14. Critical Update ID001 DL Output Level Error caused by Band Calibration Bug

3 Dec. 2015 Thank you for using MT8821C. We sincerely apologize for numerous problems caused by the bug described in this

document. Below is a brief explanation about the details concerning this problem. 1. Background In order to cancel out the effects of temperature change into the measurement results in MT8821C, a calibration

mechanism (Band Calibration) which makes use of internal signals is implemented. It was found out that this process currently has a bug in which the output Level of the DL signals will deviate from its expected level upon the execution of Band Calibration command. This problem only has slight effects on applications where only 1 DL signal is generated using TX1 such as LTE, W-CDMA, TD-SCDMA, GSM, CDMA2000, etc. However, in LTE-A where multiple DL signals are generated, TX2 to 4 signal output levels can deviate up to 2dB depending on the frequency setting. This may cause various problems in UE tests such as RX sensitivity in which invalid results will be acquired. This bug can be fixed through software version update. 2. Occurrence This issue occurs when Band calibration is executed (No similar problem occurs through Full Calibration) regardless of the selected Tx port (Main/Aux). 3. Effects on Output Level Accuracy The impact of this problem to the output level varies depending on the TX (DL) used and the corresponding frequency

setting. The following table and illustration shows the additional error caused by this bug to the DL level accuracy specifications.

TX Severity of Effects* TX2 to4 Depending on the frequency, an error of about ±0 to

2dB affects the generated DL level. (Please check Annex. showing the relationship between frequency and output level error through a graph). Corresponding Standard : LTE-A, SCC1 to 3

TX1 About ±0.2dB of error affects the DL level regardless of the DL frequency. Corresponding Standard : LTE, W-CDMA, GSM, CDMA2000, 1xEV-DO, TD-SCDMA, HSPA, SEQ

* Similar conditions apply for LTE 2x2 MIMO – DL 2nd Antenna. (TX1 corresponds to the effects on PCC DL and TX2~4 for SCC1~3).

About Acquired Measurement Data from Previous Versions DL Level accuracy generally has little to no effect on Tx Test Measurements except some Open Loop Power Control

related tests but significantly affects various Rx Measurements such as Rx Sensitivity. In order to quantify the extent of the effects on TX1, the level accuracy of 10 MT8821C devices being manufactured were

tested. With standard range of ±1.0dB / Typical Value±0.7dB specified in the catalog, the actual measured worst range was measured to be ±0.3dB (350≦Frequency≦3800 MHz). With this worst case range of ±0.3dB and the additional ±0.2dB error due to this bug, the level accuracy will be ±0.5dB which still falls within the defined uncertainty requirement of 0.7dB by 3GPP standards. However, since this data is acquired using 10 devices, all measurement results cannot be guaranteed. If the above is acceptable, we believe that measurement result acquisition for each standard except LTE-A need not be repeated. On the other hand, Rx measurement data acquired through a setup that includes the use of Tx 2 to 4 need to be reacquired due to the substantial error caused by this bug 4.Countermeasure Please use the following software version in order to avoid this issue.

Annex. Tx Output level Error vs Frequency The relationship between Tx Output Level Error vs Frequency is shown in the following graph. The blue line near the 0dB range shows that the TX1 deviates from the expected output level only by ±0.2dB regardless of the frequency. The other lines shows that TX2 ~4 output level has a deviation of ±0~2dB depending on the frequency point.

TX Output Level Error vs Frequency (V30.12, 1 sample data)

*Expected Value is set to the DL level measured right after Fullcal. The deviation from that value is then quantified by measuring the output level for each points after executing Bandcal.

**Positive values indicate that the output level became higher than the measurement before Bandcal.

The following graph shows the improvement on the output level error using the new software version:

15. Critical Update ID002 LTE Power Control Tolerance measurement result is lower by 1.25dB Bug

22 Mar. 2016

Thank you for using MT8821C. We sincerely apologize for numerous problems caused by the bug described in this document. Below is a brief explanation about the details concerning this problem. 1. Issue LTE Power Control Tolerance – Absolute Power measurement result is displayed as 1.25dB lower than the expected

result due to an insufficiency in the result conversion process. Normal TX Power measurement and other measurement items are not affected. 2. Occurrence The issue occurs when performing measurements with Measurement Item set to Power Control Tolerance. The bug does not occur for Contiguous UL CA (“UL 2CCs Cont” is displayed in the General Information Display)

measurement. 3. Effect on Measurement Results Measurement items and the effect of the bug is detailed below.

Measurement Item Effect 6.3.5.1 Power Control Absolute power tolerance Since the result being evaluated is an absolute measurement

value, measurement result is 1.25dB lower than the expected value. In versions prior to V30.30, correct results are obtained when 1.25dB is added to the measured value.

6.3.5.2 Power Control Relative power tolerance There is no effect since a relative measurement value is being evaluated.

6.3.5.3 Aggregate power control tolerance There is no effect since a relative measurement value is being evaluated.

4. Countermeasure Please use the following software version in order to avoid the issue.

Standard Version LTE V30.30 or later
