Foreword

Children’s broadcasting is a particularly successful sector for the UK, and Britain’s biggest TV export market is the USA. We have an excellent track record of producing entertaining and educational television programmes for children, both animation and live action, dramatic and factual.

We are now building on this success to push the UK’s creative industries into new and exciting areas. In April 2013, the UK government launched the

High-end television and Animation tax relief scheme, looking to build upon the success of the film tax breaks we’ve offered for several years. High-end television and animation productions can now get up to 25% of their UK spend back. For investors, of course, these tax breaks are yet another part of the UK’s attractive proposition as a place to do business.

I hope this year’s Kidscreen is a valuable opportunity for you to network and build new transatlantic

business relationships. I wish you all an enjoyable, successful and productive programme.

Danny Lopez is the British Consul General in New York

It’s wonderful to see so many of the UK’s most influential and creative companies back here at this year’s Kidscreen Summit.

Foreword

The UK’s record in children’s content development, production, distribution and exploitation is second to none. This year’s UK@Kidscreen group features expertise in a wide range of TV and digital media specialisms – and of course the newly buoyant animation sector is well represented. We have a range of companies in the delegation who can either offer potential partnerships on content creation – or specialist expertise in the legal and financial issues around accessing the tax incentive.

We lead the UK delegation from different perspectives – Sarah Baynes as a media consultant and Greg Childs as the Editorial Director of The Children’s Media Conference.

At The Creative Garden, Sarah works with a wide variety of clients, from large international broadcasters to individuals from the creative world. She has experience buying, commissioning and launching new channels as well as connecting key players across the globe.

The Children’s Media Conference (CMC to its friends) gathers together every sector of the children’s media scene in the UK to discuss the creative, business and strategic issues they face, and to seek out innovative partnerships. Over 950 delegates from every corner of the UK and Ireland, and from areas as diverse as radio, film, TV, interactive media, licensing, games, publishing, live events and theatre spend three days building bridges and sharing learning.

Kidscreen has become an important annual event for British producers, writers, service companies, consultants and interactive media specialists. The UK@Kidscreen delegation is bigger than ever with over 40 companies attending. With the UK Animation Tax Incentive now firmly in place, we can truly say that Britain is “open for business”. Come and meet the Brits in our new UK@Kidscreen area in the delegate lounge – we can assure you of a warm welcome when you drop in for those vital partnership meetings. We’re thrilled to be leading the UK delegation to Kidscreen for its third year. Good luck and good fortune to everyone attending!

The Children’s Media Conference

Greg Childs worked for over 25 years at the BBC, mainly as a director, producer and executive-producer of children’s programmes. He created the first Children’s BBC websites and, as Head of Children’s Digital, developed and launched the children’s channels, CBBC and CBeebies. Greg left the BBC in 2004 and has since advised producers on digital, interactive and cross-platform strategies, and broadcasters on channel launches, digital futures and management support. He was in the launch teams for Teachers TV and the CITV Channel in the UK, and was advisor to the Al Jazeera Children’s Channel for three years. He is currently consulting

with the European Broadcasting Union on their Children’s and Youth strategy.

At the same time, as Editorial Director of the Children’s Media Conference, Greg has grown this annual event into a gathering of over 800 delegates, with 150 speakers, and spin-off events and activities year-round. He is also one of the Heads of Studies at the German Akademie Fur Kindermedien, and has recently taken on the role of Director of a new UK organisation – The Children’s Media Foundation. Greg was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2010 in recognition of his contribution to children’s rights and culture.

Tinyworld

I collaborate with a global network of creative talent and business partners to develop wide-ranging IPs which I create for animation – that include ‘Lunar Jim’ and ‘Mike the Knight’. On creation of a property, my first step is to define a strategy that will manage and steer the creative premise into a brand proposition. For each project, this means something different, depending on which launch platform is identified as best for that property.

The second phase is an open collaboration to further develop and fine-tune each aspect of a project in a way that strikes the right balance between creative needs and commercial interests.

Once a project is launched, my ongoing role varies on a case by case basis.
