Cattlemen,Greetings from our families at Dakota Xpress. Dakota Xpress is the com-

bined seedstock operations of Hansen Simmental Ranch and Mandan Lake Simmental Ranch, which are both family operations that are very devoted to the cattle industry.

2017…wow, what a challenging year! Spring fencing made the top 2 as the worst we have seen here for mending fences. Calving season went smooth-ly as far as the weather cooperating but developed into a disappointing late spring and summer with minimal to no rain fall. This certainly challenged the ranching industry to be creative on our stocking rates and feeding rations, that contained weeds, straw and other feed sources to balance a ration for winter feeding.

Our cow herds were no exception to these conditions and that is why it is very important to raise performance cattle with fleshing ability, take care of re-production and raise a calf, with both purebred and commercial cow operations having the same goals of raising cattle and being profitable.

We at Dakota Xpress will continue to produce high performing cattle that have built in longevity to ensure that you receive full value of your purchases whether it be bulls or heifers. Our EPD profile on the bulls selling is genetically packed with growth and maternal traits. This year more operations were forced to sell at weaning which shows how important heavy weaning weights are to produce more dollars. Along with that, our cows are expected to calve without assistance, have calf vigor and top udder quality to minimize labor.

The vaccination program on the cattle is the same between ranches, be-ginning the end of May at branding time they are vaccinated with Vista Once and 7 way with Somnus. The fall pre-weaning vaccination is 2 weeks prior to weaning and booster shots at weaning. Calves were weaned the first week in October. They were poured with Dectomax and drenched with Valbazen. The bred heifers were ultrasounded for pregnancy with calving dates and sex of calf if able to determine by age of calf. The bred heifers have been vaccinated with Virashield 6VL5 HB and ScourBos as well as poured with Dectomax.

The bulls are developed on a home grown TMR ration with a total balanced mineral ration. The ration consists of chopped hay, corn silage, corn distillers, grain corn and fed to a level to gain 3.5 lbs. per head per day for the feeding period of weaning until sale day. We have found this ration to grow the bulls and build in longevity for the bulls mature life. It is important to us that the bulls maintain body condition to perform to their best potential at breeding time and then into maturity.

The bulls have been DNA tested for coat color (red ,black, or non dilutor) and also some were chosen for homozygous polled testing. The bulls select-ed for the sale are both purebred and Simm-Angus with several bulls in sire groups. In the situation that you need to purchase more than one bull, by using these sire groups, you have the choice to purchase half brothers to bred unifor-mity to your cattle herds. Meaning less discounted calves come market time.

The cattle can be viewed at the Hansen and Staigle ranches prior to the week of the sale. The cattle will be trucked to Kist Livestock on Feb 13th and will be available for viewing until sale day, February 16th. Our cattle are videoed and can be viewed online at www.dvauction.com. The sale will be broadcasted on the internet at www.dvauction.com. The proper care, feeding and management of a young sire will insure that you will be happy with the return on invest-ment. By managing yearling bulls properly, your investment will return dividends for many years down the road. Dakota Xpress takes pride in the development of our bulls. Our bulls are feed a high roughage ration consisting of corn silage, chopped hay, corn, corn distillers, and a mineral and vitamin package. The TMR bull ration is fed to develop frame, mus-cle, and scrotal development without fattening the bulls. This ration has worked well to alleviate problems with fertility, feet and leg problems, and to ensure the longevity of the bulls.

At Dakota XPress the fertility of the herd bull is even more important than its growth performance. So in addition to protein and energy, we make sure that the rations contain an adequate trace mineral package. Therefore the mineral package contains chelated zinc, copper, manganese, and organic selenium to enhance reproductive performance. The cow herd also receives a mineral package to enhance their reproductive performance as well.

Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus coWS with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units ARe in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a $50 bull if both ARe exposed to 30 coWS over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
