What’s the ROI about?


Rotarians & friends making blindness history for people in

developing countries, by helping to eradicate

unnecessary world blindness by 2020

It’s about


ROI provides low cost ophthalmoscopes to screen for early signs of detectable eye

& other life threatening conditions

It uses The Rotary Foundation (TRF) matching grants to fund eye-care treatments


75% of impending blindness is preventable

or curable

The scale of the challenge


We live in a world where

... and yet 75% ... yes 75%

can be prevented, or cured

The vision of 314m people is impaired 37 million people are currently blind Up to 2 million could go blind next year Some 80% of blind people are over 50 A child goes blind every minute A person goes blind every 5 seconds


We live in a world that

Without early diagnosis and treatment, by 2020 the

world’sblind population will grow

To at least 75 million individuals

Cataract is the leading cause of blindness

The clouding of the lens is responsible for 47% of world blindness … that’s nearly 20

million people

Early diagnosis and a 20 minute operation, costing as little as £10 (US $20) will change,

potentially save a life, & helpmake blindness history

for that person

What is an ophthalmoscope?

It is a non invasive tool used to examine the retina

It helps identify serious medical conditions, as well as

eye disorders

The Optyse™ is deployed in 44 countries

Over 550 cataract operations have already been performed, mainly using volunteer consultants

You have purchased eye equipment for a Rotary Medical Centre in Mumbai

(As at Spring 2008)

… The 1st two projects raised some $45,000 from sponsoring Club donations of just $2,865

4. That’s it. We willl find host Rotary Clubs to manage projects, arrange distribution & treatments with our partners … and keep you informed of progress and achievements
