from the experience of other users who have deployed Oracle Exadata DatabaseMachine for their missioncritical applications. Customer machines are also identical tothe machines used by Oracle Support for problem identification and resolution and byOracle Engineering for database development.
Oracle Exadata Database Machine runs standard Oracle Database. Any applications thatrun with Oracle Database can be seamlessly migrated to Oracle Exadata DatabaseMachine with no changes to the application.
Oracle Exadata Database Machine uses a scaleout architecture for both databaseservers and storage servers. As Oracle Exadata Database Machine grows, moredatabase CPUs, storage and networking are added in a balanced fashion, ensuringscalability without bottlenecks. The following Oracle Exadata Database Machineconfigurations are available:
Oracle Exadata Database Machine Full RackOracle Exadata Database Machine Half RackOracle Exadata Database Machine Quarter RackOracle Exadata Database Machine Eighth Rack
In addition to upgrading within a rack, multiple racks can be connected using theintegrated InfiniBand fabric to form larger configurations. For example, a systemcomposed of four Oracle Exadata Full Racks is four times as powerful as a single racksystem. The four racks provide quadruple the I/O throughput, storage capacity andprocessors. It can be configured as a large single system or logically partitioned forconsolidation of multiple databases. Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) candynamically add more processing power, and Oracle Automatic Storage Management(Oracle ASM) can dynamically add more storage.
Compressing data can provide a dramatic reduction in the storage consumed for largedatabases. Exadata Storage Server provides a very advanced compression capabilitycalled Hybrid Columnar Compression. Hybrid Columnar Compression enables the highestlevels of data compression and provides tremendous cost savings and performanceimprovements due to reduced I/O. On conventional systems, enabling high datacompression has the drawback of reducing performance. Oracle Exadata DatabaseMachine is able to offload decompression overhead into a large number of processors inExadata Storage Servers so most workloads run faster using Hybrid ColumnarCompression than they do without it. Hybrid Columnar Compression combines thecompression and analytic performance benefits of column storage while avoiding thedramatic slowdown that pure columnar stores experience for drilldown operations.
When larger storage capacity is required Oracle Exadata Storage Expansion Rack isavailable. Oracle Exadata Storage Expansion Rack enables growth of storage capacityand bandwidth for any Oracle Exadata Database Machine. It is designed for databasedeployments that require very large amounts of data including historical or archivaldata, backups, documents, images, XML, large objects (LOBs), and so on. OracleExadata Storage Expansion Rack is available in full rack, half rack, and quarter racksizes that connect to Oracle Exadata Database Machine using the integrated InfiniBandfabric. Configuration does not require set up of logical unit numbers (LUNs) or mountpoints. Storage is configured and added to the database online using a command lineinterface.
The Oracle Exadata Database Machine architecture not only provides high performanceand scalability but also a unique technology that offloads dataintensive SQL operations

to Exadata Storage Servers. Moving the SQL processing to Exadata Storage Serversenables data filtering and processing to occur immediately and in parallel across allstorage servers as data is read from disk. Exadata storage offload reduces databaseserver CPU consumption and greatly reduces the amount of data moved between thestorage and database servers.
Oracle Exadata Database Machine uses the latest PCIe flash technology rather thanflash disks. PCIe flash greatly accelerates performance by placing flash directly on thehigh speed PCIe bus rather than behind slow disk controllers and directors. EachExadata Storage Server includes four PCIe flash cards with a total capacity of 3.2 TB offlash memory. Oracle Exadata Database Machine Full Rack includes 56 PCIe flash cardsproviding 44.8 TB of flash memory.
Exadata Smart Flash Cache automatically caches frequently accessed data in PCIe flashwhile keeping infrequently accessed data on disk drives. This provides the performanceof flash with the capacity and cost of disk. Exadata Smart Flash Cache understandsdatabase workloads and when to avoid caching data that will never be reused or fit inthe cache. Oracle Database and Oracle Exadata Storage Server Software allow the userto provide directives at the database table, index and segment level to ensure thatspecific data is retained in flash. Tables can be retained in flash without the need tomove the table to different tablespaces, files or LUNs as would have to be done withtraditional storage and flash disks.
Note:Oracle Exadata Database Machine does not include any Oraclesoftware licenses. Appropriate licensing of the following software isrequired when Oracle Exadata Database Machine is used as adatabase server:

In addition, Oracle recommends that the following software islicensed:

memory to 288 GB (18 x 16 GB).
The memory expansion kit is primarily for consolidationworkloads where many databases are run on each databaseserver. In this scenario, the CPU usage is often low while thememory usage is very high.
However, there is a downside to populating all the memoryslots as the frequency of the memory DIMMs drop to 800 MHzfrom 1333 MHz. The performance effect of the slower memoryappears as increased CPU utilization. The average measuredincrease in CPU utilization is typically between 5% and 10%.The increase varies greatly by workload. In test workloads, several workloads had almost zero increase, while oneworkload had as high as a 20% increase.

Oracle Exadata Rack Restrictions
The following restrictions apply to hardware and software modifications to OracleExadata Rack. Violating these restrictions can result in loss of warranty and support.
Oracle Exadata Rack hardware cannot be modified or customized. There are twoexceptions to this. The allowed hardware modifications to Oracle ExadataDatabase Machine are as follows:
Modification to the administrative 48port Cisco Gigabit Ethernet switchincluded with Oracle Exadata Database Machine. Customers may choose todo the following:
Replace the Gigabit Ethernet switch, at their own expense, with anequivalent 1U 48port Gigabit Ethernet switch that conforms to theirinternal data center network standards. This replacement must beperformed by the customer, at their expense and labor, after deliveryof Oracle Exadata Database Machine. If the customer chooses tomake this change, then Oracle cannot make or assist with thischange given the numerous possible scenarios involved, and it is notincluded as part of the standard installation. The customer mustsupply the replacement hardware, and make or arrange for this

change through other means.
Remove the CAT5 cables connected to the Cisco Ethernet switch, and connect them to the customer's network through an externalswitch or patch panel. The customer must perform these changes attheir expense and labor. In this case, the Cisco Ethernet switch in therack can be turned off and disconnected to the data center network.
Addition of client access network switches in Oracle Exadata DatabaseMachine X42 and Oracle Exadata Database Machine X32. The followingrestrictions apply for the network switches:
A maximum of two client access network switches may be installed inthe rack.
The switch must be 1 rack unit (RU) in height.
Air flow must go from the front of the rack to the back of the rack.
The switch must be installed in rack slot U41 or U42.
Power consumption must be less than 400 watts for each switch.
Power over Ethernet (PoE) functionality, if applicable, should be notbe used on these switches.
Note:Client access switches cannot be installed in OracleExadata Database Machine X48 Full Rack, Oracle ExadataDatabase Machine X38 Full Racks, or in earlier systemssuch as Oracle Exadata Database Machine X22 or OracleExadata Database Machine X28 Full Rack.
Oracle Exadata Storage Expansion Rack can only be connected to Oracle ExadataDatabase Machine or Oracle SuperCluster, and only supports databases runningon the database servers on Oracle Exadata Database Machine or OracleSuperCluster.
Standalone Exadata Storage Servers can only be connected to Oracle ExadataDatabase Machine or Oracle SuperCluster, and only support databases running onthe database servers of Oracle Exadata Database Machine or OracleSuperCluster.

Customers may load additional software on the database servers. However, toensure best performance, Oracle discourages adding software except for agents, such as backup agents and security monitoring agents, on the database servers.
Loading nonstandard kernel modules on the operating system of the databaseservers is allowed but discouraged. Oracle will not support questions or issueswith the nonstandard modules. If a server crashes, and Oracle suspects thecrash may have been caused by a nonstandard module, then Oracle support mayrefer the customer to the vendor of the nonstandard module or ask that theissue be reproduced without the nonstandard module. Modifying the databaseserver operating system other than by applying official patches and upgrades isnot supported. InfiniBandrelated packages should always be maintained at theofficially supported release.
Customers can install Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control ManagementAgents or Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control Management Agents on thedatabase servers to monitor the system. Customers may not install OracleEnterprise Manager Ops Center agents to monitor the system.

Customers cannot connect USB devices to the Exadata Storage Servers except asdocumented in Oracle Exadata Storage Server Software User's Guide and thisguide. In those documented situations, the USB device should not draw morethan 100 mA of power.
The network ports on the database servers can be used to connect to externalnonExadata Storage Servers using iSCSI or NFS. However, the Fibre Channelover Ethernet (FCoE) protocol is not supported.
Only switches specified for use in Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, Oracle Big DataAppliance, and Oracle SuperCluster may be connected to the Oracle Exadata RackInfiniBand network. It is not supported to connect other InfiniBand switches, including thirdparty switches, to the Oracle Exadata Rack InfiniBand network.Only the InfiniBand networking topologies specified in Oracle Exadata DatabaseMachine System Overview are supported, and any other InfiniBand networktopology is not supported.
Customers may connect external servers, that are not part of Oracle EngineeredSystems, to the InfiniBand switches in Oracle Exadata Database Machine. However, it is the customer's responsibility to upgrade and maintain thecompatibility of the InfiniBand software of the external servers with the InfiniBandsoftware release for Oracle Exadata Database Machine.
