the public is able to ratehim based upon his perfor-manc€. lt's not as though hecan hide 500 or 3.000 milesaway. l'm a "put my face inyour face" kind of guy, so itwas the perfect job.

How do you think be-ing a lawyer prepared you

for this position?Being a lawyer was very chailenging. You

had io always be prepared, You had to be ableto express yourself. These are the two most im-portant areas in my opinion for the Mayor-to beable to accomplish something in the communityand convey my vision in a meaningful fashion toa person or a group of people to try to accomplishthe mission. In that regard it was a wonderful train-ing ground.

Tell me about your work ethic?I worked since I was 12 years of age and work

for me is fun. I wouldn't know what to do if I wasn'tworking. As a result of it being fun, it's not work. lnother words, when I come down here to City Hall,I don't consider this work; I consider it all a verypleasant experience.

I cnnsidered it a pleasant experience when I

Do you think that being married has helpedyou accomplish more in your career?

lf lwasn't married, I'd be a bum in the park inNew York City or a bum on the beach'in Venice,California. lt's only because of my wife legitimatingme that I have taken the path that I took.

How do you keep yourself performing atyour highest potential?

Drinking mart inis to excess (smil ing andlaughing)...what else is there? And if there areno mailinis? | don't take myself seriously. I iakemy work seriously. I always had to perform as alawyer. I have to perform as a Mayor but l'm ableto laugh at myself. As soon as I stop being ableto laugh at myself, that's when I realize I better closomething else.

What do you think is the key skill to beingi suecessful?' The desire to succeed and to achieve. I think

that if you don't have a goal to attain excellencethen you're not going to be good at anything.

How doyou handle sonstantly being in thepublic eye?

I get a kick out of it. For thirty-five years as alawyer, I was very insular. The government was al-ways trying to trap me into doing something wrong. As the Mayor, I'm out and about. I love the people,I love circulating with them and hearing what theyhave to say. I love laughing with them and having

ran an elevator in a bank building. While I was inHigh School, I thought it was a pleasant experi-ence when I sold Fuller Brushes. When I was incollege I worked in a Reformatory and felt that wasa meaningful experience. l've been working mywhole life. This is probably the mo$t joyous of thejobs because there's no pressure being the Mayor.lf I made a mistake on the elevator, we'd be stuck.lf I made a mistake as a lawyer, I'd never $ee myclient again. Here if I make a mistake, I put it backon the agenda and revote it.

How do you create a balance between yourwork and family life?

Unfortunately, when I was practicing law, myfamily spent many a day and night without me athome. I kidded myself thai qualitative time withthem was as important as quantitative time. Mywife did a great job raising my children.

Who are your role models? My mom and dad. My father was an attorney

in Philadelphia. When I grew up, my father wouldtake me with him and everybody would say, "HelloCounselor" when we would walk down the streetsof Philadelphia. I never knew him to do a dishonestthing in his life. Hewas a great role model. Hewasadmired and respected.

My mother was the artistic member of our fam-ily. She got her doctorate degree when she wasin her seventies, so it shows you the backgroundthat she came from.

considering a career in politics?Have a career before you go into politics. Get

yourself financially stable so you're not going to betempted to go over the wrong line. Really feel asthough you're repaying the community for allow-ing you to have had a good life before you wentinto politics.

I have to ask you about yCIur ehair, was ita gift?

It's not a chair, it's a throne" Was this a gift?Well, it was a gift, but I'm told by the City Managerthat I cannot accept it. After I'm no longer the May-or, it will go back to the World Market Center.

This was given to me when I had the Confer-ence of Mayors out here. I took them over to theWorld Market Center, as one of our redevelopmenlprojects because I'm so proud of what's happeningdown here. This wa$ on a platform csvered with ared velvet cloth. They said, "Mayor Goodman, mayyou please come up?" They took the cloth off andsaid, -'Thi$ is your throne," | $at down and seventy-five hrlayors got on their knees and bowed.
