Interconnection is the Keystone of Internet Economy 1

Efficient interconnections are necessary for new revenue opportunities and the Internet to thrive.

• Bandwidth savings

• Improved service quality

• New revenue opportunities

•Efficient spread of information to the citizens in matters of health, education etc

•Opens up for new markets

•Support administration for public and private sectors

•Make Mozambique a part of the Global Information Society

Opportunities and Threats in the Project Environment 3

Being aware of the threats in the project environment and having solutions or alternatives for them are the way we can handle them.

Opportunities Threats

• Idea of IXP since 2000 and the ISPs agreed upon the need in late 2001.• CIUEM offering hosting, maintenance and service for free during a starting phase.

• Lack of skilled network technicians.• Difficulties to get ASN from ARIN.• Difficulties to get IP addresses from ARIN.• Equipment not arriving in time.• ISP do not want to connect to IXP.• Difficulties in getting leased lines ISP-2-IXP.• Unpredictable environment of Mozambique…

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Project 3

Project management, common feeling of responsibility for the project and a lot of WORK is the way to handle the weaknesses of the project itself.

Strengths Weaknesses

•Different skills. •Very motivated project team.• Emerging feeling of team where everybody contribute and feel responsible.• Great resource in the coaching team.• Initiatives have been taken to get input and feed back from organizations with experiences.

• Lack of practical experience of working with interconnection technologies in the team.• Lack of IXP redundancy in current solution.• Deviations from Time plan.• No existing/decided management team of today.• No existing/decided maintenance team of today.
