IPFIX Protocol Latest News

• SCTP MUST be implemented by all compliant implementations. UDP and TCP is a MAY.

• SCTP SHOULD be used in deployments where exporters and collectors are communicating over links which are susceptible to congestion.

• TCP MAY be used in deployments where exporters and collectors communicate over links which are susceptible to congestion, but SCTP is preferred, due to its ability to limit back pressure on exporters (especially when using PR-SCTP) and its message vs. stream orientation.

• Other non-congestion aware protocols (like UDP) MAY be used in deployments where exporters and collectors always communicate over dedicated links which are not susceptible to congestion.

• Proposal for PSAMP: simply use the IPFIX transport protocol(s)• Proposal for PSAMP: collector-based rate configuration not mentioned

IPFIX Protocol Latest News

• New IETF and vendor Specific (option) templates• Proposal for Time Synchronization

Microsecond is a MUST for IPFIX (SHOULD for PSAMP)But also second, millisecond and nanosecond proposals

• Encoding of Information Model data typesNo new data types are needed for PSAMP

• Start of an IANA section Proposal: the PSAMP IANA section will refer to it

• New security sectionPSAMP and IPFIX have the same security requirementsProposal: the PSAMP security section will refer to it

• Start of an Metering Statistics section• Listing of the open issues

What’s new in version 01?

• Not much: we’ve all been busy with the IPFIX protocol draft!!

• Rewritten section 2 "Introduction“• Rewritten section 4 "Differences between

PSAMP and IPFIX“• Editorial changes • List of open issues

To Be Done

• Cut and Paste the terminology section from [IPFIX-PROTO]

• Sampling and Filtering examples: Must clearly define the sampling examplesMust have a filtering exampleDouble check the examples with the information

model elements. Example: Selector ID, packet-sample, sampling-algorithm, hash-value, etc…

• Describe the packet fragment encoding with the variable length data type

• IANA considerations and time synchronization references to IPFIX

To Be Done

• A new section about the terminology comparison between [PSAMP-PROTO] (hence [IPFIX-PROTO]) and [PSAMP-FRAMEWORK]

- Flow Data Records sent in Data FlowSet = packet report in [PSAMP-FRAMEWORK]

- Options Data Record sent in Data FlowSet = packet interpretation in [PSAMP-FRAMEWORK]

- Exporting Process in IPFIX = Reporting Process in [PSAMP-FRAMEWORK]

• Extend security considerations by a discussion on exported Payload

• Any others?

Open Issue

• Do we want to distinguish an IPFIX Flow Record export with one packet from a PSAMP export?

• Sequential order of sampling/filtering. How to report the order to the collector?

• Any others?
