Program Overview

Phase II SBIR ($749K), Sept 2010 through Dec 2012

Develop dismount vs animal discrimination algorithms Based on biological considerations Use both Doppler (micro) and track (macro) level data

Collect clean micro-Doppler signatures of animals Movie industry trained animals available as targets Build a simple UHF radar DARPA plus-up to include X-band radar

Incorporate GFI data such as FOPEN-GXP

Incorporate wild animal track data from biology community

Radar Data Collection Experiment

You saw this at the SRC QPR I’ll focus on this month’s developments

Will make data available to FOPEN-GXP and others

Can collect additional data as needed (and funded) Additional species Additional geometries Bring-your-own sensor (BYOS) ARL interest example

- Include acoustic/seismic sensors• Precludes our use of a generator

- Wants crawling dismounts in clear and brush• Carry weapon simulants (metal pipe)• Carry weapon confusers (wooden pole)• Distinguish ridden from riderless horse

Radar Data Collection

Collect low-clutter signatures of a variety of species engaged in natural movements UHF radar, X-band radar, HD video, all synchronized

“Hollywood Animals” (HA) provides trained subjects Virtually any species is available Trained to move freely from arbitrary point A to B No human or leash in the radar scene Use their ranch as collection site

- Other sites available

Animal subjects issues Working with UNM biology Professor Eric Toolson Secured permission for animal subjects testing

Include human dismount subjects Secured permission for human subjects testing

Shooting for initial animal collection late July

Hardware Development Status

UHF radar Undergoing testing and refinement RFI issues should abate at remote ranch site

X-band radar Pre-existing radar is working Data recorder nearing completion

Common data recorder Separate recorder board for each radar in same chassis GPS receiver for time tagging Control both radars from same screen Nearing completion

Video Recording HD with GPS time Format conversion issues being resolved
