Introduction

We will present RIEGL RiCOPTER with VUX-SYS, a fully integrated solution for professional UAV-

based Laser Scanning for numerous applications.

The lightweight miniature LiDAR sensor RIEGL VUX-1 UAV was first introduced in 2014 by RIEGL

and has ever since been met with much interest and enthusiasm by the surveying community. Thescanning performance of the lidar instrument, in combination with the specific perspectives enabled

by the UAV provides attractive results for otherwise inaccessible areas and an unrivaled depth of

information for complex environments, based on features like multi-target capability and waveform

processing. While due to payload limitations, many UAVs with a MTOM of less than 25kg (a critical

weight threshold in most regulatory frameworks for commercial UAV operation) carry cameras to

generate photographic images to get DSM through photogrammetry, the advantage of the LiDAR

technology is its capability to penetrate vegetation and therefore provide at the same time

information for real DTM.

We explain the system components that complement the VUX-1 in a turnkey system set-up and the

integration into the high-performance electrically powered octocopter RiCOPTER, a UAV that hasbeen especially designed to serve as a flexible and reliable sensor carrying platform for the VUX-SYS

and an additional – optional – camera system.

Examples from contexts such as powerline mapping, open pit survey, forest inventory and public

infrastructure monitoring shall highlight the particular advantages of employing UAV based Lidar

(ULS) in these and many other surveying applications. Data quality and efficiency of data acquisition

are analyzed in comparison with other acquisition methods, for example ground based surveying, or

other technologies, as for example photogrammetric surveying.
