How do you think one can categorize or classify different types of government? Classifications of Government Participation Who can participate in the government or who can vote? Govt Structure What is the relationship between the lawmaking (legislative) branch and the law-enforcing (executive) branch? The government is conducted by the consent of the people. Can be Direct or Indirect: Direct Democracy People (citizens) meet in a central place and vote on laws directly. Also known as Pure Democracy, only found at the community level or in small societies. Slide 6 Forms of Government Democracy (continued) Representative Democracy Also known as Indirect Democracy A small group of individuals chosen by the people act as their representatives to vote on laws. People voice their approval or disapproval of the representatives on periodic elections. Slide 7 Forms of Government Democracy (continued) Republic Style of government without a monarchy (king, emperor, shah). Representatives have political power. Every Democracy is a Republic but not every Republic is a Democracy Constitutional Monarchy Monarchy is head of state but works within the parameters of a constitution. In other words the King or Queen has limited power. Usually shares the power with a legislative branch. For example: United Kingdom Slide 8 Stand up and talk to 2 other people. Discuss the difference between direct and indirect democracy & which do you think is better for the United States and why? Which do you think is better for Atholton?
