FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Last Thursday and Friday the teachers had an opportunity to grow and learn at the Edifide Convention held at Redeemer College. These days are great for connecting with past colleagues, classmates and fellow teachers, as well as learning new and exciting ways to teach. As there are many workshops to choose from, this afternoon as a staff we will share our takeaways with each other.

Thank you to all who came out to the Membership Meeting / Capital Campaign Kick-off last Thursday. I know it was a long weekend for the children but appreciate the effort that parents made to make it out. It was good to lay it all before the Lord in prayer. Continue to uphold this endeavor in your prayers that God will provide all the funds needed to make these building plans happen, and that through each step of the way, there will not be delays, and all will go smoothly and as planned. And mostly that God’s Will will be done.

Also I want to give a big thank you to the OACSFoundation for a grant of $7500.00 which was used to purchase new tables for the library, tables and chairs for SK and Gr 1&2, as well as tables and chairs for the French room. The new furniture has perked up the classrooms and help to improve teaching in the different rooms.

Tasty tips! The industry giants market the foods with captivating slogans, songs and images. Their goal is to sell food - cereals, snacks, candy, crackers, and the list goes on. They pack salt, sugar and fat into these foods in the optimum quantity to capture the taste bud desire. If they reduce one of the three and call it low fat or low salt - they simply increase the other two portions. Oh, but it tastes so good! Without these three additions to food - the industry would cease to exist! Industry executives have said that they cannot produce a truly healthy alternative that people would eat. How do we find food good for us? For the next few weeks we will look at what is really in our food. Starting with sugar! Sugar Cutting edge technology is used to calculate the 'bliss' point of sugary snacks. The exact quantity to optimize taste and create the craving. The average amount of sugar consumed per year per person in 1821 - 4 kg in 1880 - 17 kg in 1970 - 53 kg in 1990 - 59 kg in 2012 - 73 kg Refined sugar is an unnatural product that comes from a natural product. It is not easily digested. We need to reprogram our taste buds. Suggestions - eat locally and seasonally. Enjoy fresh produce and avoid commercially prepared packaged foods. Your taste buds will gravitate toward natural foods. Prepare a container of carrots, celery, sliced apple or oranges.

Grade 8 day on Wednesday - wear your red shirts! Math - test was returned and taken up, corrections made today, it comes home for signature today. A follow-up quiz on Rational numbers test will be given on Thursday this week. Proposed test to follow next week. This will include formulas for grade 8 and coordinate grid for grade 7's. English - independent reading continues with a goal of 40 books; assessment of reading this week in class Science - tests came home on Wednesday last week for corrections and signature - did you see your son's or daughter's test? Friday will be a worship day where we will work on our own worship songs and Christmas music. MS. MIEDEMA– GRADE 5/6 • Class trip: Queen’s Park THIS Wednesday, Oct. 29, we will tour the Legislative Building, the

seat of our provincial government. We plan to leave the school by 10:00 a.m. and drive to Yorkdale Subway Station. From there, we will take the TTC to Queen’s Park. We’ll be back at TCS by 2:45 p.m. Students must dress for the weather – we will be spending time outdoors. Also, students must bring a bag lunch for the day. If the weather is dry, we’ll be picnicking in Queen’s Park. A big thank you for our volunteers: Mr. Yoon, Mrs. Baek, Mr. Bahadoor, Mrs. Herrarte, and Mrs. Abrahams will be driving.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

Most months this year we will have

professional artists visit our school and

demonstrate their art and techniques.

Crystal Benallick is our guest artist for

October. She loves encaustic art and will

share that method with the students.

Science: This week, we will finish up our Trees unit. It has been wonderful learning about God’s design for life through

trees.

Our next unit will be a Socials unit, called Our Historical Community. It will involve a class trip to Markham Museum

and a Pioneer School Day. On that day, students will have the opportunity to dress up as pioneer children. Start planning

your costume early.

Phys. Ed: Please make sure that your child has the Phys. Ed uniform every Monday and Thursday (TCS t-shirt, shorts,

Grade 3 Math: Having studied patterns in mathematics for much of September and early October, we are now focusing

on addition and subtraction strategies that will help us with mental math.

Mrs. Lise Grade 4 Math: Today we reviewed all that we have learned in this unit with a test on Wednesday the 29th. Our next unit,

which we will start on Thursday, is on Geometry.

Ms Miedema – Music Music: October Recorder Calendars are due on Thursday! Parents, please sign the calendars and send them to school on

time. Practice: New note: C. Practice Recorder Time #10-13.

MISS CHIANG – GRADE 1/2 Parent/Teacher dialogues will be this Tuesday and Thursday. I look forward to meeting with most of you. This is a great opportunity

for us to discuss how your child is adjusting to this new school year. Please feel free to come with questions about your child’s first

few months in grade 1/2.

Remember to keep reading at home. We are hoping to pull out the remainder of Frank’s teeth this week. Please sign the reading folder

and send it to school so that we are able to achieve our goal.

In math, we are working on estimation. We are working on making really good guesses on how many objects we have and then putting

them into groups of ten in order to count our actual amount. We are also developing our ability to adjust our estimations when we

understand the size of a group of ten before we fully finish counting.

In writing, we are beginning to write friendly letters. We are developing our ability to add “Dear” and “From” to our letters as well as

the appropriate comma at the beginning. Last week we were able to write friendly letters to each other in class.

Our Social Studies project went home last Friday. Students are asked to create family trees for both sides of the family (if possible).

These projects will be due Tuesday November 4. On this day, the students will present their family trees plus their special family

treasures to the class. We have extra class time designated specifically for these presentations. Please help your child participate

with the class by ensuring their project returns completed on Tuesday, November 4th. There are extra leaves available in the class

for your child to pick up when needed.

Mrs. Porter – Bible

Our memory verse for the next few weeks is still Hebrews 11:1,2 and 6. Ask your child for a bright green piece of paper with their

verses. We have learned the first 2 verses already and will continue to review and add verse 6 this week. Ask your child to practice

their verses and show you the signs we have learned for the words "hope", "certain/sure" and "faith". We continue our journey with

Abraham's twin grandsons Jacob and Esau. As always, I encourage you to read and re-read all of the stories we are studying here at

school. What a great habit to get into as a family! As a parent of 2 teens, we still treasure these family reading times that over the

years have expanded to include missionary biographies and Christian fiction. On that note, remember to check out the book fair this

week! A great way to build Bible knowledge and see how the Word of God applies to our lives.

MRS. GROOT & MRS. PORTER – SENIOR KINDERGARTEN Welcome back after a long weekend. I hope you enjoyed some quality family/friends time. We are into our final week of our

Fall theme. It has been a wonderful fall exploring God’s amazing creation. Last week we had fun learning about pumpkins:

cutting them apart, standing on them, making pumpkin muffins (thank you to Mrs. DeSouza), drawing and painting a pumpkin

and more. This week our fall focus will be yummy apples.

Our letter this week is Aa “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.” Revelation 22: 13. Aa is also for apple.

Our sight word for this week is ‘and’. We will also focus on the ‘at’ word family (i.e. sat, bat, cat, mat).
