Foreword

This textbook has been compiled for foreigners who are just

ginning to learn Chinese. In compiling the textbook we have

on conciseness, practicality, and popularity. The book does not requi

one to learn a lot of grammar, but rather teaches students how

use Chinese in everyday conversations. So we have tried to focus

practicality in selecting and arranging new words and the content

the text. In addition, the words, expressions, and sentences we

selected are used commonly in daily life. The syntax which appears i

the text is based on that which is used commonly in speech. At

same time, we focus on providing practical examples related to

grammar presented, rather than just outlining the rules. Our aim is

students to have simple and practical Chinese knowledge in a sh

time while learning a language that they can use in daily life. The ed-

itors have also tried to make the material as interesting as possible.

The book is divided into two volumes (A & B), and each vol

has twenty lessons. All of the texts in book A are dialogues involvin

two people. The beginning of the dialogues are all single

in the second parts are longer and more difficult than those in the

beginning. The last texts in book B are'short essays, which introduce

some knowledge about Chinese life, history, and culture. At the

time, to improve students' grasp of the language and enrich thei

knowledge about China, there are some reasonably difficu
