• Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.” - Vince Lombardi

Tradition Never Graduates

This is not about individuals. It’s bigger than any one person.

Every decision will be made in the best interest of the publication.

We will all work toward a common goal.

Page 18: 1. motivation, leadership, work & fun

“When you find yourself in a position of strength, a position of power or authority, you can go one way or the other. You can be a person built for others, which is all about effort and empathy. Or you can just walk around like you’re better than everyone else, which is basically arrogance and indifference about the world around you.” - Jeffrey Marx, Seasons of Life

Never Settle

We are great, but we will continue to look

to improve.

THE FIST

With these five points, all of a sudden you’re part of something bigger than yourself. That’s

what being a fist is all about. You throw yourself completely into the group--by communicating,

by trusting, by being collectively responsible, by caring, and by having pride. If you continue to

do that through the years, you will develop a tradition of excellence. And that is what we will

continue to build here at Kirkwood--a tradition of excellence.

Point One: Communication

I’m going to tell you the truth if you’re doing something bad, if you’re doing something mediocre,

or if you’re doing something great.

Point Two: Trust

When we tell each other the truth and talk to each other face-to-face, trust is going to develop.

It’s amazing. How many of you really trust someone? Some of you may not trust anybody.

But if you’re part of something that’s bigger than you, something that you identify with,

something you throw yourself into, then you will be more apt to be able to trust the people in

that room. And that’s what we’re trying to build. A staff where we trust one another; where we

have confidence in one another.

Point Three: Collective Responsibility

We succeed and we struggle together. It’s not the any one individual’s publication, it’s our

publication. A fist embraces plural pronouns.

Point Four: Caring

We care for one another. If something happens, we’re there for each other, all the time.

Point Five: Pride

If we do all these things over and over, we develop the pride of being in that fist--whether it’s a

staff fist, a church fist or a family fist. We’re proud to say, “I belong to the Kirkwood High

School journalism program.”

Keep Kids Excited

I. FreedomII. Respect

III. High expectations

Page 33: 1. motivation, leadership, work & fun

I. FreedomThe program honors their First Amendment rights.

Students all want to be independent and in charge of their own lives. Journalism gives them that opportunity. It’s THEIR book. And that’s a GREAT thing.

Page 34: 1. motivation, leadership, work & fun

II. RespectStudents, like adults, know when they are respected.

J students are treated with respect on a daily basis--as individuals, as collaborators, as researchers, as writers.

Respect entails trust, and in your program students share the responsibility for learning with the teacher. While the teacher comes up with the curriculum, students implement it and practice real-world skills.

Page 35: 1. motivation, leadership, work & fun

III. High Expectations

My standards are high, and I find students, like adults, rise to meet them. My students always have.

At whatever point your program is at, start this.

Empower your kids. Get excited and create something beautiful.

Page 36: 1. motivation, leadership, work & fun

The point is to remember to have fun along the way.

It’s about the journey, not the destination.

Page 37: 1. motivation, leadership, work & fun

Start now, set the tone no matter where your program currently stands.

Motivation is a TEAM effort.Work together and enjoy your year together.

Page 38: 1. motivation, leadership, work & fun

Now go out there and take it!

This is YOUR TIME!
