COSTUME CHOICESBY NISHAT HOSSAIN & FAHAD MIAH

PERFORMANCE SCENES

In the performance scene we wanted our actress to look very indie and we also wanted her personality to be expressed through her clothing. From previous research we knew that indie singers tend to wear casual floral dresses to give off a girly innocent look, therefore we told our actress to wear this. The frills at the bottom of the dress really emphasize the sweet look we are aiming for. We decided that she should wear something on top of the dress, but we were unsure of what, because a plain cardigan would have made it look to laid back and something like a blazer would have made it look too formal. We finally opted for a sheer shirt with silver buttons which completed the look as it went well with the floral wear. We decided to roll the sleeves up to give it an ‘on edge’ look, and also because we wanted to show to the camera the arm jewellery that she was also wearing. Because the dress was very floral, we wanted it to be the main part of her outfit, so we told her to wear plain black tights to match with the shirt. We were unsure of what shoes we should make her wear, and we were considering converses but then decided against as this didn’t go with the dressed, indie outfit. We then thought about plain black pumps, but when she put them on it didn’t seem to go as it got lost amongst the black present. Finally we decided on tan biker boots as apparent in the photo, as these looked much better as they stood out amongst the black tights and just added that pop of colour that the outfit needed. We decided to finish up the look with a black top hat which we placed loosely on her head. This hat made her outfit look different and removed the casualness and gave her a ‘cool’ and ‘confident’ look which we were aiming for.

DREAM SCENE

in the dream scene we wanted the male actor, Gabriel to make an appearance in Shannon’s dreams. Initially we were having trouble selecting what to make him wear because we couldn’t choose whether he should look casual or smart. In the end, after much deliberation we decided to make him so casually smart. Our aim was to portray him as a laid back lad who is effortlessly good-looking. To create the ‘laid-back’ idea, we made him wear a casual dark blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up and the buttons undone with a bright t-shirt underneath. The reason why we chose a bright t-shirt is too add some colour to his outfit, and also to portray his character, as a bright, eccentric, popular boy. Initially we wanted him to wear a branded t-shirt such as ‘adidas’ but then we realised that this made him look too sporty and also scruffy so we discarded this and went for the bright t-shirt. We wanted him to look trendy so we decided to make him wear dark blue skinny jeans as they looked much more better with the shirt than loose jeans which once again made him look too casual and not at all smart. We made him wear high tops because we didn’t want him to wear converses as we were saving these for the outside shoot. The high tops also added that ‘sporty’ look into his image without it looking overboard and we kept his hair natural, wavy and long as this made him look handsome and natural rather than doing something else to it, such as spiking it.

PARK SCENE

As a group, we decided that the park scene was going to be a figment of Shannon's imagination, where she would fantasize about spending the perfect romantic date with him. Because of this we wanted their outfits to be matching and we also wanted them to be wearing clothing that they would not normally wear for e.g. jumpers, cardigans. After deliberation we decided to make them both wear black matching leather jackets which worked very well as they looked suave, united and sleek which was the image we were going for. Additionally, because of the outdoor scene, we wanted them to wear items on knitwear therefore I gave Shannon a hot pink neck scarf. We chose this colour as it is a traditional, stereotypical colour for girls and we wanted to conform to the norms of it. We have Gabriel a beanie to put over his head, but we wanted his hair to still show through it as this is what stereotypical while males are portrayed e.g. Zac Efron. We decided to make Shannon wear her glasses, as she was not singing in these scenes, therefore we wanted her to look like she was her normal self, comfortable in her own skin.

WINTER WONDERLAND SCENE

Because the winter wonderland scene was filmed at night time in the cold air we wanted the couple to look warm and cosy. Because of this we made Shannon wear a long coat that looked warm but at the same time somewhat dressy as opposed to something like a parka jacket for example. We made her wear her hair down because it softened her features and because it made her look more innocent and youthful.

We wanted to go for a similar look on the male actor therefore we made him wear a black coat that looked and was very warm. We made sure that it wasn’t buttoned fully so that we were able to get a glimpse of the clothes inside which was a tie and a white shirt which made him look formally smart.
