Dear Member and Friend of Baden UMC:

What is it that you believe about God and about Jesus? About the cross? And about the empty tomb?

There are thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of people who claim the name of Christ and who strive to live beautiful lives who do not accept that Jesus rose from the dead.

What a loss that is - a loss to them - and through them - a loss to others.

Easter Day is the key to our faith and to our hope, it is central to everything that Jesus taught concerning himself and the Kingdom of God it is central to everything that the church has proclaimed since the day that Jesus ascended into heaven.

Hear again what Paul wrote:"If Christ has not been raised, then your faith is a delusion and you are still lost in your sins. It would also mean that the believers in Christ who have died are lost. Indeed, if our hope in Christ is good for this life only, then we deserve more pity than anyone else in the entire world. But the truth is that Christ has been raised from death, as the guarantee that those who sleep in death will also be raised."

Those who believe that Jesus should be followed simply because he was a great teacher - but who do not believe in the resurrection are, as Paul puts it, "to be pitied.” (1 Corinthians 15:19). Why pitied? (1) Because they do not understand the ways of God nor the nature of life and death and that which lies beyond death. (2)They are to be pitied because while they have fixed themselves upon the obvious goodness of the law of God and the obviously fine example set by Christ Jesus, they have ignored the even greater gift that God offers to us through Christ Jesus -- the gift of eternal life.

The good news about Jesus Christ is that He is Risen and He is Lord. What is more, the good news of Jesus Christ is that he invites us to die with him and to rise with him - and that by his power - the power that God bestowed upon him this thing that is impossible to us can happen - we can be reborn - and we can enter into God's eternal presence - we can be transformed - we can live - we can become new.

Contrast this good news with the recent story about the possibility that the bones of Jesus have been discovered. This was the subject of a documentary by Simcha Jacobovici, who enlisted the funding and public-relations skills of film director James Cameron (Titanic) for The Lost Tomb of Jesus, which aired on the Discovery Channel on March 4. Further, Cameron also co-wrote the introduction to Jacobovici's book, The Jesus Family Tomb, which is modestly subtitled The Discovery, the Investigation, and the Evidence That Could Change History. The evidence is not new. Since 1980, archaeologists have known about the ossuaries labeled Jesus, Mary and Joseph and found in the Talpiot tomb in a suburb of Jerusalem. What is more, the bone boxes are part of the traveling exhibit "Cradle of Christianity," currently in Fort Lauderdale. The "Cradle" exhibit uses the ossuaries to show just how common the names Jesus, Mary and Joseph were among Jews at the time of Jesus. Now Jacobovici and colleagues

Page 4: 1  · Web viewThere is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board outside of ... be singing the “Hallelujah Chorus ... knew Matt was talented on the piano, saxophone

inaccurately claim that it's statistically unlikely to find these and other purported family members' names together in one tomb. They also say DNA evidence shows that the Jesus and the Mary of these tombs were not related, which means it's likely that they were married. The ossuary marked "Jude" is said to have contained the bones of their son.

One should be suspicious of archaeological projects that are funded by publishers and movie producers and announced with sensational headlines in search of ratings in order to make money

from advertising. Real archaeologists toil away for years and submit their findings to peers for review before they call in Hollywood. Most scholars are extremely suspicious of Jacobovici's claim.

In pondering the resurrection, we Christians distinguish between resurrection and resuscitation. Jesus' rising from the dead can't simply mean that he had his mortal body back—in that case he'd have to die a second time. Jesus' raised body was an unusual kind of body—he walked through walls, for example. As stated earlier, Paul talked about the resurrected body of Christ and the resurrection as central to the faith. Finally, the early Christians insisted on the tomb's emptiness as part of their claim that resurrection is not merely a spiritual event but a physical one—as physical as the original creation.

I hope you enjoyed these ponderings! I am looking forward to Easter to proclaim, “He is Risen!” And to hear you respond, “He is Risen Indeed!”

Grace, Hope, and Joy!

Sanctuary Choir:Our choir is certain that “Punxsutawney Phil” does not like us! It seems that every time it snowed this winter, it did it on a Wednesday evening when we were to have choir rehearsal! Unfortunately for us, that meant a lot of makeup work when we finally did get back. However, things are moving along quite nicely, and our choir will be ready for all of the upcoming Holy week services, and our Easter Sunday services. We are thrilled to have Bob Muders back with us after scaring us all with his heart attack. We have told him that he is not to pick up a snow shovel again! We are also pleased to hear that Shirley Bruce is doing well from her hip surgery, and will be back singing in our tenor section very soon. Our choir will continue to sing throughout the months of April and May, and then will take a summer break until September. If you are interested in singing with us, you can contact any of our choir members for further information, or you may call Miss Linda at 724-869-4430.Attention former choir members:On Easter Sunday we will once again be singing the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah. If you would like to join us for this special benediction tradition, please contact Miss Linda so that we can have music ready for you.

Praise Ringers:We had a baby girl! Our Praise Ringers were so excited to hear the good news that Randi Gibson, one of our ringers had a baby girl, Rachel Marie! Congratulations to Randi and her husband Danny, and of course to Rachel’s big sister Danielle. We can’t wait to have you back. The Praise Ringers will be playing for the congregation on Palm Sunday. We would like to welcome back Phyllis & Matt McClure, who will be joining us on Palm Sunday. We are so very proud of our Matthew, who was one of the stars in the recent Ambridge High school production of “Joseph, and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” We always knew Matt was talented on the piano, saxophone, guitar, handbells, etc.. But, we didn’t know that he can also sing! If you missed the show, you missed a

wonderful performance. Our guest ringer for our Palm Sunday performance will be our very own talented Jeff DeSantis. Jeff also gave us a helping hand (or should I say 2 hands) on Christmas Eve when our Praise Ringers played for the 10:30 Candlelight communion worship. I would like to thank all of our ringers for their endless dedication and tireless patience with Miss Linda during rehearsals. You are all “Angels” in disguise!

Contemporary Worship:Our Contemporary worship for the month of April will be held on Saturday, April, 28th at 6:30 in the church sanctuary with “Faith +6”. Come as you are and join us in this relaxed, informal, worship setting. Our thanks to “Aldersgate” our other Praise Team, for leading our March Contemporary worship service, and for also taking their music ministry on the road to the Chippewa United Methodist church last month to lead one of their Saturday evening worship services! We are so blessed to have such talented musicians in our church family! Thank you all for sharing your love of music with our sister church at CUMC.

Cherubs & Children’s choirs:Our Children’s choir is under the direction of Mrs. Tabitha Bailey, and is open to any child in grades one through six. The choir practices on Sunday mornings during the opening time of our Sunday School program. The children sing once a month for us at the 10:30 worship service. If you would like any further info, you may contact Mrs. Bailey or Miss Linda.

Our Cherub’s choir is under the direction of Mrs. Christine Smith, and Mrs. Marcia Hespenheide. The Cherub choir is for any child in the nursery through Kindergarten programs. The little ones practice on Sunday mornings during their Sunday school time. The Cherub’s also sing once a month for us during the 10:30 worship service. If you would like more information on our Cherub choir you may contact Miss Christine or Miss Marcia on Sunday mornings prior to the beginning of our Sunday school program.

Sunday School:Our Sunday School classes are moving steadily along despite the cold, icy, snowy weather that we have had on Sunday

mornings. It is hard to believe that May is approaching, and our Sunday School sessions for the Spring Quarter will soon be over. We would like to thank everyone who has provided macaroni & cheese for the “We Care” food pantry these past two months! Your generous donations have meant a lot to the families in our program. Our “Shining Stars” for Jesus (recognition program) will continue until everyone has had the opportunity to be a “Star”! You will find all of our previous “stars” on the center bulletin board in the Chapel Café area.

Pizza Fundraiser for VBS:Howdy Partners! Are you ready for some “Wahoo” fun at “Avalanche Ranch” VBS? Easter Video on Easter Sunday:On Easter Sunday we will not be having our regular children & youth Sunday School classes. We will instead be offering an Easter Video in the Youth room for all ages. Our Adult Sunday School class will however be holding class that day beginning at 9:00am in the Church parlor.

Sunday School teachers meeting:The Sunday School teachers and assistants will hold a brief meeting on Sunday, April 1st following the 10:30 worship service in Chapel café.

“Avalanche Ranch” Planning Meeting:Anyone who is interested in helping with this year’s Vacation Bible School, “Avalanche Ranch” during the week of August 6-10th 2007 is welcome, and encouraged to join us for a planning meeting on Sunday, April 22nd from 6:00-8:00 in Chapel Café. Come and join in the fun, and help the children and youth take a wild ride through God’s word at “Avalanche Ranch”.
