The government is conducted by the consent of the people. Can be Direct or Indirect: Direct Democracy People (citizens) meet in a central place and vote on laws directly. Also known as Pure Democracy, only found at the community level or in small societies. Slide 6 Forms of Government Democracy (continued) Representative Democracy Also known as Indirect Democracy A small group of individuals chosen by the people act as their representatives to vote on laws. People voice their approval or disapproval of the representatives on periodic elections. Slide 7 Forms of Government Democracy (continued) Republic Style of government without a monarchy (king, emperor, shah). Representatives have political power. Every Democracy is a Republic but not every Republic is a Democracy Constitutional Monarchy Monarchy is head of state but works within the parameters of a constitution. In other words the King or Queen has limited power. Usually shares the power with a legislative branch. For example: United Kingdom Slide 8 Stand up and talk to 2 other people. Discuss the difference between direct and indirect democracy & which do you think is better for the United States and why? Which do you think is better for Atholton?
