The Past and Present
• In the past…– There were many
trees in the forest.– There was a little
creek behind our house.

Budi is taller than Ali.

interesting more interesting

n, p, s and t double the final consonant
big bigger
thin thinner

Superlatives
• When you compare more than two objects, you use superlatives to say that one has super quality, better than the rest. e.g. Ali is 1.6 m tall.
Budi is 1.72 m tall
Leo is 1.8 m tall.Leo is the tallest among the three boys.
• For two syllable or more, use “the most”• Leo is the most handsome boy in the class.
7
Expressing big/small difference
• Comparative adjectives or adverbs are modified by much, a lot, a little, a little bit, or farX He is very older than I am. He is much older than I am.
Anna drives far more carefully than her husband.
This pen is a little less expensive than the other pen.
8
Other ways of comparing
• Using “as…as” (= the same)– Sri is as diligent as Mona (is).– He runs as fast I do.– His apartment is not (quite) as big as mine.
• Using double comparatives:– The harder you study, the more you will learn.– The warmer the weather is, the better I like it.
9
Conclusions
• To compare two or more things you can
use comparative adjectives or adverbs.
• Superlatives are used by adding the + adjective + est (i.e. the tallest, the nicest, etc.) or the most for three-syllable words.
• You can use a bit, much, a little, more/ less, to modify your comparatives.
• You can also use “as … as” to say that two things are of the same quality.
