Intro: 1-ingredient Ice CreamThis ice cream recipe is almost too good to be believed - so rich, creamy and luscious, you'd never know it's fat-free, dairy-free, and with no added sugar orpreservatives, is even good for you!

It only takes one ingredient to make this dreamy dessert - can you guess what i t is?? (without looking at the next step)

You may argue that without dairy, this has no place being called "ice cream." But I challenge you to try this recipe, and tell me it doesn't taste EXACTLY like ice creamPrepare to be amazed.

Thanks to everyone who pointed out the link tothekitchn'sgreat post on this time-honored recipe!

Step 1:IngredientsDid you guess our secret ingredient?

    BANANAS!

I find bananas that have turned brown work best for this. You may already peel and freeze your bananas for smoothies or breads or dipping in chocolate. Now you canuse them to make this luscious ice cream in no time at all!

Step 2:Blend to PerfectionAt first, the bananas resist the blending.

    Don't panic.

Chop them up a few at a time, adding more bit by bit. They'll reach that nice chunky stage that you can use in smoothies. But you're not done yet! Keep that blenderrunning for another 3-4 minutes, and watch in amazement as what you once saw as frozen bananas turn into a rich, creamy, silky blend.

    AMAZED!!!

Step 3:Enjoy!For the first go-round, try this recipe as-is.

Thereafter, feel free to consider this a blank canvas for all of your ice cream dreams.

Try adding honey, chocolate syrup, maple syrup, peanut butter, flavored extracts, or additional frozen fruits! Go to town, and make sure you share your favorite remixethe comments!

kitchouha says: Oct 18, 2009. 8:37 AM REPHi! I tried to add a little bit of cold water in the blender before blending the frozen bananas (To lower the viscosity) and it's a loooooooooot faster to turn thebananas into the creamy thing. Taste and consistency hadn't change.

    Hope this will help!

eulaliaaaa! says: Jan 8, 2010. 12:17 PM REPI made some of this and it is AMAZING! It tastes just like ice cream. I made a cup in under two minutes (I already had some frozen bananas.)! If you addsome chocolate syrup it tastes just like chocolate ice cream. It is also good for you!

snorlaxjen says: Mar 16, 2011. 3:02 PM REPjust made this with a hand blender- not so easy, will have to try a full blender next time - but it was nice! didn't look like the pic not as white - and went a bitgloopy like a thick smoothie - wonder if could make it and refreeze and then just able to scoop out like ice cream?

dawnesq says: Mar 14, 2011. 11:00 PM REPAwesome! I'm just getting in to raw food for health reasons, so keep posting great recipes and I'll be well on my way :D

barblorraine says: Mar 14, 2011. 3:07 PM REPi added some peanut butter and it was also very tasty.

andross says: Mar 6, 2011. 9:14 AM REPYou can also make the same thing with Avocado, sounds gross, but it's good.

BellLink says: Mar 14, 2011. 12:48 PM REPthat sounds really gross, does it really work?

earth_cruiser says: Mar 13, 2011. 11:44 AM REPVery good! I like to make Avocado Pudding too. Cashews are another good substitute for milk. Juliano Brotman has a great recipe for Cashew Gelato.

gwrober says: Mar 6, 2011. 12:26 PM REPA friend's mom did this when I was a kid - I think she added a touch of milk and/or sugar to sweeten it, but it was GOOD!

IamTheMomo says: Mar 13, 2011. 4:03 PM REPBanana powder saved my oldest child's life. He was allergic to breast milk, any animal milk, soy, and every other kind of formula. A pharmaceutical rep gavme some then-brand new Probana formula and it worked. He gained weight like a real boy! That was 48 years ago.

I made banana pops when my kids were little - frozen banana halves dipped in melted chocolate and crushed pecans and on a pop stick. We all loved themand I'm going to make this banana "ice cream" when my grandson comes to visit this summer! (Actually, I'm going to make it as soon as those bananas Ibought today ripen a bit. I may add a little sweetner and vanilla, too. The hubs is diabetic, and he'll love to have a new treat!)

luvasu says: Mar 7, 2011. 8:42 AM REPFirst - Banana is a seed. Not a fruit or a plant.Second - It's the main source for potasium to human beings.

Third-has vegetable protein. Healthier than meat protein.Fourth - there is no inconvinient on eating bananas, nor by food ideas, not by religion ideas, neither by anti-fat meals.

REMEMBER: TO EAT IN EXCESS IS BAD for your body, no matter which food you eat.

Instead of banana, if you have the chance, use papaya; it's more creamy and the result is "thicker" (you can plant in it a spoon and it holds). That means yocan add something liquid as syrups or wheatever your imagination can think on.

I LIKE THIS HEALTHY IDEAS - KEEP ON!

spark master says: Mar 9, 2011. 8:22 AM REPbananas are a ripened ovum like a tomato, even better like a berry. humanity has basically cloned banana so much there are very few banana with a reseed in it. Look at all the little dots in the center of the seed, think cucumber, that is what it would have been say 10,000 years ago. The world faces anactual crisis since lack of ability to cross breed has led to serious problems with molds and fungal infection in the plants. There were 5 real leaders in thfield and 4 went down on a plane over central America several years ago. This sounds like a real, "who cares scenario" except, they are both a cash crand a real intense part of the diets of a large portion of humanity. For the rest of us they are simply wonderful weather you make fakecream , or eat the

on/in stuff or actually make real banana icecream.

    see this story

    http://www.popsci.com/scitech/article/2008-06/can-fruit-be-saved

I read about it in NY Times and on some PBS stations at the time the plane went down , but as we all like banana's, this is quite distressingso

Savor every banana as if it were your last. And if you must squish them do it quickly so they die painlessly, (chuckle).

    enjoy

    sparkie

wreagle96 says: Mar 7, 2011. 11:49 AM REPFirst - bananas contain the seeds, much like an apple, they are just hard to see in commercially developed bananas - so in this way it is a fruit. Anargument can be made that the banana plant is a herb also - but the banana is a seed? nope.

Second - I think you will find that bananas are not close to being the main source of potassium in most human diets. potatoes, meat, green leafy veggiemilk, cheese are all significant sources of potassium - most have higher amounts than bananas do - and are consumed in greater quantity thanbananas..

this might even taste good, its just NOT ICE CREAM. add 1/2 cup heavey cream and two tablespoons confectioners sugar (better is fine granulated tablesugar, but you need to dissolve it first in teensie bit of water), then do your fruit mashie thing it might be edible(for me).

Dessert if not diet food, it is not always healthy (if you are well fed, cuz if you don't eat as many fat grams and calories as a westerner, it's fine); it is meant be a really nice treat.

maybe episode 6 or 10 Hysterical, when his mom tries to become healthy , at thanksgiving).

I do not even care if they make it and people eat it, just DO NOT SAY "It tastes JUST LIKE" cuz it doesn't. Unless you are brain dead or never haveeaten the original, or like many people are easily hypnotiseable and relative to me, possess no sense of taste or mouth feel.

everybody is different , so enjoy they should mushy frozen banana's.

oh here is an easier way to do it, buy baby food banana in a jar. they taste great and are whipped, you do no work, except open jar and plop in aplastic one (glass jars will freeze and explode).

again I do not wish to defame th eidea, just don't call it ice cream, it ain't.

kage_no_akiri says: Mar 8, 2011. 10:28 AM REPwell! -chuckles- thank you for the complement on my ava. it took me a few hrs to figure out how to properly do the lightsaber effect. not to ment

teh searching i did to find a good pic of a blade.

personally ive never been able to make TVP taste good. its always left a highly undesirable taste in my mouth.

i totaly agree with you on teh soy milk and "tofuturky" although i will have to admit i like tofu in my miso soup along with some stir fried chickenchunks in it and some himalayan brown rice. i wish i had seen tht episode cus it sounds totally hilarious cus i *know* how his mother is.

as to your icecream comment? oh yeah....it its not ice cream....it shouldnt be called as such cus ice cream is made of milk, thus ice "cream". ifthey like mushy bananas yeah, have at it. like i said earlier, i'll take a banana, throw it in a blender with 350ml (2cps) milk, 3 eggs and a ml ofvanila. good substitute for breakfast.

lol....i kinda got sick when you talked about the baby food. i remember feeding it to my children and teh smell made me rather ill.

well....take care and have a good day

    please look at the intro--

"You may argue that without dairy, this has no place being called "ice cream." But I challenge you to try this recipe, and tell me it doesn't taste EXACTLlike ice cream! Prepare to be amazed.

    " A clear statement.

    Nice recipe though mr Spark.

PS: What was the connection between "health food stores" and this instructable again?

spark master says: Mar 8, 2011. 1:46 PM REPsorry did this years ago as a kid, does not scream ice cream, it screams frozen squashed banana, tasty , but no cigar.

And th eability of a product to pass as something else it mst have ALL the qualities, that is taste aroma and mouth feel as well as visual correctnessAll this w/o off odor or taste or wrong mouth feel.

Like toffu based ice cream (ha) this has wrong mouth feel, is not sweet enough and has no dairy, Hence it is NOT ICE CREAM

You all may like it, that does not make it correct. If you honestly think this tastes just like real ice cream, well ok, but you will never cook for me.

Foehammer358 says: Mar 8, 2011. 7:12 PM REPright, can't really answer, still shcoked by this:

freaking brutal, just saw it on live TV.

spark master says: Mar 8, 2011. 5:20 AM REPOk Ok Ok,

ice cream has CREAM in it, iced cream is a dessert that has cream and or milk and or sweetener and or other flavors, frozen custard is same, by la, with eggs (certain percentage). My beef os STOP making exaggerated claim that this is a

1 ingredient ice cream it isn't cause it can't be, no dairy. Tofutti and crap of that nature was made for vegans/veg's who really want the velvetysmooth delishiousness of iced cream dessert w/o the cow.

How did healthfood stores happen by.

this recipes ide areminded me of how I was introduced to tofuti, (yeachh)

I was at work and went out after lunch, I went to a GNC , (they hore hotties to hand out free samples in Manhattan) a gorgeous 20 year old cameover to me and tried to ply me with tofutti. I said no 3 times she finally swung her toffuti makers in my face enough to take a teaspoonful of it in a cuI had to spit i t out gross disgusting. I lost my thoughts of how wonderful she was and explained to her and her boss that when people say no and waway stop and find another victim. That taught me finally , to "Just Say No" . I had a similar experience with carrob years before and it was forgotteAll the claims of tastes like chocolate etc. it's healthy, even good for you, all a bunch of crap. Tastes like crap, same color as crap, could be recyclecrap for all I know.

I was saying I hate when people say their product which has no similarity to a real product, tastes like is a substitute for it. They are not, health foodstores do this all the time. I even shop in some since they have some raw ingrediants I use and can no where else.

seabee890 says: Mar 8, 2011. 3:16 AM REPAMAZING IDEA!!! I am in a combat zoned and if we can get bananas, i will be sure to take advantage of this idea. It will be a huge hit with the troops. I amcurious if bananas generate any alcohol when they ferment? I have heard of this with some melons but don't know if it works with bananas.(kids dont try toeat rotten fruit you may get very sick instead of just drunk.

smb1973 says: Mar 7, 2011. 7:45 AM REPIt's even easier if you run frozen bananas through a champion juicer.

thepelton says: Mar 7, 2011. 7:04 PM REPMy Jack Lalanne Juicer instructions said NOT to run bananas through it.

cwilds says: Mar 7, 2011. 5:02 PM REPI add peaches. Canned peaches work the best. My grandfather used to make this on hot summer days.

kage_no_akiri says: Mar 7, 2011. 3:00 PM REPthis looks pretty bloody good. i kinda do this sometimes but i add 3 eggs....yes i said eggs. as well as a dash of vanila and 1.5 cups of milk.

mkg says: Mar 7, 2011. 2:44 PM REPI do a similar ice cream with frozen mango slices and skimmed milk 'ice cubes', adding honey or sweetener. It's a lot less fattening than most ice creams ais a really delicious dessert.

ANDY! says: Feb 13, 2011. 7:49 PM REPI've seen this. I've found that once the ice cream starts melting, it becomes more bannaney.Call it bannana ice cream?

randall550 says: Mar 7, 2011. 9:19 AM REPbannaney? Cool word! Or maybe, bananacious.

louloubell says: Mar 7, 2011. 8:26 AM REPHello Smoochmaroo! Thanks for the recipe I'm eager to try it! Could you PLEASE answer the question about the blender/food processor...? I agree with that other poster in thatyour pic looks just like a food processor not a blender. Which do I use for best results???Thanks.

zinnia11 says: Mar 7, 2011. 7:30 AM REPI didn't see anything in the directions about using an ice cream maker (or maybe I didn't read carefully enough). Do you need one or can you just process iand freeze it?I don't own an ice cream maker anymore but I would consider buying one for this recipe, if I need to. It sounds amazing!

kaciy11 says: Mar 7, 2011. 7:28 AM REPthis. is. AMAZING.
