When Richmond Mall manager David Hill decided to run a competition to support our regions top rugby team, he didn’t expect it to literally come back to his front door. The “Signing up the Makos” competi-tion is in full swing and gives people the chance to win one of three $1000 Richmond Mall vouchers simply by

It appears there may be someone in the district deliberately spraying cats with anti-freeze, a woman last week had to have her cat put to sleep. What do you think of people who do these things?

Haeley George

It’s terrible and really sad how could anyone do that? I think we should give them a taste of their own medicine.

Suzanne Field

They should be charged, it’s a police matter and they should be held accountable.

Michael Thorburn

Its horrific, causing something to suffer like that is disgusting and its blatant cruelty. Have to be pretty sick to do that.

Dennis Hamill

If it was deliberately done I know what I’d like to do to the person responsible. They’ve got to find the person first of course.

Local brewery cleans up at awardsNelson breweries have cleaned up at the country’s top beer awards, with one brewery bringing home ten medals alone.Sprig & Fern Brewery earned a gold, six silvers and three bronze medals at the BrewNZ International Beer Awards 2011, with McCashin’s Brew-ery, Townsend Brewery and Red-wood Cellar also amongst the win-ners.Overall, Nelson brought home 16 awards out of 130 total medals from the 465 beers entered by New Zea-land and international breweries. The Sprig & Fern won more than any other New Zealand brewery. One of its owners, Dave Barret, says

it was a “pretty bloody amazing” ef-fort. “To win ten is a pretty big deal, I’m absolutely rapt.”The annual awards were held in Wel-lington.McCashin’s Brewery won a major prize at the awards, picking up Inter-national Lager Styles with its Stoke Amber beer.Dave says the haul by Nelson brewers confirms the region is a force in the national brewing scene. “When you look at the fact there were only 130 awards handed out and more than ten per cent came here, that is a big achievement.”Sprig & Fern Brewery is based on Beach Rd in Richmond.

Police are advising rural residents to be extra vigilant and secure their properties after a spate of burglaries on rural properties, especially in Wakefield and Tapawera area.Sergeant Craig Barker of Richmond police says the thieves are taking anything they can but seem in particular to be focused on scrap met-al, which is often left lying around on farming properties and may not be missed for some time. “We have even had hot water cylinders targeted, they wait until no one’s home and then go in. Scrap metal is valuable and can fetch a good price.”Craig says there are a lot of lifestyle blocks and farms in the area and owners must ensure they lock their houses, vehicles and any sheds they may have on the property.“Many people who have lifestyle blocks may

work and are not always home during the day so its really important they make sure everything’s locked and secure if they are away.“Most of these burglaries are during the day, al-though its hard to say when some of them are happening as they don’t always get reported straight away, people may not notice something is missing until they go to a shed and see its gone.”Craig advises anyone who sees a strange person, vehicle or anything unusual, not to approach them but get a description and registration if possible and report it to police.“A lot of people have phones with them if they can take a photo even better.” In the past week there have been five reported burglaries and police are seeking information from anyone who may have seen something.

Here’s the all-new compact car from Hyundai, the Elantra. The latest edition of Hyundai’s most popular model worldwide, it reflects the powerful brand’s latest Fluidic Sculpture philosophy and the newly evolved Wind Craft design.Featuring the Gamma 1.6-litre GDI engine and 6-speed automatic trans-mission developed en-tirely in-house.“This new replacement for the Elantra will most likely provide the best styling and performance in its class,” explained the Chief Operating Of-ficer of Hyundai New Zealand, Tom Rudden-klau.“It has a sportier and even more progressive image than its predeces-sor, and it will continue the successful Hyundai formula of optimum technology and powertrain to deliver class-leading performance and fuel ef-ficiency.” The i35 will sip just 6.0l/100km (Fuel consumption applies to the 1.6 GDI A/T model.)Although the new Elantra is a completely new ve-hicle, it’s the fifth generation of the model’s lineage which has racked up cumulative sales of 6 mil-lion units worldwide and high recognition from a number of world renowned car-rating agencies.“We are confident this model will once again make a great impact worldwide in addition to the domestic market,” said the President and CEO of Hyundai Motor, Steve S. Yang. The all-new, powerful and fuel efficient 4-cylinder Gamma 1.6 Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) en-gine delivers a peak output of 140ps at 6,300 RPM and maximum torque of 17.0kg•m. GDI technology doesn’t only boost power output: it also improves fuel economy.

The new Elantra’s commitment to extreme fuel efficiency continues with a six-speed automatic transmission.Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy reflects sophistication and dynamic lines into the shape of vehicles, while Wind Craft has its design motives in the flowing movement of air and the

i35 artistic sculpture.Like Hyundai’s latest models ix35 the com-pact SUV and i45 sedan, the i35’s outer design is highlighted by bold, dy-namic graphic elements such as hexagonal front grille and dramatically swept back headlamps. Alloy wheels (15-, 16- or 17-inch) complete its as-sertive stance.

The new Elantra will delight and surprise with a raft of other advanced features not found on other compacts, HID (High Intensity Discharge) head-lamps, LED combination lamps in the rear, heated rear seats, puddle lamps and a color TFT LCD in-formation display nestled in the gauge cluster.Typically Hyundai, the Elantra is strong on safety features. VSM (Vehicle Stability Management), which helps vehicles stay in a stable position, is applied for the first time in its class. Side & curtain airbags as well as active headrest are provided as basic features. High-tech safety features such as TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System), ESS (Emergency Stop Signal) are also available.

• The Wakefield Bush Restoration Society is calling everyone with ‘green fingers’ a love of native plants, and a bit of spare time, to their ‘planting bee’ this Saturday.Beryl Wilkes, Reserve Manager with Tasman District Council says, the group will meet this Saturday at Treeton Place, (behind Wakefield School) at 10am. With 800 native shrubs in-cluding flax and cabbage trees to be planted in bush, it’s a job that requires as many volunteers as they can muster.Volunteers will need to bring their own spade, wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear.

• The new zero alcohol limit for drivers came into force on Sunday, making it illegal for any drver under 20 years of age to consume al-cohol before driving. Tasman Road Policing Manager Inspector Jenni Richardson says the law change was intended to remove any doubt as to what is a safe level of alcohol. This year alone, 158 drivers in Tasman District aged between 15-19 have been charged with drink driving offences. It’s early days but so far none have been reported since the law came into ef-fect.

Members of the public are being encour-aged to attend a meeting on the issue of Amalgamation, being held at the Rich-mond Town Hall on Thursday evening. The two hour meeting which begins at 7pm will give ratepayers and members of the local community an opportunity to learn more about the issue and to ask questions of the speakers on the panel. The six speakers will include the two Mayors, two local Government Com-missioners and two other Tasman Dis-trict Council members. Each speaker will give a short presentation after which the issue will be open for debate.

Kerrie Thompson, Secretary of the Rich-mond Community Forum and organiser of tomorrow nights meeting says its im-portant people come along and find out what it’s all about.“From the Richmond Community Fo-rum point of view we need to know what people think and we want feedback to get a submission in by Thursday 19th August.”Kerrie says this is a great opportunity for people to gather information, express opinions and bring up concerns over an issue that will ultimately affect their own and community’s future.

The subject of the amalgamation has raised many issues since it was first pro-posed last year. The petition, driven by Aldo Miccio, col-lected enough signatures from Nelson and Tasman ratepayers to send the issue to the Local Government Commission. The commission, made up of three in-dependent commissioners, decided to issue a draft reorganisational scheme to merge the Nelson City and Tasman Dis-trict Councils.Submissions to the commission close on August 19. For details for the decision can be found at www.tasman.govt.nz.

It’s the business end of the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme with all company’s products set to hit the market.YES is an experiential business programme where secondary students set up a company, create real products or services, and make a real profit or loss. Eleven companies from around Nelson and Tas-man secondary schools will be taking part in the final task, promoting, showcasing and selling their product at the YES Trade Fair at the Nel-son Market, Montgomery Square on August 20.Three Garin College companies will be taking part, including Power Discs - rubber frisbees for pets and humans, made from cut up tyres.Georgia Goodman, 17, says the idea came about from previous frisbees she had made after find-ing nothing to do with leftover go-kart tyres. “We were just cutting them up so they took up less room in the rubbish bin.”The group won the oral presentations and the business card competition, so they’re confident heading in to the market, especially with BP al-ready interested in the product. Each group has to fund their product them-selves, but the Power Discs company haven’t spent one cent due to the availability of the tyres. “A set of tyres when you’re racing on them only last about a month. So we’ve got new sup-plies coming in constantly.”The rubber frisbees are much more durable than plastic ones, says Georgia, and will be sold for $6.

Since Tanya McMurtrie became a mentor last year to nine year old Ashlee, a special friendship and bond has developed between them, one that is re-warding to them both.It all began when Tanya, a successful career wom-an and Wealth manager with the ASB Bank had been looking at ways of contributing something back into the community. A friend suggested she look at Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) an organi-sation that matches young people between the ages of six and eighteen with mentors in a profes-sionally supported one -to-one relationship. The young people served by Big Brothers Big Sis-ters are some of the more vulnerable children in our communities who it’s been shown will benefit from the positive and lasting input mentor’s have on their lives. After following up on the suggestion and learn-ing more about the scheme Tanya applied to be a mentor. With the child’s safety a number one pri-ority she had to go through an interview process and background check to ensure she was suitable, followed by a short mentor training course.Making the right match between mentor and child is important and a lot of effort goes into this to ensure the right match is made. Tanya praises the length BBBS goes to getting to know the child

and the mentor to make sure it is.“When I went through the training I said I wanted a young person who was respectful, who would give anything a go, active and creative as well be-cause I am quite creative and Ashlee’s all of that.”Tanya and Ashlee were matched last year and as Tanya says, they “hit it off straight away.”With a choice of two forms of mentoring school based or community based available, Tanya opted for community based, where Ashlee comes to her home and they spend time together. “We do all sorts of things such as making cup-cakes, cooking, art and craft activities, and going out perhaps to a movie or in the summer lots of swimming.”Tanya also has supportive friends who are very happy for Ashlee to visit them with her, some-thing Ashlee enjoys.“Last week we visited Tanya’s friends house and we did flax weaving and made cupcakes. Tanya introduces me to lots of people; I now know her Mum and her sister and lots of her friend’s.”Tanya is very keen to see others consider the pro-gramme and become involved. Big Brothers Big Sisters are keen to hear from people interested in the mentoring programme or if you would like further information call 548 9059.

Singer Anna Grahame has been on tour so long she can’t im-agine life off the road. Ten weeks in to a five month nation-wide tour with Excel School of Performing Arts, the local performer is hitting the road again after a two week holiday back in Nelson.

And you could excuse her of being sick of packing, now known as a Monday routine. “It’s gone so fast already. I can’t remember not being on tour,” says Anna. “This feels like my life. I can’t imagine it finishing.”The 19 year-old former Waimea College student was chosen, along with 19 other Excel second year students, to tour from Whangarei to Invercargill, performing in schools and church-es throughout the country. The tour, which has been running for 17 years, began in Taupo and the students have nearly covered the entire North Island with Palmerston North next on the agenda. With up to an incredible 18 shows each week, Anna says her main aim is to improve on her performing. “You can’t help but get better when you’re performing that much. It’s been a challenging year, but it’s a year that will change my life. I’m learning heaps about myself and my performance.”Anna has four solo performances in the show and includes a variety of different styles, from Katy Perry covers to gospel singing.Anna was “raised in music” but it was only after a year of studying psychology at Victoria University that she decided to follow her passion and enroll at Excel in Auckland. “It was just a pipe dream when I was younger but now I’m actually doing it.”Last year Anna was a finalist in TV One’s Freshly Squeezed Talent competition which doubled as a New Year’s Eve count-down show. Anna was one of 12 finalists and got to work with Suzanne Lynch and perform live on television.Anna will be performing at Grace Church on August 24 when the Excel tour hits Nelson, after a week in Blenheim, and is also hoping to perform for some of the local schools. “The schools love us and the kids want our autographs and photos with us. They think we’re famous.”When the tour is complete Anna is hoping to start recording her own music and paving a career in the industry. “I don’t really want to be famous, but if it happens it happens. I just want to sing. I’ll see what doors open and I’ll take every op-portunity.”

Over the last couple of months of listening to people from all around the region; from the engine room of the economy which is Tasman to the service centres of Nelson and Richmond its clear there is a ground swell in favour of the proposal based on four fundamentals. One is the empowerment of the community boards so they will be able to better deliver on there com-munity’s aspirations. Secondly, for the first time council will be able to prioritise and govern the regional issues better and direct combined re-sources to the most important projects or issues facing the region such as the Lee Valley Dam

proposal and the third is the obvious proven cost savings of having a single council to the tune of at least $5 million per anum, plus there is no reason why rates will rise quite, the oppo-site or at least the status quo should remain. And lastly, the concern over the current TDC debt of $135 million and its own forecast budget in the LTCCP sky rocketing out to $270 million in eight years, time where as a combined council will have greater ability to eliminate and or pay that down quicker in what are trying financial times where debt is toxic. All of this is backed up and supported by the commissions proposal and analysis so please take time to read it and make your submission for things you would like to see further enhanced this is your once in a genera-tion opportunity to shape the governance direc-tion of your community’s for the better. Described as an ‘inspiration’ by friends, seventy six year old Margaret Plumstead has a ‘never say die’ attitude to life.Over the years Margaret has faced many challenges, but with her ‘can do’ attitude, faith and love of life she has overcome and dealt with them all.

Originally from the UK, Margaret and her husband had a sheep and beef farm near Oxford for many years. After he suffered a stroke she nursed him for four years before moving to Richmond after he passed away.“I had friends here and a brother living

in Stoke, so I decided to move, it’s a great place and I love it here.”Throwing herself into local community groups and activities it wasn’t long before she was busy working as a volunteer for Age Concern, tutoring for the local Ar-thritis Group and enjoying meeting others

who shared her love for art and craft activities.Involved with Hosting Is-raeli Families (HIT) an or-ganisation she first heard of when they visited a local church, sees Margaret play host to young Israeli visitors to New Zealand each year, something she enjoys and that led her to visit Israel a few years ago.A keen Porcelain painter, piano player, photographer and singer in her church choir are just some of the quieter things Margaret does and enjoys. Add to the list, Para Sailing, walking Fox Glacier, 14 trips in a helicopter, repairing car engines plus a love of fast cars, especially Lamborghini and you soon get the feeling there is nothing this woman

hasn’t or wouldn’t tackle. What is amazing is Margret continues to do all these things plus more despite hav-ing suffered three strokes, one of which left her with paralysis of her left side.“I don’t have time for misery. My view on life is there is no point feeling sorry for yourself and sliding downhill. You have to do as much as you can for yourself and others and fully use whatever talent you’ve got. Margaret has certainly done a lot for oth-ers and continues to do so, whether its helping neighbours who want advice on their gardens or the people who know she has an ear for ‘dodgy engines’.“One of my neighbours had his BMW parked up for a while and he knew some-thing was’nt right with it when he finally started it up. So he asked me if I could go out for a drive with him and see what I thought. Well I knew straight away the timing was out and I told him, I was right and its fine now its fixed.”Today Margaret, who exercises every morning for twenty minutes to strengthen her weak left side, still drives and visits other people who need assistance. “I visit a 96 year old ex minister who I read to and do some research for.“If you don’t learn something new every day you haven’t lived.”

The last couple of weeks have again seen a drop in both beef and lamb schedules. Beef is now sitting at just under the $4 mark per kg and lamb at about $7.50. My prediction is that as we build up to the rugby world cup beef prices should start to improve again. We are now back to weekly sales at Brightwater and numbers should start to increase as ewes with lambs at foot start com-ing through the yards. A couple of

months ago I did an article on sheep rustling. Well - sheep rustling is back. Last week some old dear from Mahana rang me to say that she

had 5 of her 7 ewes stolen last Thursday night. I asked her what colour were they. She told me they were white (that narrows it down a bit!) but these ones had tails. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that they had probably been eaten by now and them appearing at the saleyards

any time soon was unlikely to hap-pen. Keep an eye on your stock.

This Week12 WEDNESDAY 10 August 2011

When Pastor Chris Janetzki and his wife Haidee arrived in Upper Moutere they were strangers to the community and the country.Today, six months later that has changed and they are now very much ‘members of the community’ and lov-ing it.Australians, Chris and Hai-dee moved to the region from Adelaide, for Chris to take up his first role as a Pas-tor since being ordained last year.“When I was ordained I could have been sent any-where, the church decides and I was lucky to be sent here. Basically there are vacancies all around Australia and New Zea-land so there was always the chance of being sent here.”As Pastor of St Paul’s Lutheran Community Church in Upper Moutere and St John’s Church in Hope, Chris and Haidee’s time is very busy but they are enjoying it and the people they are meeting.Chris says it is about five years since there has been a Pastor at the Church due to the congrega-tion struggling a little financially and being un-able to support a Pastor, however, that situation changed resulting in his placement.“It’s a small but great community and we have found them very welcoming and accepting. We

are now running a number of programmes such as a Youth Programme which is not just for the Church kids but for everyone and we have met a number of people through that. We have also run a couple of bible study groups a week and Haidee has started a woman’s group.”Chris and Haidee both have interests and ac-tivities outside the church which they enjoy. For Chris it’s playing rugby for the Rangers Rugby Club in Upper Moutere, before moving to New Zealand he says he only ever played Aussie Rules, but he is enjoying the game and getting caught up in the excitement of the Rugby World Cup.When not involved with Church issues Haidee, works in Richmond as a Sonographer, a career she trained for while still in Australia.

The Survivors Guide is a series of weekly meet-ings being held at Grace Church in Richmond throughout August.Designed to help people handle issues that affect us all such as grief and loss, parenting, forgive-ness and life in general they are already proving popular. On Sunday the first meeting called a ‘Survivors Guide to Life’ attracted a large group indicating there were many people interested in learning coping skills and getting answers to their many questions. The weekly hour long sessions will be held each Sunday through to August 28 and are conducted by two well known and experienced counsellors,

Tony Barnett and Sandy Hitchens.Tony is an experienced counsellor with 33 years of practice, including 11 years as Hospice Chap-lin in Nelson. He works closely with people in crisis and grief. In 2001 he won the Nelsonian of the year. Sandy Hitchens is associate Children’s Pastor of Grace Church. Sandy has a diploma of counselling and has worked extensively counsel-ling teens, young women and parents. She has also worked in restorative justice and post abor-tion trauma counselling.Everyone is welcome to attend the weekly meet-ings which begin at 10am each Sunday and are held in the Headingly Centre, Headingly Lane, Richmond.

Funding ball to help Richmond kindy teacher’s volunteer work

Anna Bolitho and Rachael Watson are organising the Winter Wonderland Ball as a fun-draiser. Photo: Lydia Anderson.

Nelson ball goers will get the chance to kick up their heels in style next Saturday, and it’s all for a good cause. The Winter Wonderland ball at Founders Park is being held to support Richmond

woman Rima Monk’s on-going volunteer work in India.Rima, a Waverley Street kindergarten teacher, is volunteering for six months at St Catherine of Siena Orphanage and School in Mumbai, which provides a home and schooling for over 250 orphaned or aban-

doned children.Inspired by her charitable example, a group of Richmond kindy mums, Rachael Watson, Anna Bolitho and Annie Bell have pulled together to raise money for the orphanage.Rachael says the idea for a ball started

when the group of friends realised that, compared to Mumbai orphans, many New Zealand children “want for noth-ing.” “We can’t go over there ourselves and work, but this is something we can do,” says Rachael. “We all really admire Rima and what she does.”They decided to plan some-thing a bit different from usual low key fundraising events.“We don’t have a ball in Nel-son very often,” says Anna. “It’s a chance for people to get dressed up and have a really good night out but also be do-nating to an awesome cause.”During the ball there will be a presentation about St Cath-erine’s Orphanage, to show guests where their donations

are being channelled.Rachael says people can feel confident that all the proceeds from the ball will go di-rectly to the orphanage, where Rima will be able to oversee the distribution of funds. The ball will be held in the historic Gra-nary at Founders Park, which will be deco-rated in the ‘Winter Wonderland’ theme. The Winter Wonderland Ball will be held on 20th August, 8pm at The Granary in Founders Park. Tickets are $50 a person or $475 for a table of 10, and are available at Waimea Estates, Taylors We Love Shoes (using cash or cheque) or by emailing [email protected]

As always, we fielded a large number of phone calls and emails about the recent snowfalls in St Arnaud. We helped as much as we could with information about road conditions, accomoda-tion, food etc. We are not part of the Promotions Group, but feel obliged to help tourists and busi-ness operators as best we can. Other tourist op-erators in St Arnaud also do this. The recent huge fall of snow did catch some peo-ple out. But over all we think the public had a great time, Most choose to look after themselves as most Kiwis do with plenty of impromptu bar-beques and picnics in our snow covered play-ground.As most of the Tourist Businesses in St Arnaud run 24/7 in summer trying to keep everyone happy. We also need time off to recharge our batteries. Because of our location it’s often hard or impossible to find staff to look after our busi-nesses while we have a much deserved holiday. Most choose to take at least a week in either June or July before the snow arrives. But as always with the weather we have no idea when the snow will come. This year a few of us did get caught out. But with the feedback from our customers most of them enjoyed the snow and had a good time.

Peter and Trish Kemp, Nelson Lakes ShuttlesSt Arnaud.

Just a short note to say what a wonderful time our family had during the recent snowfalls in St Arnaud.

Initially we had a hard time finding information on where to stay and eat etc. After some time finding a contact number for the Nelson Lakes Promotion group we were frustrated by getting an answer phone. However we ended up phoning a local St Arnaud business. Although we did’nt use their service they were very helpful with the information required. We had a very enjoyable and safe time at the Rainbow Ski Field, the staff were very helpful and showed great patience teaching our children to ski. The Rainbow Cafe provide wonderful foood and coffee. Slightly more expensive than Nelson but to be expected for the location. The Rain-bow Shuttle Bus service got us up and down the mountain safely. The drivers even get out of their seats to help passengers on and off, much to the delight of our two year old who was lifted on and off by the driver. We did call into the local shop knowing from past experience the local cafe is often closed even in the height of summer. They may only have pies and help yourself coffee but they both tasted great. After all its only a shop not a cafe. Not sure why the Promotion Group think that Nelson people don’t know where St Arnaud is. It is obvi-ous they did know where St Arnaud was by the hundreds who descended there at the weekend. Perhaps it is that Nelson people have so many choices of places to visit such as Able Tasman National Park and Marlborough Sounds. That they can’t be wisiting St Arnaud every weekend. I would imagine the promotion group would need to throw their net a bit wider to attract the rest of New Zealand and overseas tourists who I’m sure would love Lake Rotoiti and what it has to offer.

Tasman’s No.1 Newspaper

Local resident Jan Cockeram was recently named the new NZ President of Children’s Athletics. For Jan the announcement was not a surprise but rather a natural ‘next step’ after already being vice president for two years and on the NZ Executive for nearly 15 years.“When you have been vice president you will normally be nominated for President so I was expecting it.”Although a voluntary position it comes with a need for commitment on Jan’s part as it’s a four year term, but that does not faze her at all and she looks forward to the challenge of her new role.“It will be a challenge and I like challenges, but it will involve a lot of time, you go to a lot of committee meetings and are expected to be very involved in everything. “As President I will have to attend all the children’s provincial competitions, one of which is the North Island Colgate Games in January next year. Then I have the South Island Colgate Games which fortunately happen to be in Nelson this year.”

A former discus and shot-put athlete, Jan has been involved in athletics for nearly forty year’s, firstly as a competitor and later in coaching and administrative roles. She has a particular interest in encouraging children to take up sports and

‘get involved’ and already spends an enormous amount of time doing just that. Jan says she is fortunate that her husband Brian is also very involved in athletics and shares her passion. Over the year’s the couple have encouraged their own children and others to take up sport and have enjoyed seeing their enjoyment and successes. When Jan and Brian moved from Southland to Richmond ten years ago they decided they would help out with athletics in the community but not affiliate themselves to any one club.“It meant we could remain neutral and

go and help clubs out as they needed it.”While Jan is not the first woman to hold the position of President, what is unique, is this is the first time someone from the Tasman region has ever held the position.

2011 is the sixth year that St Barnabas has run The Marriage Course. Over 100 couples have attended. Here is David and Helen’s story.

If we were asked to name one single event this year that enhanced, enriched and helped our relationship as husband and wife of 25 years, we would have to say that attending The Marriage Course run by St Barnabas Stoke and working through the homework together, was it.

It worked for us in many ways as we planned on a holiday to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Having 6 children we had been unable to get away for an extended period of time since our honeymoon. We missed the last night of the eight session evening programme because of our second honeymoon, but we were able to cover the last topic on our return. To my delight, I discovered that I had been speaking my wife’s love language the entire time we were away on the tropical South Pacific island of Niue. She had 100% of my time.

The benefits of attending such a course are huge, especially for people like us who are not into the group therapy type situation, where you sit around in a circle and discuss private issues, touchy, feely stuff. Attending is like going out on a date, having dessert, watching a DVD presentation, talking with your partner in a relaxed and non-threatening environment, discussing topics which may not normally be approached, dealing with issues and sorting out stuff. It not only benefits you as a couple, but also anyone else who has anything to do with you, because you have grown as a couple through your honesty with each other and become more secure and loving. This fact doesn’t escape the attention of all those around you.

At $90 per couple, the course delivers value for money. We would recommend the course to any couple, married or unmarried, at any stage of their relationship.

Garin College A fought out a closely contested game against Rival Gold in Grade 4 to come out on the right side of the ledger 29 – 24.Although Garin were always ahead, Rival came back in the fourth quarter and went goal for goal until the final stages when Garin moved up a gear to take a well deserved win.Dakota Sigley was a stand out at goal shoot, she moved well to dominate the circle and was as accurate from long range as she was on the short shot. Goal attack, Sjaan Hungerford fought illness to put in a solid perfor-mance, she combined well with Da-kota and converted some great shots.Goal defence, Tess Eden was a trojan - she read the play well to gather in several well timed intercepts and was competent as a ball carrier.

Mikayla Powick had a great defen-sive game at centre, she anticipated play well to create turnover ball while offensively she found beautiful space to feed Dakota intelligently.Garin are looking forward to com-peting as an Invitation team in the Nelson Development Tournament in the Under 17 Grade this weekend. Their main focus however, will be the South Island Secondary Schools Tournament which is to be played at Saxton Courts in two weeks.Waimea Intermediate 8A found the going tough against Nelson College 9A in their first game in Collegiate 1. Having swept all before them in Jun-ior 1 and Collegiate 2, Waimea found it a big step up to the higher grade.

Their skills have not been tested in the previous rounds, however coach Erena Russ is sure that her charges are up to the challenge.Waimea had a shaky start, as they ad-justed to the taller Nelson Girls.

However they improved as the game progressed and had the most success in the third quarter. Ellie Gaging had a top game at goal attack before moving to goal keep in the final pe-

riod. Ellie’s experience as a Nelson representative was evident as she had the confidence to put up the shot un-der pressure.Captain, Michaela Kerr had a con-sistent game at goal defence, she toiled for turnover ball and lead her team well in the 15 – 33 loss.

Waimea’s Sam Prattley loving life as a MakoSam Prattley has one major reason to enjoy the condensed ITM Cup schedule - he gets to play twice in the one week. The 21 year-old Tasman Mako loosened prop has come on leaps and bounds since his debut season in 2010 and has become a regular name in the side’s starting XV. But on the back of a wider training group selection with the Crusaders earlier in the year, it’s clear Sam’s talents lie beyond provincial level and he’s hoping to make a name for himself in the short time frame. “I’m just trying to get as much game time as possible and hopefully get the selectors eye for Super 15,” says Sam. “With the short turnaround it’s been quite tough. It’s just mentally tough trying to get up for it, I think physically everyone was alright though.”With an early taste of the Crusaders environment, the former New Zealand under-20 world champion dreams of representing his boyhood franchise. “I’ve always been a Crusaders fan so for me to be a part of that environment was actually kind of cool. All of a sudden you’re there, it’s quite amazing really. The Crusaders would be my team, but if the spots aren’t available, well I just want to play rugby.”After his debut season at ITM Cup level, Sam received a 62 day wider training squad contract with the Crusaders. The wider training team is a group of eight players who train alongside the first team squad. Once the 62 days were complete they were

released back to their clubs. The Christchurch-based players stayed on training full-time while Sam returned to play for Waimea Old Boys. Sam says he sometimes had to pinch himself training alongside All Blacks props Ben Franks, Owen Franks and Wyatt Crockett. “It’s almost testing yourself against the world’s best and it’s a bloody great environment. They’re always asking for perfection, which I think is pretty cool.”But after training alongside such superstars Sam is fully aware of the benchmark he must reach if he is to gain his first full Super 15 contract. Helping him get to the top is his PPD - a personal player development designed by the New Zealand Rugby Union. The PPD is on a spreadsheet on the computer and indicates each player’s strengths, weaknesses and all round attributes. Giving coaches a full insight in to each player’s abilities. “Everyone on the field now has to catch and pass, tackle well, the numbers have gone off your back. If the guy is working hard on his weaknesses it shows he is willing to work, so it’s good in that respect for the coaches. You got to keep revisiting it and getting better. There will always be something you need to improve on, whether it’s just fine-tuning it.” But Sam says it’s too early in the season to know if any of the five franchise coaches are watching. “At the end of the day if you’re playing rugby consistently you will get noticed. You just have to be a good fella off the field too. I just got to perform at this level and go for it from there.”Tasman play Taranaki this Friday.

Annual River Care meetings delayedThe huge workload associated with the ongoing aftermath of the December 2010 floods, awarding of a new rivers maintenance contract and a shortage of staff have led to Council’s decision to postpone the annual River Care meetings. It is planned that River Care groups will meet in October-November 2011, where this year’s programme and plans for the 2012/2013 year will be discussed. We will also provide an update on the flood repair programme and introduce our new contractor. The meetings will be advertised in the Nelson Mail, local weekly newspapers and on Council’s website www.tasman.govt.nzIf you have any queries about river care, please contact Rick Lowe at MWH, Ph. 03 546 0673.

Vegetation Control – Roadside Spraying in Rural AreasRegistration of Non-Spray AreasTasman District Council’s roading maintenance contractor is responsible for vegetation control within the road reserve. This includes the use of knock-down, residual and brushweed herbicides to remove vegetation growing in the roadway and around street furniture. The contractor is also responsible for control of pest plants and other noxious weeds such as gorse, fennel, hemlock, blackberry, broom, bracken, purple pampas grass and box thorn.Residents can request that their rural property frontage not be chemically sprayed and instead undertake the vegetation control themselves. On approval Council will mark the “no spray” area with red marker pegs.Rural residents who choose the “no spray” option must control the vegetation growth along their property frontage to ensure road users are not impeded and all roadside signs and markers are clearly visible. Vegetation height should not exceed 300mm. Any stormwater drainage ditches need to be kept clear of excess vegetation. At intersections vegetation must be kept well clear to ensure good sight lines for traffic using the intersection. If you wish to apply for your property to be added to the “no spray” list, please contact Robyn Scherer, Engineering Secretary, Tasman District Council, Ph. 03 543 8524 or e-mail [email protected]
