authorial intent

• Timothy’s ‘leadership target’ for the Ephesian church was “blameless”.

• The church and its leadership has the responsibility of developing its people.– Both men and women! No person left behind– In their God-given roles, according to Biblical

standards, and without compromise

Page 5: 1 TIM Womens Dress

complementarian view

• Men and Women are EQUAL in imaging God (Gen 1:27), sinning (Rom 6:23), salvation (Gal 3:28),

giftedness and value to the Body (Tit 2:3-4; 1 Cor

12:7), worship ability (1 Cor 11:5, 11-12) and honor (Eph 5:21; 1 Tim 5:1-2).

• Men and Women are UNEQUAL in roles or authority (1 Cor 11:3, 7-9; Eph 5:22-33; Gen 2:18).

– Men are the leaders, providing direction– Women are the helpers, providing support

respectable apparel

• Do not dress/act in ways that distract from godly worship

“respectable” = modesty + self-control

Page 7: 1 TIM Womens Dress

modest

• “Shamefacedness” is a blend of humility and modesty– Cover your body, as if ashamed to show it– Use your body to glorify God not manipulate

or control men – Dress for the sake of your brother, not

causing him to stumble

Page 8: 1 TIM Womens Dress

self-controlled

• “Sobriety” is a combination of free will and grace– Exercise an entire command of the passions

and desires– Be the one who masters her desires and

passions, especially her sensual appetite– We cannot be self-controlled without the

Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23)

orthodox learning

• Do not ignore or reject good, godly instruction

“learning” = quiet + submissive

Page 11: 1 TIM Womens Dress

quiet

• “Silence” is not the same as quiet– Out of respect for the teacher, listen carefully

to what he says– Investigate each word wisely, w/o causing or

continuing disruptive, divisive arguments– Affirm the preaching of truth

Page 12: 1 TIM Womens Dress

submissive

• “Subjection” is an obedience that recognizes and respects authority, roles– Intentionally place yourself under the

leadership of the ones given that role– Follow directions beautifully not blindly– Authority to lead is delegated, ability to

follow is deliberate; choose to submit

orthodox learning

• Do not ignore or reject good, godly instruction

“learning” = not teaching men +

not exercising authority

what to do with vv.13-14?!!

• Women are easily duped, so don’t trust them with leadership

• Eve is the cause of our downfall – to be blamed

• A key example of “danger” thru ignoring functional roles

conclusions

• Embrace the gender roles that God has given you

• Respect the other gender for what they bring to the team

• Make the greatest contribution that you can at your position
