Over the course of a few months since my induction as PNAA President, I have had the privilege of traveling to the various parts of our country. Begin-ning in July, I went to Northern California, then to Greater St. Louis, back to the west coast and then back to New York. I spent most weekends during the summer months traveling to acquaint myself with PNAA members. The re-gional Vice Presidents have been immensely helpful in setting the tone for my theme Engagement and Making a Difference.

During my meetings with the various chapters, I was warmly greeted with the traditional Filipino hospitality. PNAA members engaged me in their success stories and how they are giving back to their communities and their col-leagues such as having health fairs, providing medical and financial assis-tance in need, providing educational programs, collaborating with other or-ganizations and mentoring programs. The PNAA member is truly engaged. I found that each chapter is unique in their own way by addressing the specific needs of their constituents. Recognition of the contributions of their mem-bers and community leaders was a constant theme through my travels. I have learned much from interactions with you.

I expect that as I continue to travel and meet with you in the coming months, that you will share with me your stories of engagement and how you are mak-ing a difference.

Thank you for your continued support. Engage and Make a Difference.

By: Beth Rosas, RN Once again PNA Greater St. Louis under the leadership of their Immediate Past President, Rosa Williams, RN and the Executive Board orchestrated a very successful dinner dance on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the Sheraton Westport Chalet Hotel in St. Louis, MO. The 11th Gala and Induction Ball was well at-tended by members of the community, out of town families and friends and key officers of many organiza-tions with whom the Association collaborates. The evening began with the introduction and recognition of the accomplishments of the Incoming Presi-dent Jonel Maminta by her CNO of Des Peres Hospital, where she has served for over 27 years. A special Presidential Award was also given to Outgoing President Rosa Williams and a Nurse Excellence award in Community Service was given to Jen Jen Hazelbaker. The band, the food and the camaraderie of all atten-dees made that night another PNAA affair to remember. PNAA President Rey Rivera inducted the new ex-ecutive board and spoke about his presidential theme on Engagement and Making a Difference. My special thanks to Doy Campos for serving as the special guest guide for President Rivera and to all past presidents of PNA GSTL who were present Lourdes Calabio, Jean Reyes, Rosalie Lim, Tessie Cusi, Cherie Nievera, Doy Campos, Ramona Tabeta and Emy Tabayoyong. What a Team!! All but one was pre-sent except Lily Cayabyab who was out of town. I would like to give a special recognition and appreciation to our new PNAA President Rey Rivera who came to our event to meet with the officers and members of PNA Greater St. Louis. He literally put in a 25-hour day that Friday and Saturday by having gained an extra hour because of the time difference. Nonetheless, he survived this very hectic weekend and heat wave in the Midwest. Rey Rivera is to be commended for his time and for the mini late sessions of strategic planning.

By: Beth Rose, RN The induction of the executive board dinner started with a question and answer forum with President Rey Rivera and PNAA VP of the Western Region, Beth Rose. The meeting was productive. The theme for Grace Senger’s presidency mirrors that of PNAA President, Dr. Rey Rivera: Engage and Make a Difference. In her acceptance speech, she challenged the PNACO members to rise to the top of the engagement pyramid, which is Leading (Level 6 of the Engagement Pyramid). Grace Senger stated, "When we immerse our-selves in the mission of our association, we achieve the goals we set as a group, both individually and col-lectively." Thank you very much Edith Pasion, Founding President, for your vision in organizing this chap-ter and for your steadfast leadership and commitment to PNACO as you guide the next administration. May this event marked another beginning of an opportunity to making a difference and become more en-gaged to keep PNACO and PNAA shine. Congratulations and Best wishes to Grace Senger and Marjolyn Mati-Ong and the 2010-2012 PNACO Ex-ecutive Board and the PNACO family on your 4th Year Anniversary. By: Gloria Beriones, RN The 4th Biennial induction was held at the UNF University Center Ballroom on Sept. 4, 2010. PNANEF was founded in 2004 and during that time it has been a crusader to uphold the positive image of nursing, pro-mote professional excellence and contribute to significant outcomes to healthcare and society. As a chap-ter organization, it has not only established linkages with other organization, but it has been recognized for its community service and educational and research initiatives. It was indeed a very successful event attended by 200 friends, colleagues and family members who strongly believe that the Filipino-American Nurses in Jacksonville, Florida are making an impact to the health care delivery system and the communities. The South Central Regional friends and colleagues thanked Romy De Vera, Immediate Past PNANEF President and the Executive Board 2008-2010 for their dedication and phenomenal contributions to the mission and goals of PNANEF. Dr. Rey Rivera, PNAA President was the inducting officer and the event was well attended by the South Central Presidents and colleagues, Region Vice President Gloria Lamela Beriones, VP 2010-2012 and Merlita Velasquez, VP 2008-2010. Germina Emily Risos-Rio President developed a mantra and together with the Executive Board will exe-cute the 2010-2012 theme of "A. I. M. - Aspire, Inspire and Make a Difference ". She stated that with the transformation of the healthcare system, there will be important opportunities and challenges to be faced in the next few years. As her term begins, her strategies will in-clude the formation of priority-focus groups: 1) practice and leader-ship; 2) membership; 3) community out-reach programs and collaboration with other organizations and 4) fundraising, scholarships and grants.

PHOTOS Working Behind the Scenes By: Davy G. Diongson, RN Planning and implementing a memorable event such as the induction and member recognition gala is challenging. It requires months of preparation. In planning a successful event, the chapter assigns key members to oversee registration, venue selection, entertainment, invitations, guest list, etc. There is an art to negotiating with venue operators on event spaces for the right price. Contracts must be signed. Details must be precise to avoid costs from rising when the bill comes due at the end of event. Chapter members work very hard to have a successful event. The event planning team and their cadre of volun-teers are to be congratulated for their dedication. Their quiet and diligent work behind the scenes en-sured that everyone in attendance had a great time. For the next PNA-sponsored event, remember this group of chapter members and volunteers who helped in the preparation.

Call for Manuscript Dear Colleagues:

We are writing to invite you to contribute to a PNAA Anthology Book entitled Engage and Make a Difference: How Filipino Nurses Are Making a Difference?

This book will profile the local, national, and international work of Filipino nurses who go above and beyond their work environments to give, nurture and mentor others. It is envisioned as a celebratory book for annotating our contributions to the society we live in and a legacy for all of us, individually and collectively.

Manuscripts focusing on compelling stories will be considered on the following topics:

Historical accounts of making an impact on one’s community and the world-at-large;

Response to natural disasters locally, nationally, and internationally;

Contribution to public health issues;

Impact made on the world of nursing education;

Personal philanthropy that helped change the world;

Impact on national and international health issues through entrepreneurship;

Innovative approaches to make the world a better place for all; and

Other topics of how Filipino nurses are engaged and making a difference. Should you accept the invitation to become a contributing author; the manuscript should be no more than 10 double-spaced pages, with one-inch margins, using a 12-point Times New Roman font. Authors may email their manuscripts to Dr. Reynaldo R. Rivera, PNAA President at [email protected]. All manuscripts are being received subject to review and acceptance by the editorial board. We are under a tight time frame and will need to receive your completed manuscript by January 30, 2011. Thank you very much for your interest and participation in this project. If you are unable to participate as a contributing author, please recommend any other individual or author who might have a compelling story to tell. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or need additional information. You may also reach Dr. Reynaldo R. Rivera at (212) 746-4416. Please indicate your interest by return email to Reynaldo Rivera by December 15, 2010.
