PASTOR’S CORNER Need for Conversion on Racism; Need for Order
I have never been stopped by a police officer for taking a walk. I have African American friends who have had that experience and who live in fear of being arrested for walking.
For several years, we in the Archdiocese of New Orleans have prayed a Family Prayer during Mass for an end to violence, murder and racism. We pray the prayer because those realities – violence, murder and racism – remain an unfortunate part of our lives.
This past week, we witnessed an instance of racism that set off a firestorm of protest and violence in our country. A black man, George Floyd, was senselessly and brutally killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis – on camera. The incident tapped deeply into the sense of disenfranchisement and distrust felt by people of color.
Outraged by what occurred, people of various ethnic groups took to the streets to protest what happened and to call for justice – rights our Constitution enshrines. Unfortunately, extremists used the occasion to engage in acts of violence, looting and destruction which are abhorrent, cannot be condoned and must be stopped.
We need to continue to pray the Family Prayer to end violence and racism. The call to love like Jesus requires us to confront racism and complacency about racism and to beg God for ways to address the issue and the systemic causes that underlie it.
A photographer named Marco Mancinelli was taking pictures for a story on a Montessori School. After he prayed to God to see something great to photograph, he noticed a little girl lay her head on the lap of a little boy. The girl and boy were colorblind to their racial differences. Mancinelli calls the photo (below) “Age of Innocence.” May God grant us the grace to advance the cause of racial justice, harmony and order in our time.
God bless, Fr. Joe
SUNDAY, JUNE 7, 2020 Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
“God so loved the world that He gave His only Son” John 3:16-18
We have all wrestled with the question: What is God really like? If you are confused, it is a perfectly normal reaction. It is impossible to fathom our infi-nite God. Jesus knew he could not give his disciples a full explanation of God. Instead, He spoke of His relationship with the Father and assured them that the Holy Spirit would guide them “into all truth.” God is revealed in John as “love” - a unity of three persons in relationship. In very early Christianity, the origin of the use of the word “person” to refer to God came from ancient theatre where one actor wore several masks for the different persons he played. Similarly, God can be said to be one and yet three persons. That we are made in his image means that we are rational, relational and loving. Today’s Feast reminds us that we were created as relational beings, not loners. We are children of the Father, and therefore, brothers and sisters to one an-other, interrelated with God and our families, friends, church community and world. Trinity Sunday is a day to thank God for the won-derful people in our life. We need to see the love, the goodness, the generosity and the compassion of the Trinity in them. As we grow in the experience of God’s love for us through the people in our life, we are called to love and care for others. God intends Trinitarian love to flow from God to us, but also to flow out from us to all whose lives we touch. Let us not fail to acknowl-edge the many blessings and graces that the Triune God makes present to us each day as part of the di-vine desire to fill us with divine life and draw us into the unity with the three and the one. “O Blessed Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, make us aware of your many blessings and graces, especially those we receive through the love of oth-ers, so that we may bring your love, grace and bless-ings into our world. Amen.”

Thank you for your generosity during the increased Covid need.
Video Masses Continue Our priests remain committed to videotaping daily mass and Sunday mass for the benefit of all who cannot attend mass due to illness, compromised health or concerns about the virus.
Hurricane Season Prayer The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1–November 30. The following prayer is recommended for daily recita-tion during that time: “Our Father in Heaven, through the intercession of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, spare us from all storms, loss of life and storm damage during this Hurricane season. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.”
Entering Phase 2 Reopening On June 1, Governor Edwards announced that our State will enter Phase 2 of the Covid reopening on Friday, June 5. The Governor said that businesses and churches may expand from 25% to 50% occupancy, but here is the kicker: 6-foot social distancing still must be observed. At the time this bulletin was sent to the printer, we were still mulling over what changes this might allow in our seating configuration for Mass. Praise God for this latest loosening of restrictions in our State.
Prayer to End Violence, Murder and Racism
In light of the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis and both the peaceful protests and violent acts/riots across our nation, I invite everyone to pray on a regular basis the Archdiocesan Prayer to End Violence, Murder and Racism. The prayer is reprinted below.
Our Family Prayer
Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our Archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Thank You for your continuing financial support of our Church through envelope usage and Faith Direct.
4 ST. FRANCIS XAVIER VOL. 72 NO 23
When we cannot receive Jesus in Holy Communion, we can still make an Act of “Spiritual Communion,” in which we express our faith in Jesus and in His Presence in the Eucha-rist, and we ask to unite ourselves to Him. The Lord grants graces and strength through this action. Here is a revered spiritual communion prayer of St. Alphonsus Liguori:
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I de-sire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now re-ceive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be sepa-rated from You. Amen.
PRAYER FOR PROTECTION AND HEALING FROM CORONAVIRUS
Lord Jesus, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick got well. Come to our aid in the midst of the global spread of coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love.
Heal those who are sick with the virus; may they regain their strength and health. Heal us from fear, which prevents na-tions and neighbors from helping one another. Heal us from pride, which makes us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.
Stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow. Bring those who have died from the virus to eternal peace. Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair, and give them peace.
Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and medical profes-sionals who seek to help those affected and put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection.
Be with leaders of nations. Give them wisdom to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they serve; guide them to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks.
Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, be with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of anxiety, give us peace.
We pray this in your most holy name, Jesus, for You are our loving and healing Lord. Amen.
Our Lady of Prompt Succor, St. Joseph, St. Francis Xavier, St. Roch and St. Rosalie, pray for us!
Phase 1 Guidelines in Brief (While researching Phase II possibilities)
+Governor’s Directive. The Phase 1 directive allows us to have 141 people in Church per mass. Once that capacity is reached, we can’t allow any more people at mass. We hope to enlarge that number with the move to Phase 2 reopening. +Dispensation Continues. The Dispensation from attending Sunday Mass remains in effect. If you go to Weekday Mass, that also fulfills the Sunday obligation. +Videotaping of Masses Continues. The videotaping of weekday/weekend masses continues. +No More Signing Up for Mass; No Limit to Attending Mass. There is no more requirement to sign up for Mass. Once the seating capacity is reached, people must come back for another Mass. There is no limit of attending one Mass per week. You can go to Mass as often as you like. +Entry through Side Doors of Church Only; Seating at Mass. Please use the side doors to enter church. For weekday mass, choose a pew and stay 6 feet away from everybody else. For weekend Mass, ushers will direct you to a pew that fits your group. +Social Distancing Requirements at Mass: Please stay 6 feet apart from others in Church and in the Communion line unless you are with a group; sanitize your hands immediately before Communion; receive Communion in the hand – open your hand flat and let the minister ‘drop’ the host into your hand; no physical contact at the sign of peace unless you are with a group; please don’t hang out in church before or after Mass; you MUST wear a facial covering to attend the 4 pm Mass on Saturday, the 8 am Mass on Sunday and the 6:30 am Mass on Tuesday – for all other masses, facial coverings are encouraged strongly but not required. +The Mass Schedule is as Usual on weekdays and weekends. +Thanks for your patience and cooperation.
