Page 31: 1 THE LIBERO Version 25 July 15, 2015 2 An interactive MS Office PowerPoint presentation developed by Dan Lawless and revised by Tom Craig, Heart of

31

1. Redesignation does not need to occur immediately after the injury and replacement, but may occur at the discretion of the coach(es).

2. Any substitute may be designated as libero for the injured libero. The injured libero may not play in the remainder of that set.

3. The player redesignated as the libero must wear a libero uniform and must remain the libero for the remainder of the game. The redesignated libero’s uniform must have a unique number (not worn by any teammate).

• The designated libero # 2 gets injured.• The player she replaced, # 12 comes back in.• The new libero jersey is # 99, no other player has.

this number and it is not on the roster.• The coach wants # 51 to be the new libero.• # 51 can go to the locker room and put on the #

99 libero jersey, return to the court, have her new number added to the roster and then enter the match.

• Because this is an injured libero replacement, # 51 can wear a libero jersey with a # different from her regular jersey #, with no penalty.

33

INJURED LIBERO CLARIFICATIONS

• If a team has only 1 libero jersey, it IS NOT legal for different players to use that same jersey with the same number from set to set.

• Again, if a team has only 1 libero jersey, and the libero gets injured, it IS NOT legal for the libero to swap jerseys with another player so she can be the new libero.

• That team would have to play without a libero unless they can get another libero jersey.

34

RULE 10.4.3.b.EXCEPTIONAL SUBSTITUTION

The libero may be used as an exceptional substitution for another injured player if no other possible substitute exists. When no longer playing as a libero, that player must wear the same uniform as the teammates and the team continues play with no libero.

LIBERO TRACKINGHELPFUL HINT

• There are usually 2 lines or positions between the 2 positions where a Libero comes in, these players are opposites.

• This could be different but it is not very often.

• This is the most common replacement procedure for a Libero to keep them in the game the most time.

THE LIBERO TRACKER

• Their first duty is to ensure that once the libero is replaced, at least one rally (live ball & dead ball) takes place before the libero replaces another player. The LT SHOULD NOT mark 2 “L’s” on the LT sheet at the same time, w/o a live ball in between.

• An individual other than the scorekeeper should be provided to track the libero replacements, this could be the timer if a 3rd person is not available.

Page 49: 1 THE LIBERO Version 25 July 15, 2015 2 An interactive MS Office PowerPoint presentation developed by Dan Lawless and revised by Tom Craig, Heart of

LIBERO TRACKER

• Their second duty is to ensure that, when leaving the court, the libero is replaced by the same player that she replaced when she entered the game.

• The same number SHOULD BE on both sides of the “L” on the libero tracker sheet.

• If not, the LT should tell the clock operator to hit the horn or notify the R2.

• Can the Libero come in for more than 2 players ?• YES, it is possible, but you don’t see it very often.

• At this point in the presentation, get out a libero tracking sheet and fill it in as each slide is presented to give you practice in libero tracking.

• How does the R2 ”MANAGE” illegal replacements ?

• By watching for them and calling them if a violation occurs.– Watch for Libero movement.– Depend on your Libero tracker.– Mark where the Libero serves.– Pause and tell the table “Double

LIBERO SERVING

• Once the Libero has served in one position that is the only position she can serve in. If she tries to serve in a 2nd position, that is an illegal server.

• She can play in any back row position but can only serve in one position in the service order.

LIBERO TRACKERS ADDED RESPONSIBILITY FOR 2013-2014

• Rule Book, Pg 58 - 59, Instructions for Libero Tracker.

• During The Match (Item e. added)

e. At the beginning of a TO, report the status (in or out of the current set) of each team’s libero to the second referee.

77

LIBERO TRACKERS ADDED RESPONSIBILITY FOR 2013-2014

• The reason for this is; if the LT tells the R2 that both libero’s are out of the set when the TO was taken and when the teams come back on the floor after the TO is over and a libero is in the set, then there has been an illegal libero replacement during the TO that could be penalized with Unnecessary Delay.

• Rule 10, Section 4, Article 4, a. and Penalites
