1. THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT
The Faculty of Economics and Management, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), is
an excellent institution offering advance studies in economics and management.
Since its inception in 1974, the Faculty has established a strong tradition of
interdisciplinary teaching, research, and innovative scholarship. From its initial strengths in agribusiness, agricultural economics, and natural resource
economics, the Faculty has broadened its disciplines to include mainstream
economics, finance, accounting and business management, in response to the
industrial needs of the nation.
The Faculty consists of three departments, namely Department of Economics,
Department of Management and Marketing, and Department of Accounting and
Finance. The Department of Economics administers the undergraduate honors
degree program Bachelor of Economics. The Department of Management and
Marketing administers the Bachelor of Business Administration program, while
the Department of Accounting and Finance administers the Bachelor of Accounting program. The Faculty has received Advance Collegiate Schools of
Business (AACSB) accreditation for its undergraduate and post graduate
programs. AACSB represents the highest international achievement for an
educational institution that awards business degrees.
The Faculty has 9 Professors, 25 Associate Professors, 75 Senior Lecturers and
lectures in various fields of economics, management, finance and accounting. The
academic staff of the Faculty has considerable experience in teaching, research,
consultancies and student supervision. The Faculty is well supported by a high
concentration of reputable staff with expertise in various fields of analytical and
applied economics, finance, accounting, business management, hospitality and tourism. The Faculty is committed achieving excellence in teaching and research
at international level. The Faculty offers a wide range of graduate courses in
Economics and Management, in collaboration with Putra Business School.
Students may choose relevant courses for their specialization.
In the field of Economics, the Faculty is widely recognized, both, for the high
quality and the breadth of its research output as shown by the achievements in
three consecutive assessments of research quality conducted by the higher
education funding bodies in Malaysia. The members of the Faculty publish
regularly in leading national and international economic journals. Our empirical
research focuses on applied economics using advance econometric methods. The objective of the faculty is to produce research that advances economic or
econometric theory and offers innovative approaches on issues of concern to
economic policy makers.
Our research interests are wide-ranging and supervision is offered in various areas of microeconomics, macroeconomics, business economics, econometrics,
tourism and hospitality. Research in microeconomics focuses on financial
economics, development economics, international economics, health economics,
labour economics, industrial economics, environmental and natural resource
economics. The econometrics group has particular interest in econometric
methodology, econometric modeling and time-series analysis. Further information on the research interests of individual faculty members are provided in the List of

2. MASTER OF SCIENCE (MSc) - PROGRAM BY RESEARCH
2.1 Introduction
The Master of Science programme is a graduate programme by research.
Candidates are required to register for several courses and conduct an independent research project. A student pursuing a Master of Science may
complete the programme in a minimum period of one and half years and a
maximum period of three years.
Applicants to our graduate programs with thesis are required to provide a brief
outline of their proposed research to ensure that the research interest matches
with the expertise of the Faculty members. Upon enrolment, each student is
assigned to an academic advisor, who will assist him/her in the planning of course
work and the selection of research supervisory committee members.
Our graduate degrees are well recognized at both national and international levels. There are four MSc program offered by Faculty of Economics and Management
namely Economics, Tourism, Hospitality and Business Economics.
2.1.1 MSc Economics
The Master of Science (Economics) program aims at training students in economic theories, quantitative methods and several areas of specialization in economics.
The program prepares students with knowledge and research capability in one of
the five areas of specialization; namely, Financial Economics, Development
Economics, Industrial Economics, International Economics, and Resource and
Environmental Economics. A research thesis is required to be submitted at the end of the program.
2.1.2 MSc Tourism / MSc Hospitality
The Master of Science (Tourism/Hospitality) programme is a graduate programme
by research. The programme aims at training students in hospitality and tourism
theories, practices, quantitative and qualitative methods that are relevant to hospitality and tourism field of study.
2.1.3 MSc Business Economics
The Master of Science (Business Economics) aims at training students in
economic theories, quantitative and qualitative methods and several areas of
specialization in business economics. The program prepares students with knowledge and research capability in one of the five areas of specialization;
namely, Finance, Accounting, Management, Marketing and Hospitality. A
research thesis is required to be submitted at the end of the program.

2.2 GENERAL INFORMATION OF THE PROGRAM 2.2.1 Admission Requirements
An applicant must possess a Bachelor’s degree with a CGPA of at least
3.00 on a 4.00 point scale from institutions recognized by UPM; or
Working experience of at least 2 years in related fields if CGPA less than 3.00; or
A working experience of at least 5 years in related fields if CGPA less than
2.50.
Pass in economics / qualitative courses at bachelor level (for MSc in Economics programme only).
English requirements (for international candidates only);
i. 550 for TOEFL; or ii. Band 6.0 for IELTS;
iii. or Level 109 for CIEP
2.2.2 Admission
Intake is twice annually and admission is open at the beginning of the First Semester (September) and Second Semester (February) of each year.
2.2.3 Program Requirements
The Master of Science Program consists of a coursework, seminar and thesis

by the students preferably in their first semester.

b) Seminar
Students are required to register for SPS5903 Seminar. This one credit
seminar course is meant for students to prepare and orally present their
research proposal, and should be taken by the second semester of their study programme. The student needs to present the research progress in
seminar/colloquium organized by the faculty and will be evaluated by
supervisor and examiners. The seminar presentation will be graded on a
Satisfactory (M)/Non-satisfactory (TM) basis.

c) Master Thesis
A Master of Science candidate is required to register for SPS5999 (Master
Research) every semester. This is a research project whereby at the end
of the study period the candidate will submit a thesis. The thesis will be examined and a viva voce will be conducted to assess the student’s
competency in the field of study. All MSc students must present and pass
the thesis examination. Thesis topics must be related to the area of
specialization and has to be approved by the Thesis Examination
Committee that will be appointed by UPM.
d) Graduation Requirements (Publication)
All students in degree programs with thesis must show proof of having
published or accepted journal articles based on research conducted during
their candidature prior to graduation as follows:

2.2.4 Tuition Fees
The Basic fees imposed by the Graduate School Office are:

If thesis needs to be resubmitted, the student is required to pay resubmission fees of MYR

Students should seek advice from their advisor/thesis supervisory committee
before registering for the course work. Research Methodology is a compulsory
course to be taken by the students preferably in their first semester.
ii. Seminar/Research Proposal
Students are required to register for SPS6903 Seminar. This one (1) credit seminar
course is meant for students to prepare and orally present their research proposal, and should be taken, at the latest, by the second semester of their study
programme. The seminar presentation will be graded on a Satisfactory (M) /Non-
satisfactory (TM) basis.
iii. Doctoral Research
A PhD candidate is required to register for SPS6999 PhD Research every semester.
This is a research project whereby at the end of the study period the candidate will submit a thesis. The thesis will be examined and a viva voce will be conducted
to assess the student’s competency in the field of study. All PhD students must present and pass the thesis examination. Thesis topics must be related to the area
of specialization and has to be approved by the Thesis Examination Committee to
be appointed by the UPM.

iv. Comprehensive Examination (CE)
PhD candidates must pass a Comprehensive Examination before starting their
research. The CE is consist of both written and oral examination and should be
taken within five (5) semesters after completion of all coursework required by the
programme. Candidates are not permitted to take the oral examination until he/she has passed the written examination. Candidates are not allowed to sit for
the examination more than twice.

This course encompasses the financial management concepts and the use of budgeting technique in business. The application of time value of money
in business operations is emphasized.
ACT5311 Corporate Accountability in Business Resource Management 3 credit
This course covers corporate accountability in the management of business resources. The application of theory, concept and development
of business resources reporting for proper enforcement of resources
management are emphasized.
ECN5011 Business Economics 3 credit
This course covers the application of economic theory and methodology to
business decision making. Demand estimation and forecasting,
production and cost, and market structure analysis are emphasized.
ECN5012 Microeconomic Theory 3 credit
The course covers the microeconomic theory at the intermediate level
using mathematical approach, encompassing theory of consumer
behaviour, theory of the firm, equilibrium of consumers, firms and
industries, perfect and imperfect competition

This course covers the methods of modern macroeconomic analysis and
