• Discussion:– Practicality of realising a 4MW amplifier;

• 2 MW amplifier in bits

• Discussion:– Practicality of realising a 4MW amplifier;

• 2 MW amplifier in bits – reconstruction• 4 MW – need to upgrade to a higher voltage• Tubes

– TH116 Tube no longer easily available» Old ISIS tubes removed at 2.3 MW

– TH170 alternative tube not a 4 MW tube– 4 MW split between 4 cavities

» Losses each time the power is split

– Concluded too many risks

5paul drumm, 19th May 2004

• …Discussion– Resolved to build two “2MW” circuits

• NF bunch rotation test circuit (88MHz)• Old circuit rebuilt to “2MW”

– 1 MW in Cavity ≈ 1.25 MW in the amplifier• “Old circuit” was limited to 1.8MW

– Output coupling redesign – Expect to obtain up to 2.8 MW with TH170 tube.

• Conclusion:– CERN will build two “2MW” power amplifiers

Timeline…• Daresbury

– Strip down and assess LBNL amplifiers 2004– Recondition LBNL circuits 2005– Develop Test stand 2005/6

• CERN– Rebuild 88MHz circuit back to 201 MHz 2005/6– Rebuild “old” circuit

• MICE – stage V– 4 amplifiers & 4 Cavities 2007?– ISIS old ISIS tubes close to 2MW per cavity…– Purchase TH116 tubes; above 2MW per cavity

• MICE – stage VI– 4 amplifiers & 8 Cavities– ISIS old ISIS tubes close to 1MW per cavity…– TH116 tubes; above 1MW per cavity

Other issues

• See meeting notes…– Phase adjustment needed?– Lifetime of old ISIS tubes at 2MW?– Fresh look at costs:

• DL can make in house…• Some spare CERN equipment (controls)• Various synergies…

– “rent” TH170 tube from CERN for tests– TH170 tubes - part of common funds?– Phase ±0.5o; Amplitude ±1% - sufficient?

Conclusion

• Robust Scheme for 8 MW / 4 Amplifiers– Identified major components– Plan for construction– Indicative Cost Estimates

• £620k refurbish LBNL circuits + missing components

• €100k to provide 2 amplifiers from CERN• €500k power splitting – Stage V to VI • Plus ~2 SY at DL• In the process of revising cost estimates…
