Rev. Jennie Ann BarringtonRev. Jennie Ann BarringtonRev. Jennie Ann BarringtonRev. Jennie Ann Barrington
Rev. Jennie, as her congregants fondly call her, graduated from Bangor Theological Seminary in 2001 and was ordained by the UU Congregation of Winchendon, Massachusetts in 2004, where she served as a part-time minister until she accepted a position as interim minister for one year in South Bend, Indiana in 2008. When she left South Bend, she accepted an interim position in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Her tenure in South Bend was so rewarding that she looked for an opportunity to return to the Midwest and
applied for the vacancy here in Fort Wayne.
One colleague of hers in South Bend told us that she had “done great things for South Bend”, ending with a successful canvass campaign in what another colleague had called a congregation that was “troubled” when she arrived. At least one of our contacts in the congregation stated that he would have loved to have her continue there as the settled minister. A district executive told us he “admired what she did there” in getting the congregation back on track toward addressing its issues and securing a settled minister.
Contacts in Fredericksburg were even more effusive about
her ministry there, where they told us she had done good work and had been a “calming, productive” influence who had “done wonders” with staff, especially the religious education program. She worked well with the Board during an extremely difficult time for the congregation.
Rev. Jennie loves the challenge of her work as an interim minister, and that repeatedly came across in our interviews with her references in South Bend and Fredericksburg. She repeatedly was given kudos for helping the Boards and volunteer leaders to examine and address larger issues that needed attention.
A Brief A Brief A Brief A Brief IntroductionIntroductionIntroductionIntroduction
The Interim Search The Interim Search The Interim Search The Interim Search ProcessProcessProcessProcess
Because it is the job of the Board of Trustees to choose an interim minister, they began the process by appointing a Task Force that represented the congregation. The Task Force consisted of John Moore, Abi Hobbs, Susan Wenger, Kira Downey, Hope Sheehan, Evan Davis, and Roger McNett. Each was chosen because of their church experience and the unique and professional skills they have to share in doing this job.
This Task Force’s job was to investigate the four names the UUA provided and come up with the most appropriate candidate for our church. They received this list the week of April 28. The Task Force reviewed the
qualifications of all four and quickly settled on two candidates who seemed highly qualified to meet our situation and needs. Then followed an intense period devoted to interviewing the candidates’ references and others who had worked with them during their most recent ministries.
The Task Force worked many, many hours reading materials sent by candidates, contacting references and other people who had worked with the candidates. Finally they put together questions that mattered to our congregation to interview the candidates via conference calls.
The Task Force met the evening of Wednesday, May 5, to interview the two finalists. After careful consideration, the Task Force decided the best one for our church at this time is Rev. Jennie Barrington. The board agreed
with their choice at a special meeting on Thursday, May 6 and, on Friday morning, May 7, President Roger McNett called her and she agreed to be our interim minister.
The interview with Rev. Jennie convinced the Task Force that she is a natural “listener” who pays attention to congregants and their feelings to identify their values and needs. Her approach is positive, friendly, and supportive. It also became clear to them that she had done her homework on UUCFW, and was eager to come and work with us as our interim minister.
The Task Force feels Rev. Barrington is a highly gifted individual and we are confident she brings to us the qualities we were seeking from the outset of our search. We look forward to beginning to work with her this coming August.

Flower Communion
Sunday, May 23
In the April issue of the nUUz,
Minister Emerita, Rev. Dr. Laurie
Proctor, wonderfully painted a
picture of hope for the
congregation. As you prepare for
the coming of an Interim Minister
in the Fall (a very important and
positive step), we want you to
enter the summer with a sure
footing for the future, a fresh
start, a new perspective.
Dr. Michael Spath will lead the
Flower Communion service on
Sunday, May 23, and give the
sermon: “The Possible
Impossible.” Dress in bright,
flowery colors. Bring a flower to
share, and plan to take a flower
home with you. Invite a friend to
come with you, too.
It’s a “don’t miss” Sunday at
the Meetinghouse on Sunday,
May 23.
Staying in town for
Memorial Day?
Bring the family to the
Meetinghouse for an
intergenerational service, to be
followed by a family picnic.
BUT WAIT! THERE’S
MORE!
Our new interim minister, Rev.
Jennie Barrington, will be joining
us! She’ll be in town to do some
house hunting, and is eager to
meet some of her new
congregational family. We think
you’ll be as delighted to meet her
as the search Task Force was to
find someone with her
exceptional qualifications and
personal qualities.
The Memorial Day picnic will
be a potluck affair. We’ll have a
signup sheet at the May 16 and
May 23 social hours to help plan
for the event. Just let us know if
you’re bringing a main course, a
dessert, or a side dish. We’ll do
the rest. We’ll provide coffee,
tea, and soft drinks for all, and
ice cream and chips for those
who aren’t watching their
waistlines. Join in!
Adult Forum
As we begin planning for next
season’s Adult Forum programs, I
would appreciate some input
from members of our
congregation.
What are your interests?
What topics would you like us
to address?
Perhaps you have a program
you would like to present. If so,
please keep in mind its potential
appeal to those outside our
congregation. We hope to
attract people from the
community as we have done this
past year.
I look forward to hearing from
you, and thanks in advance for
your participation. My email

Over the past four years, we have raised a total of $4,575 for the Wellspring Summer Day Camp program. This is an amazing amount of money and it goes to an amazingly important cause: children.
In the Youth Summer Day Camp Program youth, aged 4 to 16, are divided in five age groups and meet at five participating downtown congregations. Each age group is professionally staffed by
Page 4
Wellspring and four roving instructors on art, dance, music and yoga meet weekly with youth. Field trips are provided weekly.
The kids gather at their specific age group site from 9 AM to Noon and then all participants meet at Moody Park for lunch through the Fort Wayne Community School’s Free Lunch Program.
The Summer Day Camp had a record-setting year in 2009 as daily attendance averaged 303 kids.
The Camp begins the second Monday of June and meets for a seven week period.
This past summer a special pilot program reached out to the Burmese community involving 35 youth who resided in the Autumn Woods and Riverview apartment complexes.
In October of 2009 Wellspring’s Summer Day Camp Program was named a recipient of a 2009 Indiana Youth Investment Award from the Indiana Youth Institute. Only ten Indiana organizations -- over 200 were considered -- received recognition for exemplary youth programs.
There are no fees for Wellspring’s Summer Day Camp and free transportation is provided for approximately 60% of the kids.
Send your donations here to the office, with Wellspring in the memo line, or turn them in after Sunday services.
Thank you for what you can give – it is a very worthwhile program and your help is more than appreciated.

Be part of the fun Saturday, July 10 downtown at Parkview Field when the UUs go to a TinCaps game.
It’s the best entertainment value in Fort Wayne. The evening not only promises a baseball game with the 2009 Midwest League champs but also the amazing magic of Quick Change (of “America’s Got Talent” fame) and post-game fireworks.
If you’ve been to a TinCaps game, you know how much fun it is. If you haven’t yet, you owe it yourself to see what all the fuss is about over downtown Fort Wayne baseball (and parking is NOT NOT NOT NOT an issue). Not to mention this is the first day of the Three Rivers Festival so there’s so much fun to be had downtown.
Our wonderful seats cost just $9 a ticket. We only have 50 tickets on reserve so you’ll want to get them early, as it’s likely the game could sell out. We will need your money in advance, preferably by May 26May 26May 26May 26, so please get a check or cash to the church office for your ticket total. You will get your tickets with seats together for your family/group prior to the game.
What a fun way to celebrate summer with your fellow UUs. And get to see the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fort Wayne up on the second largest video board in minor league baseball.

Branden Thornhill Miller is authoring a study and needs at least 50 more participants. Will you take the time to help? Your voice will be heard. Here’s what the study involves:
Have you had religious or spiritual experiences, or overwhelming experiences of beauty? Are you creative or do you have a “creative personality”? Or do some of
these not apply to you, and perhaps you wonder why?
No matter what your responses to these questions your help is greatly needed with an online study being conducted through Oxford University by Branden Thornhill-Miller. The study explores potentially relevant aspects of personality and perception as well as possible gender differences.
If you leave an email address you can be sent a summary of the results, entered in a drawing for two $50 prizes, and be notified when a talk on the study is given.
Many more participants are needed to complete the study, however, so your participation would be greatly appreciated! Please go to the website theCreativeDifference.NETtheCreativeDifference.NETtheCreativeDifference.NETtheCreativeDifference.NET and consider encouraging members of your family or posting a link to your friends--of whatever religious background. A Workshop with Dr. Chris Schriner
Monday, June 7 7-9 PM
Did you know that atheists are the minority group most Americans are least willing to allow their children to marry? According to a recent study, they are “seen as a threat to the American way of life.” Even within Unitarian Universalism, theists and atheists often find it awkward to communicate about theological matters. But Rev. Chris Schriner is convinced that believers and non-believers have a lot more in common than they think.
While visiting Ft. Wayne June 7 Chris will present a workshop based upon his brand-new book, “Bridging the Great God Gap: Finding Common Ground Among Believers, Atheists, and
Agnostics.”
Here are some reasons you might want to attend:
• People you love clash about religion. You wish you could help them reconcile.
• You believe in God, and you are concerned about friends or family members who do not.
• You don’t believe in God, but some of those you care about are fervent believers.
• You wonder whether theists and atheists might have more in common than they imagine.
• You want to have candid and yet respectful conversations with people whose opinions are different from yours – opinions about religion, politics, morality, or any
other emotionally loaded subject.
Dr. Schriner is Minister Emeritus of Mission Peak Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Fremont, California. He is also the author of five books, and he also practiced group and individual psychotherapy for 25 years.
Suggested donation for this program is $5-10, depending on financial means. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Although pre-registration is not required, we would appreciate advance signups so we will know about how many to expect. Marjan Boogert will have a sign-up sheet at Sunday services.
For more information about the program, contact Chris Schriner, [email protected].
