The region is now harnessing this longstanding knowledge and expertise, particularly from its core agricultural strength in grass-based production, in leading-edge research and innovative engineering technology.

Organisations and businesses in Northern Ireland are delivering products and services internationally in the areas of farm machinery, animal health, R&D, animal nutrition and medical / food diagnostics.

This international engagement is also seen in the contribution made to the development of farming and food industries worldwide. In Saudi Arabia, for instance, two brothers from Northern Ireland, Alistair and Paddy McGuckian, transformed farming throughout the Kingdom through their Masstock System and the establishment of the Almarai food company in 1977, the region’s leading producer of dairy, juices, bakery, poultry and infant formula products.

This longstanding commitment to farming and food has led to Northern Ireland developed one of Europe’s most advanced and industry-integrated agri-food research infrastructures. Indeed, Northern Ireland now has an international reputation in food safety through the pioneering research of the Institute for Global Food Security at Queen’s University Belfast, a centre which advises the UK and other governments on food safety.

This world-class ranking on food safety is being developed through a sharp focus on global best practice in areas such as feed assurance, traceability, and the implementation of leading edge R&D. Projects include screening techniques for contaminants by means of a structured, industry-wide risk-based surveillance programme.

Major contributions to agri-research are being made by both of Northern Ireland’s universities, Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University. Both are acknowledged centres of research excellence in areas such as agriculture, veterinary, food sciences and biosciences.

In addition, the region’s government-sponsored Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI), is a globally recognised specialist in dairying, meat production, animal husbandry, poultry diseases, innovative potato varieties, and crops, grassland, nutrition and food safety.

Northern Ireland’s historic focus on agriculture and the success of its pioneering and industry influenced research institutes have also contributed substantially to the development of an export-led cluster of companies such as Norbrook Laboratories specialising in veterinary drugs and treatments; Randox Laboratories, a specialist in diagnostics; and Devenish Nutrition, a global leader in animal nutrition products.

As a result of this rich and successful heritage in farming, engineering and academic research, Northern Ireland is ideally positioned to offer solutions to others seeking the expertise required to increase agricultural productivity.

Creating a new future for farming

The innovative technology that developed farm tractors for ploughing and operating other machinery was devised in Northern Ireland by Harry Ferguson, also a pioneer in aviation. In addition, the mechanical reaper, the original combine harvester, was created by Cyrus McCormick, an innovator with family roots firmly planted in Northern Ireland’s fertile soil. Farming is Northern Ireland’s biggest industry and one which has a far reaching impact across the economy. Skills and knowledge nurtured on the region’s farms are found today in key sectors such as engineering and in internationally regarded research institutes.

Introduction

What we do

Agquip is an agricultural machinery company based in Co. Antrim Northern Ireland. The company has designed and developed a range of machinery engineered specifically for large scale dairy farms, farm contractors and the bio gas industry.

The company uses CAD design technology to work with customers to design, manufacture and commission large scale slurry handling systems which are tailored to their specific requirements.

Innovative design

The Agquip Dribble Bar and Trailing Shoe use innovative distribution boots to ensure that slurry goes directly onto the surface, reducing waste and greatly reducing contamination of the grass leafs. The Dribble Bar can be used in conjunction with a slurry tanker or an umbilical feed operation.

Discharge Pipe Features:

• Super elastic• Kink-proof• Excellent weathering resistance• Plastic reinforced along its entire length• Sprung steel support allows feeder to be deflected by obstacles• Injection moulded rubber distribution boot is flexible and long lasting• CAD designed profile gives optimum flow characteristics. Both the Dribble Bar and the Trailing Shoe use the Vogelsang ExaCut Macerator to distribute the slurry manure. The slurry enters the side inlet of the ExaCut and flows directly into the distributor housing. The rotor, driven by a hydraulic motor, distributes the slurry to the dribble hoses. The rotor is designed to rotate in both

directions to prevent clogging and thus maximises operating time

Vogelsang ExaCut Macerator Features:

• Integrated foreign object separator• Compact construction• Excellent cutting• Continuous distribution• Minimal maintenance• Automatic knife adjustment• Cab control system to warn operator of blockages• Self-Sharpening macerator blades

The Agquip Design Team

The company’s in-house design team is continually designing products which improve the efficiency of the farming industry. The team recently designed a mobile app which can track the exact dosage rate of slurry being applied by their machinery, in real time. This permits more efficient usage of slurry and reduces wastage.

What we do

Crossland Tankers was formed in 1988 to manufacture, refurbish and repair road tankers. The company began designing and building new tanks on a small scale in the early 90s. Major investment in design and product development facilitated full scale production of tankers for the milk, food, waste, general purpose and chemical markets by the late 90s. This lead to a major expansion in the company’s product range.

Crossland Tankers operate through two purpose built manufacturing facilities, one in Swatragh, Northern Ireland and another in Burnley, England. The company continues to invest in new manufacturing equipment and systems to improve efficiency and quality.

The Burnley plant has one of the largest paint booths in Lancashire. The booth is 23 meters in length which can be split to accommodate work on two tankers at once.

Some examples

Meeting Customer Needs

Crossland Tankers have developed a bespoke combination trailer in conjunction with one of the UK’s largest dairy company, Arla Foods. This trailer is breaking new ground and setting the standard for the dual transportation of unprocessed milk and finished dairy products, Arla’s new hybrid trailer combines a milk tanker (designed and manufactured by Crossland), and a refrigerated container.

Arla had identified the logistical need to collect unprocessed milk and deliver finished milk products as efficiently as possible and pondered the possibility of doing both in the one trailer. As there were occasions

when they were sending out a vehicle full of finished product then later sending out an empty tanker to collect milk, where they could both travel the same route, but carry a load in the opposite direction.

Arla came to Crossland Tankers with this problem and our team of experienced in-house designers developed a milk tanker which could be housed below a refrigerated container. The tanker has a capacity of 19,000litres and the 12.2m long trailer operates at a maximum gross vehicle weight of 44tonnes. This tanker trailer combination is currently being utilised on many Arla sites including the new super dairy at Aylesbury.

Arla have reported that each vehicle saves 60000 litres of fuel per annum and reduces CO2 emissions by 155 tonnes per annum

Bespoke Design - 44T GVW Farm Collection Milk Tank

In response to demand from our customer, Dale Farm, Crossland Tankers have designed and built an innovative steering 29,000L 44T Farm Collection Milk Tank.

Utilizing a Tridec steering system, BPW axles and a specially designed and manufactured Crossland tanker shell, this trailer can reach farms which were previously inaccessible to anything larger than a 26T GVW rigid tanker.

The tanker was trialled for durability over a 12 month period before production began in earnest.

Dale Farm now operates in excess of 10 of these vehicles and the concept is spreading, with these tankers being delivered to Milk customers all over the UK and Ireland.

Where we work

Cunningham has a Global customer base and as well as GB and the Republic of Ireland, have worked closely with clients in markets including Europe, Middle East and New Zealand.

Some examples

Slurry Store Covers

Specialised covers for overground slurry stores increase the actual slurry storage of the tank by keeping the rain out. It keeps in nitrogen that could otherwise be lost to the environment and reduces the cost of spreading rain water normally collected by the tank. Cunningham can make the covers for any tank size. The system uses a centre beam which is bolted to the floor of the tank using a stainless steel bracket. A stainless steel cone is put on top of the column and the material is then bolted into place.

The cover allows the end-user to comply with the environmental permit for intensive farming and Environment agencies recommend that all slurry stores are now covered.

Wind Breakers

This product can be used throughout any farm that is striving to cut down the amount of wind that is driving through the yard. The Wind Breakers are made from Cunningham’s heavy-duty PVC MESH, reinforced with 1.5 tonne webbing.

Wind Breakers are mostly used on the sides of sheds to keep wind out but can be adapted for any use by Cunningham’s highly skilled workforce that can make end-users wind break to suit and size or shape.

Fertiliser Storage

Keeping stock at the right level can be challenging and agricultural clients have found that sometimes they have more stock than can be stored inside.

In this case, Cunningham’s clients have purchased the company’s bespoke storage covers enabling them to store stock outside without the danger of getting it spoilt by rain. The covers can be wrapped right round the stock or shaped like a tent to keep stock clean and dry.

What we do

Eco-Systems Engineering specialises in the manufacture of waste incineration systems and washing equipment primarily for the Agricultural and food production markets. The products are aimed at:• Poultry farmers• Contractors working for farms / washing contractors

Incinerators

Eco-Systems Engineering’s on-farm incinerators are an efficient, cost-effective and bio-secure method of disposal. With greatly reduced fuel consumption and stack emissions (no visible smoke from the flue), due to a highly effective after-burner, it is also very environmentally friendly.

Because of the unique design, the waste is placed on the grate and all the heat generated by the burner, which is below the grate, is passed around and through the load and therefore no heat is wasted. The temperature is maintained to the regulation 850c which prevents overheating and saves fuel.

To protect the environment from contamination and to help prevent the spread of disease, all fluids are contained within the incinerator by a bunded sump, these are then burnt-off or evaporated when the machine is fired.

The company’s incinerator products

The company’s incinerator products have the relevant British Standards, are CE-marked and Department of Agriculture-approved.

Slat & Mat Washers

The Easy Clean 600T poultry equipment cleaning system provides clients with an effective way to wash slats and mats. With two operators, 400 mats can be washed per hour. Within a one man operation, 180+ slats can be washed in the same timeframe.

In addition to this, the Eco-systems 600T can also wash flat slat bars at a rate of:• 1 typical breeder house of bars in 20 minutes (with 2 operators) • Up to 480 nest mats per house for enriched cages (with 2 operators)

Other washing rates provided by the product are as follows:• For an 8,000 bird free-ranges, barn and breeder unit it takes 1 to 1.5 hours to wash• Film-faced plyboard - 186 metres washed per hour • Nest box trays (Jansen) - 150 metres per hour • The system can also be used to wash nest box lids and egg belt covers

The Easyclean 600T is available in the following variants:

• Free standing unit which requires an external pump and power supply and can also be made road legal for ease of transport• Tractor mounted, self- contained unit• Mobile, road-legal, tractor-driven, self-contained unit• Mobile, road-legal, engine-driven, self-contained unit

The product is fully unique, very user-friendly and importantly,

produces consistent results for fast washing with significantly reduced labour required.

Tailored Units

With its own ‘in house’ design using the latest CAD technologies and due to the fact that all products are manufactured locally, the company can design and build bespoke units to clients’ exact specifications.

Customer service, back-up and support are key cornerstones of the business – with maintenance and repair also offered where required.

Where we work The company’s washing equipment is supplied locally and nationally (mainland UK) and exported Internationally through dealers in Finland, Canada and North America.

Due to regulatory restrictions, Eco-Systems Engineering’s incinerators are targeted at local export markets (Great Britain).

The company is also keen to target new markets throughout Europe and further afield through dealership arrangements.

Some examples

Eco-Systems Engineering is the sole supplier of incineration equipment to Moy Park.

Eco-Systems Engineering sell and hire washing equipment locally to customers such as Moy Park (breeder and grandparent units) and to commercial egg laying units supplying eggs for human consumption. These units are usually barn fed, organic, free range, avery systems and enriched caged units for a multitude of companies such as Skea Eggs, Erne Eggs, Ballygarvey and Farmlay etc.

Design for Agriculture

Edge’s Mini-Loader Stockpiler (EDGE MLS65) is ideal for agriculture, and equestrian activities - e.g. animal bedding, loading trailers, stockpiling mulch, topsoil, aggregates, grain, animal feed.

It is a mobile conveyor designed with a low-level hopper - engineered to be fed directly by small-medium loaders and skid steers (Caterpillar, Bobcat, Manitou) – it has the capacity to handle materials from 3 loaders working together. The MLS removes the need to double-handle materials and provides huge time saving: up to 60% saving in costs and time.

Some of the other highlights of the EDGE MLS65:• Superb manoeuvrability around

the farm, grain store, etc• Designed for efficient

transportation• Long-life and low-maintenance

design• Optional power sources -

Diesel, Direct Electric, Hydraulic / Coupling, Dual Power

Where we work

95% of Edge equipment is exported – to Canada, Australia, North and South America, Africa, Mainland Europe, Asia and New Zealand.

Some examples

Almarai

Almarai is a €2bn Saudi food conglomerate. Alyoum is the group poultry business accommodating 15 million birds. Edge supplied 20

mobile Mini-Loader Stockpilers (MLS) - specifically designed to increase productivity and provide cost savings to Alyoum.

It previously used skid steer loaders to remove bedding, travelling the full length of the house to empty old bedding into trailers. The MLS has been engineered to be fed directly by small – medium sized loaders and skid steers. Edge removed the need for double handling of materials and delivered huge time savings. Also, the conveyor can be driven by a Direct Electric Drive - up to 40% more efficient than a traditional Diesel / Hydraulic system or indeed other types of Dual Power systems.

A 60% saving in costs and time has been delivered to Alyoum by EDGE.

Some examples

Curryglass FarmThe family business farm had 300

acres (all grass) with a Curryglass Holstein herd of 230 pedigree cows with herd average milk production of 10,840 litres per cow.

A future proof milking facility was key to ensuring the farm could be run effectively and efficiently.

Since the installation of the system, the performance of the new BouMatic milking system has met all the company’s expectations, for example:• The average milk yield has risen and feed costs have reduced • Because of the parlour parabone design, and the incentive of individual feed troughs, cows enter quickly and milk out without stress• The system allows enough time for each cow to be well prepared for milking and with time for udder cleaning and time for milk let down before milking commences • Time to milk is less than two hours per milking with an average throughput of 120 cows per hour• Animal welfare is excellent- Both mastitis and cell counts are well below the UK average • The variable speed milk pump and vacuum pump systems and heat recovery system means the whole system is energy efficient compared to traditional installations using continuous running pumps• Since the installation the system has run without any mechanical or electrical problems

What we do

Erth Engineering offers a range of non-powered cultivation equipment for the agriculture sector. The company is focused on providing innovative solutions to challenges that have been facing farmers and groundsmen for many years.

The key product offerings to the agriculture sector are the Panbuster grass and arable subsoilers and the Agriseeder grass drill.

Panbuster – Grass & Arable Subsoiling

Grass subsoiling results in a more free-draining soil structure and improves plant production in wet conditions. The increased root depth improves grass production in dry conditions. Independent tests show an average dry matter increase of over 20% in a fifteen-month period.

The Panbuster:• Offers reduced wear costs• Requires less power• Minimises downtime

In addition, the auto-reset function actively helps keep down stones resulting in:• Improved worm activity• Improved soil fertility• Reduced poaching• Improved rooting structure

and depth• Extended growth season• Increased grass production.

The Panbuster also offers:

• More hydraulics, with an enclosed ram system for better action and reliability • More control, with hydraulic depth adjustment • The ability to alter lift by changing pitch with top link• More protection with high lift height, side swing and shearbolt• More strength with solid 50mm steel and high-grade steel fixtures• Bushed auto-reset pull points and constant pressure disks which mean slits are cut at the same depth throughout working range.

Agriseeder – Grass Drill

Moisture is the single most important element needed for germination. By cutting a slit in the ground - using the Agriseeder - a natural moisture trap is produced so that seed germination is maximised and young seedling are sheltered whilst they anchor their roots directly into the soil. If a slit is cut too deep, the seedling can fail and if cut too shallow then it can lose out on the advantages of the slit therefore good depth control - as ensured by using the Agriseeder - is essential.

Grass fields are mostly undulating so depth control is more difficult. Most drills have a sprung loaded system to help cope with undulations but can severely compromise depth control as all the weight can be concentrated over several coulters.

A secondary suspension system is incorporated into the Agriseeder’s auto contour systems to increase flexibility. The drill frames are partitioned into 1m sections and the download is applied to each by a hydraulic ram. The rams are linked so download per frame equalises

despite undulations. This is seen by the changing ram positions as the machine goes down the field and proven by the consistency of the cuts.

The company has recently developed a new closer-setting 32-row drill.

What we do

Erth Engineering has delivered products to clients throughout the UK and Ireland.

Machines have also been exported to France, New Zealand, Canada and South America and the company is keen to expand into new markets throughout Europe and the rest of the world.

“The weight of the cow can be distributed through the walls of the CowSlip and not just through the sole. CowSlips encase the whole foot, helping them to stay in place as the glue sets. This stops them slipping back along the sole which can happen with blocks.” Roger Blowey, Gloucestershire Vet, Farmer’s Weekly 23rd July 1999

“It is possible to apply the shoe even in cold weather, it glues at any temperature….. the easy handling (you mix the glue using the Cowslip as a cup) makes faster application without any mess.” Dr. B. Huot – Bureau Veterinaire Lac Champlain, Quebec

Clinical Study

“A short term study of 15 lactating cows suffering from sole abscess formation demonstrated a rapid return to milk production following paring out and drainage of the abscesses in combination with the application of the CowSlip to the healthy claw. Milk yield over a 7 day period improved an average of 16.8lbs for early and 7.2lbs for late lactation cows. CowSlips offer a convenient and highly effective alternative for treatment of claw disorders requiring rest of the affected digit.” J.K. Shearer and J.B. Elliot, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida

What we do

The Institute for Global Food Security (IGFS) conducts cutting edge research into a vast range of factors that affect every aspect of the food supply chain.

Since the inception of the UK’s first Institute of Agri-Food and Land Use in 2006, the work of the Institute has become internationally-recognised for its excellence in research and teaching. Over time, the Institute has focused even more intently on its core founding principles, resulting in rebranding to become the Institute for Global Food Security.

The Institute proactively engages with a diverse range of stakeholders across the entire agri-food sector (food producers, processors, retailers, economists, consumer organisations, etc.), locally, nationally and on a global level. This not only places the Institute at the forefront of global agri-food initiatives, but is also of major benefit to the local industry

as it competes in the world market.

Work at the Institute focuses on the following major topics:• Farms of the Future• Integrity of Global Food Supply• Promoting Health – tackling disease through better nutrition

Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, key research themes include:• Food Safety and Integrity• Human Nutrition and Health• Animal Health and Welfare• Parasitology• Plant and Soil Science• Climate Change• Invasive and pest species• Marine and Freshwater Bioresources• Economics of Food Security

The major challenge for industry is to provide sufficient safe, sustainable and nutritious food for the vast growing global population using ever decreasing resources. The Institute will be a key partner in national and global efforts to address the issues.

Where we work

IGFS works on a local, national and global level across the full spectrum of agri-food stakeholders.

Some examples

The NI Agri-Food Strategy Board’s “Strategic Action Plan in Support of the Northern Ireland Agri-Food Industry” (published April 2013) referred to IGFS’ role in developing Northern Ireland as a “Food Fortress”:

“Leading-edge R&D has strengthened our ability to screen for contaminants. These techniques have been developed by The Institute of Global Food Security at Queen’s University Belfast, now a recognised world-leader in these technologies, and are being

introduced to the food industry in a progressive manner. Collaborative development projects on rapid dioxin testing are also underway. However, it is critical that the Agri-Food industry exploits this facility to develop world-class systems throughout the supply chain. This will enhance and protect our reputation as a source of food and help to position Northern Ireland as the partner of choice for retailers, in particular, seeking to demonstrate a strong commitment to safe food for consumers.”

“Elliott Review into the Integrity and Assurance of Food Supply Networks - A National Food Crime Prevention Framework” released by the UK Government (July 2014).

This major Review was conducted by Prof Chris Elliott (Institute for Global Food Security).

Research Evaluation Framework (REF2014)

‘Agriculture, Veterinary and Food Science’ at Queen’s University, Belfast was rated number 1 in the UK based on research intensity and within the top 5 for research quality and impact.

European Whole Vehicle Type Approval

Where we work

Ireland, UK & Europe.

Some examples

Bespoke Trailers – Vegetable Growers

One of JPMs Devon based dealers approached the company to design

and build a range of bespoke trailers for vegetable growers. The new trailers had to:• Be lighter than the standard flatbeds on the market• Meet the health and safety requirements for people standing on the trailer while it moved• Have quick and easy side opening to facilitate quick turnaround for the removal of filled pallets• Have a specific clearance/track width so that the vegetables weren’t damaged as the trailer moved down the rows• Be able to be towed behind a tractor that was already fitted with picking equipment

The new trailer is now in full production and has been added to the JPM range.

Hydraulic Beaver Tail Trailer

JPM Trailers had a number of requests for a trailer that could easily convert from a beaver tail low loader to a flatbed trailer, hence preforming the roles of two trailers. The JPM team designed a trailer with an 8ft rear which could be hydraulically lowered to the ground so as to form a ramp to facilitate the loading of wheeled equipment. The trailer is now available as part of the JPM range.

Compressor / Implement trailer

The company was approached by one of its European dealers to design and build a new range of commercial trailers for carrying a large drill compressor. The trailer had to meet the full commercial specification while also being able to meet Norwegian road regulations. The JPM team designed a single axle trailer that was easily manoeuvred by a loading shovel / telehandler while being used in the quarry. The trailer was also manufactured to facilitate a specific model of compressor being bolted directly to it. Diesel tanks were incorporated into the trailer to feed the compressor. Approximately 80 of these units have been sold in the past 8 months.

Accreditations

• EWVTA – European Whole Vehicle Type Approval• International Organisation for Standardisation, (ISO 9001)• CE Marking & BS Standards• French Agricultural Trailer Certification• French Commercial Trailer Certification

Where we work

McCauley Trailers Ltd. has an international market presence in more than 16 countries. Since beginning exporting in 2004, the company has experienced considerable growth in export markets and has successfully set up partners in Finland, Norway, Denmark, Holland, France, Sweden, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Iceland, Australia, America and New Zealand.

Some examples

Working in Partnership

McCauley Trailers received an enquiry from a French company for agricultural trailers to re-sell in its local market. The initial problem was that when the company purchased a trailer from the UK, they had to gain individual approval from the government test centre for each trailer. McCauley Trailers worked with the French government and passed all the approval criteria allowing its trailers to be registered in France without an individual test. This resulted in faster lead times, reduced cost and increased profit. The company then improved its distribution channels in the market allowing it to deliver directly to the end user.

Targeting International Markets

McCauley Trailers received a number of enquiries from outside Europe but initially found it difficult to convert these enquiries into sales due to the high transportation costs with Roll On Roll Off (RORO) shipping. In response the company re-designed the assembly of its trailers to facilitate the shipping larger volume of units in a sea container. The sea containers are less expensive to transport, reducing the cost and making the McCauley Trailers offering more attractive to countries outside of Europe. i.e. Africa, New Zealand, Australia.

What we do

Moore Concrete offer a comprehensive range of precast products for housing livestock which has been developed since the late 1970’s. This range includes slats, cubicle bases, cubicle end walls, support beams, pre-stressed wall panels & passage covers all of which are CE Marked. In addition to this we also manufacture portable Bulk Storage walls, including Freestanding Retainer Walls and Bunker Walls.

Moore Concrete has been concentrating on developing its offering to clients in the agricultural market including Dairy, Beef Farmers and Arable Farmers across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. The company’s success in the sector has come about through identifying the precise needs of its customers and through manufacturing innovative, high quality precast products to meet these needs.

The provision of a reliable service to its customers, including the delivery of products at the agreed time, is an essential cornerstone of the business.

Products & Services

The company’s products for the agricultural market fall into two categories:

i. Animal Health – Surefoot Slip- Resistant Slats

ii. Precast concrete solutions

In recent years this has included the introduction of the following products:

• Surefoot™ Slip-Resistant Slat – the need for this product has arisen from the fact that 1% of cows are prematurely culled on each farm annually, due to slip related injuries.

• Bunker Wall – customers required a product which did not need to be bolted down, was portable and was also a shape which allowed for the free flow of material to the bottom of the silo.

Moore Concrete is accredited in accordance with:

• Investors in People• Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) – Gold 2014• ISO 14001• ISO 9001• OHSAS 18001• CE Marked

Where we work

The company operates – through a series of stockists - across the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

Some examples

Moore Concrete has supplied approximately 100 3.6m Bunker Walls to a Meal Milling Company in Cheshire. The company opted to remove existing walls and use Moore Concrete’s because of the ease of use, stating: “Moore Bunker Walls have excellent curved shape for easy flow of materials. The 100mm straight section at the base facilitates easy lifting of meal or grain. Highly recommended.”

The company has also supplied products for a floor in a Dairy Unit in Anglesey. This included Support Beams, Cubicle Bases and Surefoot Gang Slats.

“We purchased the Surefoot slats for our new dairy setup. We feel the cows are more confident on the Surefoot slats, this can be confirmed by the positive bulling activity we see. Also, we are getting great yields … We use a robotic scraper every 40 minutes and we are extremely happy with the cleanliness of the area due to the Surefoot slats … we have just taken deliveries for Phase 2 .”

Richard Roberts, Anglesey, Wales.

The company has also supplied products for a floor in a Dairy Unit in Staffordshire:

“We are extremely happy with both the product and service we received from Moore Concrete. We opted for Surefoot Slats in our new cubicle shed. Our milk yields have increased … the new slats did not wear the cow’s feet as much as freshly laid concrete would have ... cow’s confidence has increased … and the cleanliness of the cows does not compare.”

Recently, a new version of the grassland Uni-Drill was introduced as a direct result of customer research and feedback, which offers clients the following:• Close row spacing, so that true one pass seeding can be made into grass/cereal stubble, or a conventional seedbed

• A compact 3 point linkage chassis, for quicker headland turn performance in smaller field’s

• A central seed metering system, for high speed accurate sowing combined with the ability to sow down to the very last seed quantity with all seed types

• The soil engaging unit is from the previous, well-established grassland unidrill, on a trailing rubber suspension arm

• A 3m working width and drills 32 rows with the spacing reduced to 90mm or one-third less than the previous model

The system was trialled extensively in 2010, with very positive results. The unidrill places small seed in contact with soil at the correct depth, as well as a single disc and seedtube coulter arrangement, so the percentage of seed to germinate is very high.

By using the Unidrill: • New seeds can be introduced into existing swards, either by seeding directly into glyphosate sprayed off grass stubbles, or by

stitching in without chemical, using cultural control of the existing sward

• Seeding into cereal/pulse stubble’s, or conventionally tilled seedbeds can be easily achieved with absolutely minimal changes in set up

With the professional contractor in mind, the machine is heavy duty, with quality components, and is relatively maintenance free.

Moore Unidrill Ltd. is also the main Irish importers for SUMO UK Ltd. cultivation and drilling equipment and regional distributors of Horsch cultivation and drilling equipment. Where we work

What we do

Northern Engineering is a progressive engineering firm focused on the design and manufacture of products which improve animal welfare and increase operational efficiency in the agriculture industry.

Innovative Design - The Cow Tipper

The company has designed and manufactured an innovative product called the Cow Tipper. The Cow Tipper is a new hydraulic roll over cattle crush that is specifically designed with both the animal and the operator in mind.

With lameness reported to be the third most common reason for culling cows on dairy farms, after infertility and mastitis, the Cow Tipper is designed for quick and safe access to all four feet for inspection and treatment.

Unlike conventional upright crushes where the operator has to lift each foot individually causing a lot of stress to the animal and the user, this crush allows the operator to be able to turn a cow or bull over on its side so that all four feet are visible at the same time for inspection and treatment. The crush is fitted with a hydraulic extendable rump rail that guides even the most stubborn animal into the crush and vastly reduces the amount of effort and time often needed to get some animals into a crush.

Although called the Cow Tipper this crush is capable of rolling over the largest of bulls.

Return on Investment

• Time – tests have shown that by using the Cow Tipper, farmers can treat up to six animals in the same time it takes to treat one using the upright method. • Medication - Savings on medication as large bulls no longer have to be anaesthetised to be treated for lameness.• In the average dairy herd 16 out of every 100 cows is affected by lameness per year with an average incidence of 22 cases per 100 cows – some cows being affected more than once. The average costs due to lameness per 100 dairy cows is calculated by the Department of Agriculture & Rural Development in Northern Ireland, to be around £4000 per year. This can be eradicated through using the Cow Tipper to facilitate treatment.

Target Sectors

Agriculture Industry

Accreditations/Certifications

Where we work

Northern Engineering supplies the Cow Tipper direct to customers in Ireland and the UK. To date the company has sold the product in the following markets: Ireland • UK • IsraelThe company is in the process of establishing a European dealer network to service the increasing interest in the Cow Tipper in those markets.

Some examples Customer Satisfaction

A Vet based in Orkney, Scotland reported that in the 12 months after purchasing the Cow Tipper he was able to treat 6 times more animals than in the 12 months before the purchase. This is an increase of 500% in operational productivity.

Going Global

A relatively new company, with an innovative product offering, Northern Engineering has witnessed a significant increase in interest in its Cow Tipper from across the globe. A farmer from Israel contacted the company as he had seen the Cow Tipper in action on the Northern Engineering Ltd. website. He was so interested in the Cow Tipper he immediately placed an order and has reported significant cost savings as a result. Northern Engineering has received numerous enquires from all around the world and is in the process of setting up a dealer network to meet this demand.

Some examples

With over 25 years’ experience Nugent Trailers has introduced its latest addition to Trailer Suspension, the Parabolic Equaliser.

Although parabolic springs have had superior strength characteristics to other forms of suspension systems, trailer manufacturers have long been trying to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional parabolic spring suspension system.

Nugent Trailers has applied automotive design philosophy, to develop this innovative solution which utilises the extended load carrying capacity and durability of the Parabolic Spring Suspension. By inserting a secondary rubber damper between the chassis along with a unique pivot slipper plate, this creates an additional suspension element and ensures the springs are now fully engaged on both the compression and rebound cycle to cancel out vibration and drastically reduce suspension chatter. The Parabolic Equaliser with its additional damping effect, aids in reducing the stresses on the chassis, the body frame, tow couplings and limits shock waves that may be transmitted to the tow vehicle.

With Nugent’s unique Patented Parabolic Equaliser enhancing the Parabolic Spring Suspension, customers have all the advantages of parabolics, but now with the additional benefits associated with suspension axles - all in one system.

What we do

Redrock Machinery is a European-wide manufacturer, supplier and exporter of agricultural equipment and machinery. The company’s products include:• Vertical Mixer Feeders• Paddle Mixer Feeders• Silage Blockcutters• Slurry Pumps / Mixers• Slurry Tankers• Agricultural Trailers• Grass Forks / Buckrakes / Silage Grapes

Manufacturing a broad suite of equipment, Redrock’s core product range focuses on winter feeding and slurry handling equipment, in which it has a strong reputation and market niche.

Winter Feeding Range

Redrock Machinery’s winter feeding equipment is designed to enable farmers to feed their livestock during the period in which they are inside. Overall, these machines are attractive to customers / farmers who want to become more efficient and control costs. Over a period of time, the cost of these machines can be more than outweighed by the savings from their actual use.

One key product from this range is the Paddle Feeder. The Paddle Feeder is designed to enable silage to be cut to certain lengths to help the cows’ digestion. The Paddle Feeder also possesses a weighing system that allows exact measurements for supplements being added to the silage. Both these factors combined, allows the farmer to:

i. Keep a control on costs as well as;

ii. Identify what the exact needs for the cows are - to enable them to produce at the highest output.

Slurry Handling Range

The slurry handling range consists of slurry tankers and slurry pumps. Slurry tankers range in size from 1,100 gallons to 5,000 gallons. The slurry pumps also range in size from 6’ 6” to 10’ and come in three variations to allow maximum efficiency depending on the size of the tractor powering the pump.

Overall, Redrock Machinery possesses extensive knowledge in the agricultural machinery market. The company’s products have evolved and have been adapted

to meet the needs of farmers. The company continually strives to ensure that it identifies the future needs of farmers through its dedicated R&D department.

Where we work

While maintaining a strong position in its domestic market - Northern Ireland, the company exports the majority of its production to international markets including the Republic of Ireland, Great Britain, continental Europe and further afield, through an extensive distributor network.

During the last 2 years, Redrock Machinery has put in place a team of agents in France to act on behalf of Redrock. These agents have succeeded in securing a vast network of dealers throughout France. Future projects involve expanding into Scandinavia, Japan, China, Australia and New Zealand. Redrock Machinery currently supplies small amounts of product into these locations.

Some examples

As part of the establishment of an agent and dealer network in France, Redrock undertook studies to identify the effect of the use of blockcutters and paddle feeders as opposed to the alternatives in the market.

These studies returned extremely positive results and identified that cost and time efficiencies can be gained by the use of these products. In particular a study on the paddle feeder identified that material cut to a certain length can be digested by the livestock more readily and as a result increase milk production. Such studies have led to increased interest in these products - both locally and throughout Europe.

The Greenmount Campus Estate provides outstanding natural resources for use by students

undertaking a range of agricultural and environmental courses. A new dairy unit and office block provides for a herd of 150 cows and contain innovative and state-of-the-art technology throughout.

RHI were asked to put forward a water recycling system design which would best meet the requirements in terms of functionality and cost effectiveness.

Solution

The solution offered married a 35,000L rainwater harvesting tank, existing borehole and recycled cooling water sources - providing additional mains water as a back-up.

Benefits

When there is a particular demand within the system, priority is given to rainwater and recycled cooling water followed by borehole water with mains water as a back-up. This has resulted in a minimal mains water requirement within the dairy unit.

Tate House Poultry Farm, Monaghan

RHI recently developed a system for a large poultry farm in Co. Monaghan incorporating the recycling of rainwater and borehole water with mains water as backup. Following a sterilisation process, the additional water is used for drip feeding the birds.

Titanic Building, Belfast

RHI’s systems at the Titanic Building, Belfast filters rain collected from the building’s 3,000 square metre rooftop. The harvested rainwater is used to replace mains water for toilet flushing resulting in “significant” savings.

What we do

Wilson Agri specialises in designing, manufacturing and supplying products for the inside of farm buildings, from cow mattresses, cubicles, passageway rubber, tip-over water drinkers, lights & ventilation curtains. All of these ensure that the cow has a clean dry comfortable bed, with clean fresh water and air, with reduced pressure on the hooves when turning at the feed barrier.

A Commitment to R&D

Wilson Agri recognises the importance of new product development and is at the forefront of developing new technology for the agriculture market, particularly to improve cow welfare. The company has a dedicated design team which is committed to bringing new, innovative products to the market.

Cowcoon

One of the most recent products designed and manufactured by Wilson Agri is the innovative Cowcoon hybrid stall.

A polyethylene tube on the lower body of the stall partition guides the cow, offering ductile support to her body thus hugging the cow, ensuring that she rests securely, comfortably and without the risk of bruising or swelling

commonly associated with all steel partitions.

Pasture GelMat DS

Wilson Agri also supplies the pioneering pasture gel mat. Pasture GelMat DS provides several advantages similar to deep bedded sand stalls, without the associated challenges. Test results using pressure point body mapping reveal that the GelMat DS forms to the cow, relieving all pressure points while virtually eliminating hock sores.

Wilson Agri’s extensive in barn studies have proven the GelMat DS results in cows lying longer, shifting or moving less and therefore being more productive. Thanks to its patented formula, the GelMat DS system will not compact or harden therefore increasing its lifespan and ensuring an excellent return on investment for Wilson Agri customers.

Target Sectors

The Agriculture industry.

Where we work

Wilson Agri supply products through a network of distributors and direct to customer in the following markets:

• Ireland• UK• Europe• Africa

Some examples

Targeting New Markets

Wilson Agri was approached to assist a customer, based in Zambia, with the design and overall planning for the layout of cubicles and passageways in a major farm building. The company then assisted the farmer with the shipping of 400+ Wilson Agri C50 Cubicles to Zambia. The customer was then able to use the comprehensive instructions on the Wilson Agri Website to self-install these Cubicles. The customer has since been in touch to order additional cow care products from Wilson Agri.

Wilson Agri Track Record – Sells Itself

Wilson Agri were contacted by a customer based in Sweden who was building a 400 Cow dairy barn. The customer seen the Wilson Agri website and had seen the details of some installations the company had completed in the UK. The customer was so impressed by these installations, he made a trip to Northern Ireland to see them first hand. Wilson Agri provided the customer with a tour of a number of the installations and he contracted the company to complete an installation at his premises. He has since asked the company to fly to Sweden and advise him on the fit out of additional cow housing facilities.

What we do

Wylie Engineering is an award-winning business focused on the design and manufacture of high quality agricultural and industrial machinery. The family business, established in 1977 offers the following products to the livestock farming industry:• Silage Grabs• Shear Grabs• Auto Shear Grab• Push-Off Buckrakes• Grass Toppers

Wylie Engineering’s modern purpose built factory comprises 30,000 sq. feet and is fully equipped with the latest design and manufacturing technology to produce quality machinery to meet market requirements.

Customer-Driven Product Range

The company is consistently striving to add to and improve on existing product ranges with machinery that is long-lasting, innovative and that provides end-users with increased efficiency and improved farm performance. Ongoing market communication, feedback and customer requests has allowed Wylie Engineering to adapt products that produce tangible, positive results for end-users.

Wylie Engineering’s products are well-known for their durability and lifespan and this is reflected in the number of return customers, customer referrals and client testimonials.

Product Focus – Auto-Shear Bucket

The all new “Auto-shear bucket” has been designed and developed based on the highly successful Wylie shear grab with the added benefit of being able to handle fine cereal and powder or granule type materials.

In today’s farming practice, added fine materials are increasingly recognised as advantageous to feed dairy and beef animals. Under normal conditions the farmer requires two machines to cut silage with a shear grab and then use a separate bucket to handle loose material, and the extra time to change between the two machines. The Wylie “Auto-shear bucket” simplifies the total operation by handling both operations.

Benefits of the Auto-Shear Bucket

• Enables the farmer to work more efficiently, lowering daily operational costs • The operator never has to leave the comfort of the tractor cab to change from shear grab to bucket • It grabs silage as efficiently as a conventional shear grab.• It collects, transports and deposits concentrate ie. Cereal.• It is especially efficient at transporting fine blow-away ground material• High-side walls improves carrying capacity• Simplicity of design is reflected by a single hydraulic circuit with no extra hydraulic requirements.

Focus on Innovation

Wylie Engineering’s total dedication to innovation, excellence and quality is reflected in the numerous awards received over the years. Products such as the heavy-duty flail and rotor grass toppers and the Auto shear bucket have helped Wylie Engineering achieve a total of 14 awards for innovation since 1989 at key Shows including:

• The Royal Highland Show, Scotland • Smithfield Show, England• Agromek, Denmark• Balmoral Show, Northern Ireland

Where we work

Wylie Engineering has clients across the UK, Ireland and Europe with products sold through a network of dealers in these markets.

Some examples

“The Auto shear bucket is an excellent and efficient way of loading a diet feeder. Not only can you measure the amount of meal you are using but it saves time also.” Robert Boston – Aberdeenshire

“Since purchasing the Auto Shear Bucket it saves me time and effort allowing me to focus my attention on other duties.” Gordon Fulton – Omagh – Dairy Farmer
