Whether they decide to found their own business start-up or work for large global companies, learning about (corporate) entrepreneurs- hip* prepares them extremely well for their future. Participants of our Entrepreneurship Schools will be introduced to tools and methods, such as Design Thinking, the Blue Ocean Strategy and Lean Management, which will help them to efficiently plan, test, optimize and implement their ideas and business models in the dynamic markets of the 21st century. They can work on real challenges provided by players in the industry or define their own problems to solve over the course of the two weeks. Entrepreneurial thinking and acting is not only an omnipresent and hot topic universities and companies talk about today. It is also a valuable skill-set and, more importantly, mindset students can fall back on regardless of their career path. Whether they decide to found their own business start-up or work for large global companies, learning about (corporate) entrepreneurs-hip* prepares them extremely well for their future.

Participants of our Entrepreneurship Schools will be introduced to tools and methods, such as Design Thinking, the Blue Ocean Strategy and Lean Management, which will help them to efficiently plan, test, optimize and implement their ideas and business models in the dynamic markets of the 21st century. Day 1

Our 2-week Summer/Winter Entrepreneurship School begins with an introduction in which we discuss the programʼs agenda, get to know our participants and discuss the challenges the student teams will be working on. Regarding the challenges we have the following 3 options:

Once the challenges have been defined, we begin with a team building session in which the students form teams. In this session, we introduce them to the model ʻThe 6 Incrediblesʼ* that allows the students to perform an analysis of their own strengths and weak-nesses and to choose a role they will adopt within their teams. As soon as the teams have been formed, we assign a challenge to each team.

The morning continues with an introduction of Design Thinking* – a 5-step method used by entrepreneurs and companies worldwide to engage in a creative process that allows you to generate customer-oriented solutions for existing problems. The steps include: 1. Empathize, 2. Define, 3. Ideate, 4. Prototype and 5. Test.

In the afternoon, the student teams get to work on steps 1 and 2 of the Design Thinking method applied to their own projects. They empathize with the customer/user and define a common problem, i.e. they discuss the problem at hand and ensure that every one on their team has the same understanding of the challenge to be solved. In addition, we give the teams input on two important topics: defining a target group and doing market research (phase 1). The day ends with two exercises which help the teams to determine their target group and to analyze the market related to their specific challenge.

Day 2

The second day continues with steps 3 and 4 of the Design Thinking method. After receiving more input from us on the topic ideation, the student teams begin to generate ideas that can serve as possible solutions to their specific challenges. The goal is to brainstorm and produce as many ideas as possible which are then reviewed and narrowed down to a single idea the team members have mutually agreed on as the solution to go forward with. Subsequently, each team begins to build a paper prototype representing its selected idea (Design Thinking step 4).

In the afternoon, it is time for the student teams to progress with phase 2 of their market research. They engage with their defined target group outside of the classroom by presenting their paper prototype to potential customers/users and gathering feedback. This represents step 5 in the Design Thinking process – the testing of the prototype, collecting feedback from potential customers and going back to work to integrate the feedback. Each team indepen-dently gets to manage its working process in the afternoon.

Day 5

On Friday, the student teams finalize their BMCs and choose a definite business model they will use for the following weekʼs pitching competition. In addition, we initiate phase 3 of the market research to be completed by everyone: analyzing their competition. We help our participants in doing so by introducing them to models, such as PESTLE and SWOT, which they subsequently get to apply to their own challenges.

In the afternoon, we hold intermediate presentations and each team receives feedback from us as well as the rest of the group. Optional: to round up the first week, everyone (including the students, professors, university staff, company representatives, if applicable, and ourselves) can get together for a barbecue to socialize and network.

Day 7

Now that the student teams have finalized their business models, visualized their specific challenges and corresponding solutions, we will work with the model ʻThe 6 Incredibles Reloadedʼ on day 7. After reviewing their personal strengths and weaknesses, each participant receives feedback from a team member and every team then revisits the role distribution for its respective project.

In the afternoon, we start preparing the teams for the pitching competition by showing them the Golden Circle* model. It serves as an effective way changing the way entrepreneurs and companies generally communicate when talking about their value proposition. With this model, we encourage our participants to engage in story-telling when giving their pitches in order to grab the attention of and ultimately convince their audience. The day ends with an exercise in which they apply the model to their own challenges.

Day 6

The second week begins with an introduction to the Visual Thinking* method, which helps our participants to envision future products, services or workflows, figure out solutions, or simply to explore fresh approaches to innovation by applying best practices from industries to their specific challenges. After letting the student teams engage in a fun exercise to understand the method, we help them to translate the learnings to their own projects.

First, all teams establish a groundwork of the current situation (their challenge), frame the context and shape the draft vision. After a lunch break, they create specific business artifacts – posters, magazine articles, movies, product prototypes (e.g. from their Design Thinking process) – whatever is necessary to formulate a clear action plan. w

Day 8

On day 8, we introduce our participants to the structure of a proper business plan by providing advice for each section including Marketing, Accounting, Organization, Finance and Investment. Familiarizing themselves with the content and structure of a business plan helps the student teams to prepare themselves for potential questions that may arise from the jury in response to their pitches.

Since one of the most important chapters of a business plan is the one on Finance, we will spend the afternoon to go more into detail here. For instance, we introduce everyone to a couple of tools they can use to do financial planning even if they do not have a background in business. In addition, we teach our participants about the Lean Management* approach. This method is used to create lean structures in start-ups or to simplify existing ones within companies. The basic idea is to go to the market early with as little financial investments as possible.

Day 9

Whether it is creating awareness about your new business start-up or informing other departments in your company about the latest project you have been working on, you will always need Marketing skills. On day 9, we therefore focus on Marketing strategies and tools both online and offline, which can help our student teams to prepare further for their pitches.

In the afternoon, we let each student team refine its Golden Circle model and give further input on how to best deliver a pitch. The day ends with a final round of rehearsals, in which all teams pitch their projects to us and the rest of the group for feedback

Day 10

It is time for the pitching competition in front of a jury made up of selected professors, members of staff, ourselves and, if applicable, company representatives. After each student teams has delivered its pitch, the jury retreats for a short discussion and evaluation. Subsequently, the winning team is announced in a ceremony and the Summer/Winter Entrepreneurship School ends with a networking event.

Day 3

In the morning of day 3, all student teams present their results from working with the Design Thinking method and receive feedback from us and the rest of the group.

After lunch, we introduce everyone to the Business Model Canvas* (BMC) and the Value Proposition Canvas (VPC). With the BMC, the participants of our school engage in an iterative process, in which they transfer their ideas – the generated solutions from the Design Thinking process – into different business models and test whether these have the potential to be implemented as sustainable projects.

The VPC then goes into more detail and helps the student teams to thoroughly explore the value they propose to their customers. This is essential to understand because they are not only developing a new product or service, they are helping their customers to solve actual problems, they are creating valuable solutions for their specific target groups.

Day 4

On day 4, the student teams revisit and refine their business models. A helpful exercise we include at this stage is to let the teams rotate from their own BMC to their neighborʼs in order to allow someone else to look at an existing business model with a fresh perspective and think it differently.

After a round of presentations and feedback (held and given by the neighboring team), we use the afternoon to introduce the group to the Blue Ocean Strategy*. This method will help the student teams to create new market segments in which they can establish their businesses and initially avoid facing tough competition. The day ends with an exercise in which they apply the Blue Ocean Strategy to their own projects.

Lean Management

Lean Management has its origin in Lean Manufacturing – a management philosophy derived mostly from the Toyota Production System, which was identified as "lean" only in the 1990s. It is a systematic method for waste minimization within a company (or manu- facturing system) without sacrificing productivi-ty. Lean also takes into account waste created through overburden and waste created through unevenness in work loads. Working from the perspective of the client who consumes a product or service, "value" is any action or process that a customer would be willing to pay for.

Lean Management makes obvious what adds value, by reducing everything else (which is not adding value). In the start-up world, it is also referred to as Lean Startup (by Eric Ries in 2008) – a methodology for developing businesses and products, which aims to shorten product development cycles by adopting a combination of business-hypothesis-driven experimentation, iterative product releases, and validated learning. The central hypothesis of the lean startup methodology is that if startup companies invest their time into iteratively building products or services to meet the needs of early customers, they can reduce the market risks and sidestep the need for large amounts of initial project funding and expensive product launches and failures.

Design Thinking

Prof. David Kelley at the Stanford University has developed a method called “Design Thinking“, which is based on the cognitive working process of designers. When designers develop ideas and solutions they progress step by step: they empathize, define, ideate, create prototypes and test these. This is exactly the process our participants will go through in this workshop. To get started, they develop a common problem to address. In order to immediately sort out undesirable developments which fail to meet market demand, they will integrate the wishes and needs of their target groups early on in the process.

The Design Thinking method can easily be applied to any type of question or problem and therefore provides a great learning effect for all participants. In everyday work life, Design Thinking has the potential to create a lively innovation culture – particularly when holistic, customer-oriented and creative solutions are demanded.

Visual Thinking

Visual Thinking is a method that helps teams to solve problems through a visual collaboration process. It was developed by thought-leader and award-winning innovator Tom Wujec from extensive experience working in creative industries. This unique approach combines visuali-zation with rapid prototyping to enhance collaboration within teams.

We help our participants during this process to envision future products, services or workflows, figure out solutions, or simply to explore fresh approaches to innovation by applying best practices from industries outside their own. When applying the Visual Thinking method, teams are surrounded by panoramic visualizations, wall drawings, sketches and illustrations that depict e.g. their business landscape, vision, strategy, process and ultimately, their action plans. Each one of our participants becomes an active prototyper, designing, building, even acting out past, present and future scenarios. The combination of making their ideas visible, tangible and persistent has a profound effect, unleashing previously locked up creative energy into breakthrough solutions.

Module descriptions

Corporate Entrepreneurship (also: Intrapreneurship)

We offer our Summer/Winter Entrepreneurship Schools also as Intrapreneurship Schools, in which the content is quite similar. Adapting to changes in the business world is not only valid for entrepreneurs but also for intra-preneurs — individuals who work within established organizations but think and act like entrepreneurs. Especially in large companies, work processes can be complex, routines have manifested themselves and changes need approval from different units and upper management. Having a designated intrapreneur or team of intrapreneurs inside a company to deal with the task of developing new products or services and staying on top of market trends can ensure long-term competitive advantages.

Our Intrapreneurship Schools are thus designed to help analyze, understand, develop and manage the process of developing new ideas, products and services within companies. Besides learning how to use the Business Model Canvas and apply the Lean Management approach, our participants will e.g. be introduced to techniques, such as pitching, which prepare them to present new concepts to senior management. The goal of this school is to help our participants to think and act like an entrepreneur within established organizations, to learn how to turn one idea into various business models and create lean structures to effectively realize projects and adapt to markets flexibly.

Blue Ocean Strategy

The Blue Ocean Strategy is a method which enables you to systematically differentiate yourself from your competitors by analyzing your companyʼs strengths and opportunities given its unique selling propositions. The method includes four parts: to eliminate, reduce, improve and create. These help our participants to compare themselves with their competitors, recognize patterns and discover the things that are important to their customers.

Golden Circle

The Golden Circle is a model which can help entrepre-neurs and business professionals to communicate more effectively – whether this involves a Marketing message from a company to its customers, a business idea a founder wants to pitch to investors or a personal decision they are sharing with their friends. By changing the order of the information provided and focusing on the WHY, anyone can not only give more meaning to a message but also convince their audience because people don t̓ respond to what you do but WHY you do it. Therefore, we encourage our participants to zone in on their teamʻs WHY. Second, they learn how to set themselves apart from their competition by mentioning HOW their solution to the challenge at hand is special – they define their product̒ s or serviceʻs unique selling propositions (USPs). By figuring out their WHY and HOW and integrating that into their final presentation, our participants will be able to deliver an amazing pitch and apply this pitching technique even after the workshop has ended.

The 6 Incredibles

The “6 Incredibles“ is a proven model used by global companies as a team building activity. We use it in our workshops/summer/winter schools for the same reason: for our participants to build teams, which can then work together on a specific challenge or problem. First, we encourage them to let go of the traditional positions they know (or have heard of) when thinking about the structure of a company. Second, we introduce them to “6 Incredibles“, which represent more loosely defined roles that are easier to identify with. These are the following: the Leader, the Creative Mind, the Wo/man of Action, the Organizer, the Enthusiast and the Helper. After analyzing the roles, evaluating themselves and identifying with at least two of the six roles, we let our participants engage in the process of forming teams. The overall goal is to form a team in which every one of “6 Incredibles“ is represented. More importantly, however, we ensure that everyone feels 100% comfortable with the roles they have chosen.

Business Model Canvas

Before you use up months in order to do research and draft the perfect business plan, you can quickly and easily verify whether your business idea has the potential to be realized into an actual venture by using the Business Model Canvas (BMC). With the BMC, you can identify the unique selling propositions of your offer, define your key target group and decide how your business should be structured within hours. The BMC is composed of nine key blocks of a business plan and allows you to quickly (re-)design your business model. Since todayʼs lucrative products and services can all too soon become a thing of the past, the BMC is also a useful tool for intrapreneurs (or corporate entrepreneurs) to create offers of tomorrow and thereby actively shape the future of their companies.

In order to act wisely and make effective decisions in our markets today, entrepre-neurs have to be able to react quickly and flexibly to adapt to e.g. societal and technological trends. By engaging with the BMC, our participants have at least one model to fall back on that is ideal to flexibly test different ideas and look at a business model from various angles. They can thereby create a number of different business models from only one single idea.

Janina Freigang, M.Sc. has lived, studied and worked in seven different countries, obtained her B.A. in International Relations Global Business in Los Angeles and Bilbao and subsequently completed her M.Sc. in European Business in London and Berlin. In 2012, Janina founded her first company (FREIGANG APPLICATIONS CONSULTING). Andreas Voss, M.A. obtained his B.A. in Business Administration and M.A. in Entrepreneurship in Hamburg.
