap. We like to think we’re in control. We

think we can stop at any point. Other people may warn us, but we eel like we can still handle it until

it’s too late. Sin will trap us while we are playing around with it. That’s why the author says to throw it

away as quickly as possible.

Instead o playing with sin, we should x our eyes on Jesus. He died so we would be set ree rom sin.

Sin doesn’t have any power over us anymore. Jesus is the Author o our aith—He started it. But Jesus

is also the perecter o our aith—He will nish it. When sin begins to entangle us, we need to look to

Discipline. This is one o the most dreaded words a student can hear along with homework, suspension

and a surprise quiz. It reminds us o penalties and punishment. Maybe we’ve experienced being

disciplined harshly or unairly and this adds to our unpleasant view o the word.

But this verse says that God disciplines us or a specic reason. He allows uncomortable and

painul circumstances in our lives so that we may share in His Holiness. This means God wants us to

experience the beauty, purity, and excellence o being like Him. God does not discipline us because o

our past mistakes alone. He uses discipline to remove unimportant things in our lives so He can replace

them with His best or us.

Maybe it’s the consequences o your actions that you’re suering. Maybe you’re in a tight nancial

situation. Maybe your amily is going through a very difcult season that has last or so long. Whatever

the case, we know that God is disciplining us or our good. Don’t take discipline lightly, but don’t get

discouraged either. When you’re going through a painul time, remember God is disciplining you to

David, the king o Israel and the man ater God’s own heart, had just committed one o the most

inamous sins in the whole Bible. He committed adultery, then had the woman’s husband killed, and

took her as his own wie. He thought he got away with it until the prophet Nathan conronted him. He

told David that his sin would have very severe consequences.

David’s response was to repent. Psalm 51 details what this repentance looked like. First, David

acknowledged that he did wrong. He made no excuses. He didn’t pass the blame to anyone else. He

knew the problem was in his own heart. Secondly, he asked God to have mercy on him and to wash

away his sins. And nally, he believed that God would restore him and x the break in their relationship

Isaiah saw the Holy God. He was given power to live a holy lie. Then God gave him a commission.

God asked, “Whom shall I send? And who will go or us?” And immediately, Isaiah’s response was to

Having an encounter with God doesn’t just produce a holy lie. He doesn’t just clean up our mess and

Timothy was a young leader in the church. Paul had trained him rom an early age and now he had a

He told Timothy to get rid o these things so that he could be prepared or noble, honorable, and
