Edwin Benard BensonObituary

Edwin Benard Ben-son, age 74, received his heavenly wings on Friday, May 15, 2020.

Benard was born May 6, 1946, to John Henry and Rebecca Benson in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He accepted Christ at an early age at Morning Star Mis-sionary Baptist Church. John Henry ensured that the Benson kids were in church. This is where Benard developed his solid foundation of hon-esty, respect, and com-passion. These core val-ues he carried with him throughout his life. He attended Anderson High School where he graduated in 1964, then immediately enlisted in the United States Army. He returned to Winston-Salem after serving hon-orably for 7 years, and later moved to Los An-geles, California, where he met and married Van-essa. From that union, he had a daughter, Regina. In 1991, he married Claire Laverne. They en-joyed a loving and fun-filled marriage for 29 years. They loved trav-eling, family gatherings,

and enjoyed spending time with their grand-children. Benard’s sec-ond love was refurbish-ing vintage cars, but he also truly enjoyed home-remodeling projects, and playing the lottery. He enjoyed a remark-able career with the Cal-ifornia Department of Corrections for 27 years in various capacities, in-cluding Correctional Of-ficer, Correctional Ser-geant, and Correctional Lieutenant, before retir-ing in 2002. He inspired and motivated through his consummate leader-ship, and was loved and highly respected by all. He was preceded in death by his parents John Henry and Rebecca Benson, one sister Mary Jordan, brothers-in-law, Robert Earl Key, Law-rence Lindsay, Charlie Jordan, Melvin Brown, and sister-in-law An-nie Benson. He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted and loving wife, Claire Laverne, a daughter, Regina, two stepsons, Lamont and Lawrence, four sisters, Margretta Key, Alice Lindsay, Roxie Burns (Carl), and Queen With-ee (Al), three broth-ers, Leroy, John, and George (Sharon), one Aunt, Naomi Thomas, 5 grandchildren, and a special life-long friend, George Fields, all whom he adored, and they loved him as well. Also to cherish his memory are a host of other rela-tives and friends who will remember his kind heart and his gentle and good nature. He will be truly missed and will be always remembered as the level-headed, caring, and fun person that he was.

Proven treatment foropioidaddiction starts here. Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) is the use of FDA-approved medications for the treatment of addiction to Fentanyl, heroin, opioid painkiller and other prescription pills. When coupled with counseling, MAT treats the whole patient and significantly reduces the rate of relapse. Medi-Cal, Medicare and many private insurance plans cover MAT. You can get MAT through a primary care doctor, licensed narcotic treatment programs, outpatient treatment programs, or licensed residential treatment facilities.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, MAT is also available through virtual care options, such as telephone, live video, audio, messaging, and other digital tools.

African Americans And Racial Violence In The Time of COVID-19

High profile acts of violence against Af-rican American men have been recorded and broadcast widely in re-cent weeks, including the death of a Minneap-olis man, George Floyd. USC experts share their expertise on how racial violence and recordings

of these episodes inter-sect with history, law and health outcomes in the midst of the COV-ID-19 pandemic. The loop of videos takes a toll on kids “My work has shown that when adolescents of color watch viral vid-eos of police racial vio-

lence online, that expo-sure is associated with increased depressive symptoms and post-trau-matic stress symptoms.” “During the coronavi-rus pandemic, students' classes and social lives are almost entirely on-line. Previously, young people had a traditional

setting where they could find in-person social sup-port if they are feeling overwhelmed by what they are seeing in digital spaces and not ready to share with members of their family. Now, young people may not have that buffer against poor men-tal health outcomes.

“We can't underestimate the importance of touch and the ability to see the physical cues that some-one is in distress. There is power in the in-per-son connections people make that we haven't yet been able to replicate in the most common digital contexts.”Brendesha Tynes is an associate professor of education and psychol-

ogy at the USC Rossier School of Education. Her recent research has examined the associa-tion between exposure to violent racial videos online and mental health in African American and Latinx adolescents.

Pursuant to California Law CALCRIM No. 3470. You have the right to defend another person if 1. You reason-ably believed that per-son is in imminent dan-ger of suffering bodily injury or is in imminent danger of being touched unlawfully, 2. You rea-sonably believed that the immediate use of force was necessary to defend against that dan-ger, AND 3. You used no more force than was rea-sonably necessary to de-fend against that danger. Keep in mind, When an officer is acting within his supposed realm of duty, this is referred to as acting under the color of title. So then the ques-tion becomes, DOES AN ORDINARY CITI-ZEN HAVE A CLAIM OF DEFENSE OF OTHERS WHENTHE PERPETRATOR IS A POLICE OFFICER. This is where my mes-sage begins. It is my opinion that no one, in-cluding those acting un-der color of title has the right to take the life of another if that person is

not posing a threat. It is legal to interfere with an altercation of an officer who is wrongfully kill-ing a man. To better understand this point let’s look at what happened in Min-nesota and what possible options could have been taken by ordinary people to prevent the death of the victim. ORDINARY PEOPLE CAN PREVENT A WRONGFUL DEATH. Many were standing around yelling, scream-ing and filming the po-licemen. I think we can agree that prong one and two ‘defense of others’ apply here. The most important question be-comes what amount of force ordinary people can use to prevent the death of another-“no more force than is neces-sary”. Now we consider some action options for ordinary people to con-sider.

How We Can Breathe Again:From Protest to Solutions

Let us be clear: we need law enforcement. That is undeniably true. Having been abducted at gunpoint and saved by a white police officer myself, I will never deny the need for police. But I also cannot deny that we have a problem that is much larger and deeper than one, two, or even a handful of incidents.

What is true is that the legitimate protest that has emerged in re-sponse to the death of George Floyd is ad-dressing the same is-sues that the legendary civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s addressed. What is also true is that in 1968 The President's National Ad-visory Commission on

Civil Disorders—known as the Kerner Commis-sion—released its re-port, condemning rac-ism as the primary cause of the surge of riots that occurred in the mid-late 1960s. Headed by then Illinois Governor Otto Kerner the 11-member commission was ap-pointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson in July 1967 to uncover the causes of urban riots and recommend solutions. It is true that the Com-mission report in 1968, which declared that "our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white—separate and unequal," called for ex-panded aid to African American communities to prevent further racial violence and polariza-tion. Unless drastic and costly remedies were undertaken at once, the report said, there would be a "continuing polar-ization of the American community and, ulti-mately, the destruction of basic democratic values." But the Com-mission report did not awaken America to the awareness that institu-tionally law enforce-ment agencies were both

the perpetrator and de-fender of the racism that would cause even eco-nomically and socially successful blacks to live in a perpetual nightmare. It is true that the elec-tion of hundreds of black mayors, county officials, state legislators, con-gresspersons and even a black president has not had a measurable impact on this issue. And it is true that the protests that are occurring right now are likely to fail to result in creating long term, sustainable change. It is true that the protests in response to the Min-nesota incident may in-fluence the disposition of the cases that will be brought against the men responsible for the death of George Floyd. But the lack of coherent strategy, the lack of dis-ciplined action, the lack of experienced organiza-tion, and the absence of long term, comprehen-sive policy initiatives all minimize the sustainable impact that will result from this formidable showing of discontent.

that we make up reasons to not support BOB… That there is a subcon-scious boycott of BOB that we proudly justify by using a double stan-dard! The discussion about supporting BOB (Black Owned businesses} is on the table! What would happen if Black African Americans made a con-scious effort to direct 10% of its annual 1.1 trillion dollar spending to Black Owned Busi-nesses? America will benefit economically

and culturally from the ripple effects caused by a 100 billion dollar stimulus directly to the Black African American Community! Consider the poten-tial if we can convince corporate America to stop its BOB Boycott… Small BOBs create lo-cal jobs and commu-nity stability. With an infusion of spending with BOB by Corporate America, Government agencies and anti-racist white people, the posi-tive change will be im-

Chauvin, who had his knee pressed into Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes, had pre-viously been charged with third-degree mur-der and second-degree manslaughter. Officers Thomas Lane and J.A. Keung, who helped restrain Floyd, and a fourth officer, Tou Thao,

who stood near the oth-ers, were not initially charged. Two autopsies on Floyd determined that he died by homicide. Minne-apolis Police chief Me-daria Arradondo fired the four officers and said they were "complicit" in Floyd's death. Floyd's family and protesters na-

tionwide have called for them to be arrested and convicted for the killing. George Floyd died while in police custody on May 25 in Minneapo-lis, Minnesota.

dressed the fundamen-tal injustices commit-ted against Black men, women and children. “The issue we face in this country is the direct result of the enslave-ment, the continued mis-treatment, the lynching and the attempts at geno-cide of Blacks,” Weber said. “This country has taught itself to hate Af-rican Americans. The death of George Floyd is a brutal illustration that we have not come to terms with that.” Weber noted that focus on injustice is actually short-lived. “There have been re-peated uprisings - each

as a result of the police brutality over the years - but that the outrage at the brutality of the tak-ing of an innocent life is soon drowned out by outrage over the destruc-tion of property,” Weber said. “Nobody condones looting or rioting. But what is often lost is that a Black man is dead, and we have not addressed how to stop that from happening. “Our job as Black law-makers is to be vigilant and persistent,” she said. In recent years, the CLBC has been force-ful in addressing these issues through legisla-tion, including AB 392,

which restricted law en-forcement’s use of dead-ly force. This year, the Caucus introduced an ambitious slate of legislation to ad-dress some of the issues that face African Ameri-cans, including reinstat-ing Affirmative Action, eliminating debilitating court fees, increasing accountability for edu-cational funds aimed at closing the achievement gap, establishing a com-mission to justify repa-rations, and affirming a right for housing for women and children in California.
