PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: Do you want to know what First Lutheran Church & School is doing? They are having a BIG informational meeting on Sunday - October 13 from 10 to 10:45 a.m. in the church. You will be amazed by what is all going on.

We would like to start recognizing all the BAPTISM birthday's of our children. If your child has been baptized, please get us the date. Churches have different beliefs about baptism. The Lutheran Church believes it is the start of the Spirit of God working in a person of any age for the forgiveness of sin through a little water and the word of God. We want to recognize all our children's baptism dates. To us it is as important as their birthday.

AND THE WINNER IS?: On FRIDAY-November 15, we are going to determine who has the highest and second highest number of AR points in every class. We will be giving $10 & $5 Gift Certificates to the 1st & 2nd place winners respectfully in every grade. These certificates will be used in the Scholastic Book Fair that will be held at our school the following week. So get your child reading, comprehending, and earning those AR points.

BAND FIELD TRIP: The band is planning to go to the OKC Philharmonic Young People's Concert on Tuesday, October 29. Watch Starlites for upcoming information!

OCTOBER CHAPEL OFFERING: Our Chapel offerings for the month of October will be going to Lutheran World Relief. This organization will be helping victims of the flooding in Colorado, those affected by the hurricane in Mexico, continued efforts after the Moore tornado, and any other major catastrophes around the world. These offerings will only be for ONE month, so help as you can.

DAR ESSAY CONTEST: The Daughters of the American Revolution are having an essay contest for students in grades 5-8. If your child is in grades 5-8 and is interested in entering the essay contest, have them contact their teacher or the school office for essay requirements. The deadline to enter is November 25, 2013.

BAND: We're finally getting back into the swing of things! Please remember to fill out practice sheets weekly and return on the first band class of each week. Advanced Band 75 min/week, Beginning Band 60 min/week. Make sure you purchase the appropriate book, as listed on the information sheet that went home in the band folders.

Looking ahead, our Christmas concerts will be Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 1:30 and 6:30 in the St. Mary's gym. We will also play at First Lutheran, with the date to be determined. Please call or email if you have any questions!

SUBSTITUTES NEEDED: If you, or someone you know, are willing to be a substitute teacher here at FLS, please contact the school office with your contact information so that we can get you on our list!

PTL: We are busy gearing up for Family Fun Night, so in the next few weeks we are accepting new or gently used items for our prize room. Please bring donations to the school office.

LIBRARY – Mrs. Hamre: Bookfair is coming up in November. I am seeking some volunteer parents who can help with advertising, decorating, setting up/taking down, and manning the bookfair. Please let me know if you would be interested in helping out in any of those areas.

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Herard: The cooler mornings are wonderful! A quick reminder that Show and Tell is this Th/Fri and book orders are due Friday. Next week, PS will compete against the other Early Childhood classes in a Penny War. Each EC class will get a jar to fill with pennies for the week, with the winner getting a prize! Proceeds will go to the Humane Society. Thanks to Kaeson for the treasure chest prizes! Our birthday children really enjoy them. This week we are learning about dinosaurs, the letter "D", and the color green. We are making good progress with our classroom behavior skills, allowing us to spend more time on learning activities. Good job PS!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN - Mrs. Kelly: Happy Birthday Addison! We would like to welcome Carter to our PM class, it is great to have you! Donuts with Dads is tomorrow! I hope all Dads can make it. If Dad can't come, a Grandpa, Uncle, big brother, or family friend is welcome to come. I am very sorry about the date mix up last week! We will be doing a project with pumpkins on the 14th. I would like each child to bring a small pie pumpkin for this project. Show and tell is this Friday. Book orders are due to me or online by Friday. Our room Moms have made a sign-up sheet for Family Fun Night, our booth will be the Cake Walk. Please sign up to work a shift. It will be hanging outside our classroom door. This is for both classes. Our Student Council is sponsoring a penny war next week, with the proceeds going to the Humane Society. Start saving those pennies and bring them to class next week. Our Bible words this week are, Seek first the kingdom of God. Matthew 6:33. We are leaning about putting God first. We are learning the letter "D" and the number "4". Have a great week!

KINDERGARTEN - Ms. Miller: This Friday the 4th is show and tell. Happy October to everyone! We are starting "Book It"; read your heart out from Pizza Hut. Our goal is for you to read 20 childrens books to your child this month. It would be great to read a bed time story to your child every night! Please keep track and write these books down on the pumpkin sheet I gave you in your "Monday folders". Also keep track of the minutes you read to your child and the minutes your child reads to you. You can do this in the "Monday folder" or on the pumpkin sheet (we count both your reading and your child's reading minutes). We will enter this online at school for a book it contest! When you have read 20 books, send the sheet back to school and I will give your child a free Pizza Hut certificate for a personal pan pizza! Have a great week! Scholastic book orders are due by Oct. 18th (our online code is DWY6G).

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Book orders are due on Friday. We are starting the Book It program for the month of October. A parent letter and a reading chart was sent home today. When your child turns in their reading chart, they will receive a certificate for a free personal pizza from Pizza Hut. Thank you for getting your field trip forms and money turned in! This week in our class - Religion - Bible stories: Crossing the Red Sea and Manna in the wilderness. Memory - Psalms 56:3. Language Arts - We are on the last week of our review unit. We will be reading the story Farmers Market; learning more about realism and fantasy; sentences with nouns, verbs, and adjectives; and the constants v, y, z, q, and short u. We are starting a new unit in Social Studies - Where People Live. Have a great week in the Lord!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Happy October! So many things to look forward to. . . Field Trip to Pumpkin Patch on October 16 (see attached note), Pizza Hut Book It program (October through March), Fall Break (October 17 and 18), Family Fun Night (October 24), and many other surprises along the way. Each second grader will need to read 15 books each month to receive their free pizza certificate. Books read for AR will count. Our social studies project is due Friday, October 4. THIRD GRADE - Mrs. Steichen: Wow, I cannot believe it is already October. Believe it or not, this quarter is almost over; please check grades and keep on top of homework and tests so we can finish strong. This week: Memory: All the books of the Old Testament Spelling: Test on Friday over review words Math: Test on Friday and next week also. Science: Test next week Social Studies: Test next week also. The Science and Social Studies test will not be on the same day. Book Reports: Due this Friday, October 4th. Animal Projects: Due October 15th. FOURTH GRADE - Mrs. Sibley: We have started our Book-It Program by Pizza Hut. Students are to bring their calendar to school and home and back again to keep track of their pages. The daily average that I sent home was incorrect; we are going to read 400 pages for October. Remember that number includes AR time at home and at school, Reading Buddy pages. Remember also that there are $10 & $5 book fair gift cards for the top two AR readers in each class! Keep Reading! Thank you everyone for the great surprise birthday party I received on Friday. I loved that surprise and gift. Thank you again. Memory for October 9th is: 1st half of the Epistles: Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy. FIFTH GRADE - Mrs. Schatte: We do not have a regular reading or spelling test this week because we are in a review unit. We do have our first cumulative math test on Tuesday. This test covers everything we've learned so far. (There is a cumulative test after every 20 lessons.) We have a regular math test that covers lessons 16-20 on Wednesday. Religion memory work due Thursday is the books of the New Testament. We have our first social studies region quiz over the West on Friday. We will be quizzed over the Middle West on Friday, October 11. Remember...we go to my house Friday morning. Please see that your child wears comfortable clothes, especially jeans, because there are woods at my house and jeans will protect legs. An extra pair of shoes and socks would come in handy also, especially if we get more rain. There can be wet spots. I really look forward to having fun!

MIDDLE SCHOOL

MATH COUNTS: We’ll have our second MathCounts meeting on Thursday, October 3, from 3:30 to 4:15 in Mrs. Harbeson’s classroom. Food, fun, and math challenges will be provided. Please join us!

FLSCA: Mission: FLSCA is committed to the pursuit of Christ-centered excellence in athletics, daily life, and to meet the needs of our FLS student athletes and all FLS students in their personal relationship with Christ. FLS Christian Athletes will meet twice a month on Wednesday morning at 7:30 am. All 6-8th graders that are involved with a sport, are interested in sports, or any middle school student interested in Christian enrichment are invited to join in on devotions, fellowship, and donuts from 7:30 - 8:00 am in Mr. Watters room. Guest speakers will be a part of this special devotion time for the FLS students. Mrs. Harbeson: Greetings from Washington D.C.! I'll be back in class next Monday. Thank you, Mrs. Hanson and Mrs. Goll, for taking over my classes this week. Mrs. Goll has been doing 6th grade homeroom and teaching 6th grade language. Mrs. Hanson has been teaching 7th grade language and 6th grade religion. Please check out my bulletin board for assignment and test dates for the week. I have so much to be thankful for! Thank you, Mr. Watters, for planning this absolutely awesome trip! I'm also thankful that the 6th grade had a great time at Lutherhoma. Thank you to Mrs. Goll and to all the parents who drove us over, who drove us home, who stayed, and who supplied us with cookies! Our parents cooked, cleaned, and led several of the outdoor activities. As I've said before, we just couldn't do all that we do without our awesome parents! Other FLS travelers were Mrs. Hanson, the 7th grade class, and a few parents who went to OKC for the Zoo Snooze. I've heard that you all had an awesome adventure, as well. Keep the 8th graders in your prayers as we finish our trip and head back to Ponca on Saturday night. Blessings on the rest of your week!

Mrs. Hanson: It is quiet around here with the 8th Grade gone. However, we are continuing on with business as usual. I will be teaching Mrs. Harbeson's 7th Grade Language this week so if you have any questions in that area please feel free to contact me.

I am trying a new homework method. This is to say there still will be homework, however, it will be more reading. I feel the students need to absorb the information in more ways than hearing it from my lectures. They have been required to read in the past while they do their vocabulary, but I don't believe this was actually happening. So they are to read their material at home and come to class with things they didn’t quite understand. The lecture will then clear those things up and reinforce the information they understand. Just to make sure everyone is indeed doing their reading, there will be a quiz, for lack of a better term, the next day. They will be required to tell me the definition of a vocabulary word from the reading, or another fact or concept they understood from the reading.

7th Grade will have a Vocabulary/Spelling Test this THURSDAY, instead of Wednesday. They will also be receiving a small project. We will work on it some in class, but will be completed over the weekend.

Mrs. Goll: What a great time the Sixth-graders and I had at Camp Lutherhoma! Many, many thanks to the drivers and parents who helped with the chaperoning. Special thanks to Ann Jackson for leading the kitchen crew.

Our prayers are with the 8th graders in DC this week. Our prayers are also with our government officials in Washington; I’m praying that they will finally get their homework done. Meanwhile, math is progressing nicely. We’re working on converting metric units, working with equations with fractions and decimals, and always reviewing basic operations. A very important math skill is the ability to focus while pondering a convoluted problem. Most of us are doing great with that; some of us really need to work on our patience. Please remember, we offer tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30.

TACO BUENO NIGHT: Do you need an excuse NOT to have to cook? Well now you can help out the

school while NOT cooking. Next Wednesday, October 9, (and the second Wednesday of November) are set for our school to receive 10% from EVERY purchase between 5 to 8 p.m. Just make a purchase.
