TOBACCO USE IS STILL THE N0. 1 CAUSE OF PREVENTABLE DEATH IN THE UNITED STATES... There are approximately 600 ingredients in cigarettes. When burned, they create more than 7,000 chemicals. At least 69 of these chemicals are known to cause cancer, and many are poisonous.

Many of these chemicals also are found in consumer products, but these products have warning labels. While the public is warned about the danger of the poisons in these products, there is no such warning for the toxins in tobacco smoke.

While e-cigarettes do not contain smoke, they do expose others to secondhand emissions. Thank you Asia for submitting this work of art. Please read our next student’s (Kobe Iglesia) submission

that gives meaning to “Courage Alone is Invincible!” - Warrior Athlete

Thank you to Steven Rodger for a well-rounded presentation on the safety, regulations, and most importantly for expanding our students’ horizons as to the level they can take their interest. Steven has a private marketing business and a B.S. Environmental Science & Physical Geography, UC Santa Barbara MBA, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He humbly shared some of his breathtaking work with students and staff. INSPIRATIONAL

GIS Early College Class (Ms. Steiner & Ms. Wilczewski)

Early College is an initiative that allows high school students to take college classes on their high school campus. Students who successfully complete the college class receive both high school and college credit.

This past January 14 students enrolled in Kauai Community College's Early College class called GIS, Mapping and Society. GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems and it allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize our world in ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends. This STEM-based class allows students to develop high-demand skills and offer opportunities to use GPS, drone imagery and data analysis programs.

For more information on the Early College Program, here at Kapaa High School contact [email protected]

For more information about the GIS program, go to kauai.hawaii.edu/gis or contact the KCC instructor, Annika Wilczewski: [email protected]

KAPA’A HIGH PCNC CONNECTION MARCH 2018 | Issue # 3 3

Hi! My name is Kobe Iglesia! I attend Kapa’a High school and I am a Special Olympic athlete and a member of our Unified warriors club. I moved to Hawaii in 2012 from Alaska. I did not have any friends growing up, and when I lived in Alaska I wasn’t allowed to participate with my peers in any sports or school activities. When I first attended Kapa’a High I was scared to be in a new school and it did not help that I was very shy and would not talk to anyone new. Since I would not talk to people in school my peers pretty much left me alone. I also use to get so frustrated at school that I would throw really childish tantrums in the hallways and people would look at me weird or the students would laugh. When I did try to talk to my peers I was so shy I would stutter a lot. I hated coming to school and did not want to participate in anything. During the first 2 years at Kapa’a high I saw that my peers in my Special Education classroom would participate in Special Olympics sports and they would do a lot of fun activities with our regular highschool students at the school who did not have any disabilities. Every time my teacher would ask me if I wanted to join and participate with Unified Sports I shook my head NO!

Since I have joined the Unified warriors Club and participate in Special Olympics I have had many great opportunities come my way! This year I have been selected to attend and compete at National games in Seattle this summer in July 2018 as well as my Coach Ms Carvalho was chosen to be the state of Hawaii Head track coach. I was selected to participate in track & field and will be representing team Hawaii! I also got to attend Indianapolis for a sports messenger training and I am representing the State of Hawaii health messenger! Since attending Kapa’a High school, I have had many great opportunities and experiences that I would have never had anywhere else! https://www.firstgiving.com/SpecialOlympicsHawaii/huio-hawaii-808-warriors-2018-usa-games-fund

My teacher Ms. Carvalho would run once a month fun Unified club activities in the classroom where I would sit by myself in a corner of the room. I would listen and sometimes peek at the athletes and unified partners and I wanted to be a part of the activities but was too afraid to speak up. Then one day one of the unified partners Samantha came up to me and started to talk to me and had me join in with a building activity, little did she know I love Legos. After that, the other Unified partners started hanging out and talking with me and trying to get me to join Special Olympics and play unified sports with them. They made me feel important, included, and they accepted me just the way I was. I started to want to come to school, I felt that I could have friends and that maybe I was not so different. I finally joined Special Olympics in 2015 and I have been doing it for almost 3 years. I participate in Unified bowling and Unified Track and Field. At school now when I walk around campus people actually know me, they know my name, they speak to me and I feel included in my classes. Unified sports and our Unified club at Kapa’a high have given me the confidence to try new things! My family says this is the best thing that has ever happened to me, being a part of Special Olympics and Unified sports! I feel safe, welcomed, respected, and included by my peers and school! I am not bullied anymore or made fun of. I use to walk to class with my head down, now I walk with my head held high! Playing Unified sports has changed the way my peers look at us at school, and now they realize we have more ways we are alike than different!
