1 Review: past simple

We use the past simple to talk about actions, states and events that fi nished in the past. The past form of regular verbs ends in -ed. Many common verbs have irregular pastforms that don’t end in -ed. You have to learn the past form of each irregular verb (see the table of irregular verbs on page 77).

Circle the correct words.

Dog agility is a sport where dogs must walk (1) past / up and (2) down / off ramps. They also jump

2 Prepositions of movement

3 There was/there were

We use there was with singular nouns and there were with plural nouns to say that something existed in the past.

4 Past continuous

The past continuous describes an action in progress at a particular time in the past.

5 Past simple vs past continuous

We use the past continuous for a past action that is interrupted or stopped by another action. We use the past simple for the action that interrupts or stops the fi rst action.

I was taking a shower when my friend called.
