WORD PROCESSING BASIC EDITING AND FORMATTING SKILLS Microsoft Word is a Word Processing Program. A Word Processor assists a user to edit and arrange ( format ) the words, sentences and paragraphs and pages in a document. The two most important activities accomplished on a Word Processor are (1) Editing (estimated around 90% of time for a student document ) (2) Formatting (10% of time ) Editing involves all the activities closely associated with “creating and changing the text in a docunment”. Editing is one of the main and more difficult tasks in the composition of a written piece. Editing can only be successful with direct participation of the human writer. It involves a lot of word choice decisions, incorporating sentence structure ideas and keeping the general flow of writing moving towards the intended ends; or the points that the writer wishes to express. Editing is time consuming. Formatting involves all the activities which alter the position and appearance of a documents elements ( words, sentences, paragrahs ). The Format of a document is its layout and arrangement. Formatting is not such a time consuming activity, especially for a student’s essay Editing A Word Processor can assist in the Editing Process. Effective Editing requires Efficient Typing skills . A User can only acquire Typing Skills through dedicated practice – there is no other way. Editing may also involve (1) Effective Movement of the Cursor around the document to different edit points a. Use of the Mouse and Space Key b. Use of Home, End, Page Up, Page Down c. Use of Arrow keys d. Use of Enter key – to move cursor to new line
