Introduction Herbal formulations, suffer from a range of shortcomings which includes insufficient and
unacceptable evidences of safety, efficacy, standardization, manufacturing malpractice and
contamination, difficulty in randomized clinical trials. Therefore, to utilize the potentiality of
traditional medicines & their commercial value, research needs to be simultaneously conducted on
important aspects of this discipline. Moreover, neutraceuticals and cosmeticuticals are two important
terminology used in recent years where the use of traditional herbs and medicines have gained
significant importance. But, here also they are marred by the shortcomings and bottlenecks as
discussed above.
Objectives and importance of the Event
The two week staff development programme designed to Develop an understanding amongst the new
faculty members about the importance of systematic scientific study of indigenous medicinal
practices, discuss the methods of standardization techniques required to make the traditional
medicines globally acceptable Initiate an interaction with traditional practitioners & get knowledge of
herbal formulations that are being used for centuries in the ethnic medicines, make the new
generation of pharmacists aware with the standard procedures required for documentation,
identification and authentication of medicinal plants growing in different regions. Invite the experts
from academics as well as Industry field who will impart their knowledge and experience so that
more young scientists are attracted to this field of herbal drug development.
Execution of Programme
With the above objective in mind, Columbia Institute of Pharmacy, Raipur had applied to All India
Council for Technical Education, New Delhi (AICTE) under Seminar Grant in Dec 2011. The
Council approved the programme and sent an offer letter with a sanction of Rs. 6, 50,000/-(Six Lakhs
and Fifty thousand only), vide their letter no. RIFD/SDP/97/2011-12, dt. 13/01/12, and subsequently
Rs. 3, 25,000/-(three Lakhs and twenty five thousand only), was received at the institute on
22/03/2012. The Seminar details in the form of Brochure (Annexure I) along with request for the
registration were sent in the third week of January 2012 to various Pharmacy Colleges throughout the
country. The Institute received an overwhelming response from the applicants of delegates from
Madhya Pradesh, Rajsthan, West Bengal, and Maharashtra. Delegate Kit was distributed to all the
registered delegates.

Boarding and Lodging arrangements for the Delegates
All the outstation participants were accommodated in different Hotels. Breakfast and Lunch was
arranged for all the Guests, Resource Persons, Staffs and Delegates at the Venue, Columbia Institute
of Pharmacy, Raipur. Dinner for resource persons and outstation delegates was arranged at their
respective Hotels, while local delegates were provided allowance for dinner & transport facility from
Durg, Bhilai and other places from Raipur.
Inaugural Session 6th May 2012 11:00 am – 1:00 pm
The Chief Guest of seminar Mr. K. Subramaniam, Commissioner Food & Drug Administration,
Chief Controller Drug & Secretary to Chief Minister Chattisgarh, inaugurated the function. In his
speech Hon’ble Chief Guest, said that a teacher is creature of society by his teaching methodology,
Research Work & other social reforming activities. He emphasized that a teacher should follow the
“Learn, Unlearn & Relearn” process for effective teaching. The Guest of Honor Prof. Shailendra
Saraf, said that one should be of the opinion of appraising the achievement of other, whether it is
right or wrong, this helps in knowing the deficiencies & upgrading the same. Dr. (Mrs.) Swarnalata
Saraf present as the Special Guest said that the work on standardization & documentation of herbal
formulations (Classic Indian) should be taken on priority basis for the benefit of humankind for
which such programmes should be organized time to time. Mr. Kishore Jadwani, Chief Patron and
Chairman, JanPragati Education Society, Raipur stressed on the need of extraction of necessary
infrastructures available in the state. He was all praise for AICTE for encouraging the institutions to
organize such programme for budding pharmacists. Prof. Amit Roy, Convener, briefly discussed on
the need & background. He further stated that Herbal formulations, suffer from a range of

field of herbal drug development. Mr. Harjeet Singh Hura, Patron and Secretary, JanPragati
Education Society, Raipur was also present on the dais. He concluded the session with vote of thanks.

Scientific Session
Various lectures and workshops were conducted during the programme. Eminent speakers from all
across the country were invited to talk on their expertise. Programme Schedule and Photographs of

Valedictory Session 17th May 2012 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Valedictory Session was conducted on 17th May 2012. Prof. Mukund M. Hambarde, Director
General, Chhattisgarh Council of Science & Technology, Raipur, graced the session as Chief Guest.
In his speech he said that Staff Development Programme provides you the base for updating your
knowledge, the skill, the new process of teaching & learning for the benefit of students & self. He
also added that the traditional medicines being used in the tribal area are in a state of raw material
which needs to be developed, Evaluated & Standardized to make the same an effective one.
Dr. Rajiv K. Rai, Group Leader, Research & Development, Dabur India Ltd., Gaziabad, present as
the guest of honor, emphasized on the traditional/ Classical Indian formulation, their utility &
importance of standardization. He also briefly discussed regarding formulation, standardization from
raw material to finished Ayurvedic Products. Apart from that he also emphasized about the different
quality control test that is mandatory for Ayurvedic dosage forms.
Prof. Amit Roy Coordinator of Staff Development Programme briefly discussed about the various
topics discussed related to the theme of Staff Development Programme, in which renowned &

eminent speakers from renowned Universities, Pharmaceutical Industry & other autonomous body
were present , all of them have been praised for their valuable guidance which will definitely help the
teachers participated as well as the students. He specially thanked Mr. Khemkaran Ahirwar & Mr.
Sanjib Bahadur, Asst. Profs. & Mr. Apurba Mukherjee, Training & Placement Officer of the
Institution for invaluable & selfless efforts for making this programme a grand success.
In the beginning of Valedictory Function Mr. Kishore Jadwani, Chairman, Janpragati Education
thanked AICTE for allotting such programme time to time for the enhancement in teaching learning
method.
At last Mr. Harjeet Singh Hura thanked all the participants present for making this SDP & success; he
specially thanked AICTE, New Delhi for giving Columbia Institute of Pharmacy, Raipur an
opportunity to hold such prograame. He further expressed his gratitude towards the media for their
valuable support during this programme.
