Need to beautify lakesand holding pond

In today’s world when the life has be-come mundane, almost mechanical andthere is enormous pressure from all sidesfor all the age group of people, it is abso-lutely essential to vent out that pressure. This makes imperative for any city to havesufficient entertainment facilities wherepeople can relax and recharge themselvesfor the next day work.

While it is not possible and rather un-feasible to spend every weekend in a hillyresort, it is certainly possible to go to anearby area, not very far from home. Whileplanning a new city, the need for an enter-tainment facility is kept uppermost in mind. For Navi Mumbai too, right at the incep-tion stage it was emphasized that adequateentertainment facilities would be provid-ed. Blue prints for development plans wereprepared giving adequate attention toparks, boat clubs, golf clubs, theatre, cin-ema halls etc. However after almost threedecades, most of these projects are stillonly on drawing board. Even few, whichhave been developed, are also wilting, inthe absence of a clear policy on entertain-ment facilities.

Even today Navi Mumbaiites have togo to Mumbai, as there is an absolutedearth of entertainment facilities in thesatellite city. Although there are a num-ber of parks but due to lack of mainte-nance, the parks have become barren piec-es of land. Even the play equipment thathad been installed by CIDCO in variousparks, are today lying broken, damagedand rusted.

Navi Mumbai therefore desperatelyneeds more entertainment facilities. Boatclubs, water parks, theatres, amusementparks etc. need to be developed immedi-ately. Residents are shocked and are at aloss to understand the reason for misera-ble failure of NMMC on this front. In spiteof huge revenues being collected by of tax-es, very little is being utilized towards thissector. Further, while it is imperative toadd new facilities, it is also essential tomaintain the existing ones. At present, thecity desperately lacks on many fronts.Apart from the dearth of entertainmentfacilities, it miserably lacks in its beautifi-cation and cleanliness. The foul smell em-anating from nallahs, uncovered manholesetc.— are all tarnishing its image of a mod-ern city. The NMMC can utilize the hold-ing pond and facilities like boating, raftingetc. can be introduced. Already with mini-mum facilities provided the pond has be-come the centre of attraction. A little in-vestment from NMMC can prove to be aboon for the residents.

Has India become the cheapestproducer of solar power?

By C K Subramaniam

India’s energy fu-ture has four pillars -Energy access, energyefficiency, energy sus-tainability and energysecurity. Thus we goalong this line to makeour country self suffi-cient in solarenergy. Solar capacityhas increased sharplyin recent years, butrooftop solar needs apolicy boost. India’s re-newable transition hasso far been a successstory, with the share ofrenewables capacity in-creasing sharply in re-cent years. Rooftop so-lar is decentralised, itempowers ordinary peo-ple and communities, and does not requireland acquisition. It willprovide smaller unitsin particular with acheap, reliable source ofelectricity.

Solar energy is apower saver and sinceModi Government hastaken charge there ismore importance of pro-viding electricity to ev-ery nook and corner ofthe country. Instead ofwasting gas or electric-ity Solar Water Heatercan save the energy.Solar Water heater is adevice that can heat thewater upto a tempera-ture of 80 degree centi-grade. The system con-sists of a flat plate col-lector, a Water Tank, pipes and fittings. The

solar water heater canbe used both for com-mercial as well as do-mestic purposes. Youcan harvest abundantsolar energy throughSolar Water Heatingsystem, which can re-duce your electricity aswell as gas bills.

The cost saving mea-sures of Solar WaterHeating system andproviding electricity forcommon cause will bea boon to this country.2000 litre per day costsRs.3 lacs approximate-ly, and NationalisedBanks finance upto 80%of the unit cost. 2000litre capacity SolarWater heating systemis ideal for high risebuildings. Loan will bereleased specifically tothe MNES approvedsupplier of the unit. TheSolar Energy incidenton the absorber panelcoated with the selec-tive coating, transfersthe heat to the risingpipes underneath theabsorber panel. Thewater passing throughthe riser gets heated upand is delivered to thestorage tank. The SolarHeating System is pop-ular in South especial-ly in Karnataka. Forhousehold use one cango in for 300 Litres perday capacity system atthe cost of roughlyRs.50000/=. We canovercome power cutsand gas shortage in onestroke.

The issues relate toIndia’s conflicting de-sires to procure cheapsolar equipment, on theone hand, and to en-courage a domesticmanufacturing basethrough imposition ofimport duties, on the

other. The latter meansslower capacity addi-tions and higher tariffsin the short run. Theother is the expectationby power buyers, main-ly state-owned utilities, that solar power will beavailable at dirt-cheaprates in all parts of thecountry, when the costof generating solar pow-er can vary vastly.

India is also takinga lead in the Interna-tional Solar Alliance(ISA), launched at theParis climate changeconference in 2015.Headquartered in Gur-gaon and with 68 sig-natory countries, theISA will help in thetransfer of solar tech-nologies across mem-bers. India also seesthis as an opportunityfor the domestic solarindustry to find inroadsin some of the smallerand untapped marketslike Africa and SouthAmerica. Signifying itscommitment to sus-tainability and climateaction, India has giftedsolar panels — one eachfor the 193 UN mem-ber states — that arebeing installed on theroof of the United Na-tions headquartershere. The solar panels, which are valued abouta million dollars andgifted to all the UNmember states in asymbolic gesture, arepowered up to reach themax of 50 KW of gener-ation power.

Worldwide, renew-able energy has estab-lished itself as the tech-nology of choice for newpower generation ca-pacity and India’s re-cent status of lowest-cost producer of solar

power further reflectsan ongoing shift to-wards renewable poweras the driver of globalenergy transformation.India’s solar storythrough its compellingbusiness case is maxi-mizing the falling re-newable technologycosts as the key to fu-ture energy decarboni-sation. The country hasrealised that it is cheap-er to build and operatesolar farms than to runexisting coal-fired pow-er plants. Renewableenergy also has signifi-cant environment ben-efits making it the sin-gle biggest driver tohelp us meet our car-bon emission reductiontargets in our fightagainst climatechange. With India be-ing a growing economythe task is cut out tomake India solar pow-er generator for mak-ing a green world.

In the coming yearsenergy storage will playa key role in makingRenewable Energy afirm source of powerand further reducingthe landed cost of re-newable electricity. Ad-ditionally, with the ad-vent of Electric Vehi-cles, using renewableenergy in the charginginfrastructure will fur-ther boost the growth ofthe industry. With theGovernment’s support, developers getting longterm visibility in termsof project pipeline andactual off-takers wit-nessing value in adopt-ing solar electricity, In-dia is poised to secureits renewable future. The writer is freelancerfrom Sanpada, Navi Mum-bai

About the ‘Thuglak Darbar’The most outspoken critic of all times, legendary Tamil political satirist,

Magazine Editor and Actor “Cho Ramaswamy” has been brought alive inthis play where the story goes like this – “Cho” in heaven is worried aboutthe upcoming Indian Parliamentary elections and along with Sage Naradadevises a plan to set the political situation straight and sends Sultan Mu-hammad bin Tughluq and Ibn Batuta, back to earth, where they are told toidentify 40 honest people to stand in the election. Tughluq tries his best toconvince both the ruling party and the opposition party in Tamil Nadu andfail. Following this, he kidnaps the majority of MLAs, boards them in a“resort” and goes to become the Chief Minister. What happens next – didTughluq fulfil the assignment from Cho, or, did he become corrupt too?One has to see the play and enjoy the pun to the hilt and see what mes-sage Cho tries to send across.

All Souls’ DayAll Souls’ Day which is celebrated by the Cath-

olic Church on November 2 ever year is a Chris-tian festival that honours all Christian souls whohave died. Many people visit the cemetery anddecorate the graves of their loved ones. SpecialMasses are celebrated in cemeteries and in churches on that day.

Catholics on this day remember and pray for the souls of people whohave died and who are in Purgatory – the place in which those who havedied atone for their sins before being granted the vision of God in heav-en. The thought behind this is that when a soul leaves the body of thedead person, it is not entirely cleansed from venial sins. But, throughthe power of prayer, the people on earth can help these souls gain heav-enly vision they seek. At each one’s home, a special rosary is recited toremember and pray for the souls of their family members, friends, etc.

According to Catholic belief, the soul of a person who dies can go toone of three places. The first is heaven, where a person who dies in astate of perfect grace and communion with God goes. The second is hell, where those who die in a state of mortal sin are naturally condemned bytheir choice. The intermediate option is purgatory, which is thought tobe where most people, free of mortal sin, but still in a state of lesser(venial) sin, must go.

Purgatory is necessary so that souls can be cleansed and perfectedbefore they enter into heaven. There is scriptural basis for this belief. The primary reference is in 2 Maccabees, 12:26 and 12:32. “Turning tosupplication, they prayed that the sinful deed might be fully blottedout... Thus made atonement for the dead that they might be free fromsin.”
