In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Camera work The use of various different camera shots and angles is evidence in my film. While doing my secondary research and my planning for Preliminary video I have come across a lot of different camera techniques that are used in horror films to direct the viewer’s eyes and to capture different scenes. I have paid a close attention to this and tried to feature these shots in my film. First of all to set the opening scene I used a panning shot to show the beginning of the cemetery to the other end this type of camera shot is popular in many slasher horror films because it helps to show the viewers where the action will take place by moving the camera horizontally to the right or left. I have also used a close up shot to show the girl running down the starts this helped the viewers see how terrified she was because of the speed her legs were moving at it also helped to show what she was wearing and made them recognise as it was a close up shot and it made it easier to see what the girl was wearing. This was important to know because I have the same shot but this time it is the killer so by using a close up shot in the first place it helped to distinguish between both

First of all to set the opening scene I used a panning shot to show the beginning of the cemetery to the other end this type of camera shot is popular in many slasher horror films because it helps to show the viewers where the action will take place by moving the camera horizontally to the right or left.I have also used a close up shot to show the girl running down the starts this helped the viewers see how terrified she was because of the speed her legs were moving at it also helped to show what she was wearing and made them recognise as it was a close up shot and it made it easier to see what the girl was wearing. This was important to know because I have the same shot but this time it is the killer so by using a close up shot in the first place it helped to distinguish between both scenes and made the character realise that she was being followed because before I showed the killers face I showed a close up shot of his shoes as he came running down the stairs and I did this because I wanted the character to get that quick realisation and to notice that she is being followed into the subway.

I have also used close up shot to show the emotions and expression on the victims face in my film. I used this shot because while doing my secondary research I found out that all horror films use a close up shot of characters to put across to the audience the way that character is feeling. So I used close up shot in this scene to show that the character is feeling relieved that she cannot see the killer behind her.

In most slasher horror films that I looked at a high angle have been used to make the characters vulnerable and powerless and in my film I have used high angle shot to make my character look powerless as she is being followed by the psychopath.

I have also used a low angle shot which is also popular in most horror films, and I have looked at this shot closely in my secondary research and found out that it is used in horror films to make the villain look powerful and intimidating and I used a high angle shot when the psychopath in my film was coming down the stairs and chasing after the girl.

Another camera work that I have used in my film is medium shot which is used a lot in slasher horror film to show when people are speaking or to show some emotions. And I have used this shot to show some of the emotions of my characters face as she comes running down the stairs. I then followed on from this shot to a close up shot to show her exact facial expressions and to make it clearer to the audience.

• Another shot that I have used in my film is also a long shot I used this shot to show the character walking away into the subway and this shot helped to capture how far the girl was into the subway. This makes the audience realise how far she is from the exit and how vulnerable she is now stuck in a dark subway with a killer. This helps to add suspense to my film and slasher horror films often use this shot to show the victim running away or walking towards a location whether it is their house or school, this shot shows the whole body of the character as they move in action.

The opening of my film involves a chase scene where the antagonist is chasing the protagonist this is often used in slasher horror films as the opening but this is usually shown as a flashback or in the opening a friend is playing a prank on the other characters which gives the audience the idea that something like this might happen in the film but it will be the real killer and the characters won’t take him serious which will result in them getting killed.

The reason why I have used a chase scene in my opening sequence is to open up with a dramatic opening where the audience are drawn in to want to find out what will happen. The reason why I used an actual chase scene instead of using a flashback is because I wanted to challenge the conventions and go for something different but I also thought it would have more of an effect on the way the audience response to my film if I started with an actual scene. I was right to use this because as I asked for a feedback on my film for the people who fell under my target audience they have all mentioned that they liked the fact that I use an actual chase scene as my opening rather than a flashback because they said that it made them care for the character more because in my film I made it clear that the chase was not a flashback so the audience were aware of this because I didn’t give any indications of it being a flashback. I straightaway started my film with a chase scene which helped to start my film with a high climax. In my film I also used over the shoulder shot which showed the antagonist running away from the protagonist and this shot is used a lot in horror films often to show the protagonist being followed to suggest that something will happen to them.

In my opening sequence I used a camera shot which showed the killers point of view of the victim, this is often used in horror openings to make the audience aware of the fact that the victim is being watched and it adds excitement and suspense to the film because it makes the audience want to find out what will happen next and I used this in my film because it is effective and it helps to tell a story as it suggests that something might happen to the protagonist as they are being watched.

In my film I focused on many ways in which I can meet the conventions that are used in the opening sequence of a horror film however in terms of editing I have challenged these conventions by filming in black and white which is hardly done in any slasher horror films however I decided to use black and white because I wanted my film to be different and unique and I didn’t want to follow and copy all the conventions used in a slasher horror films. I feel like I made the right decision because black and white casted different shadows and lighting in my film which helped to create a scary atmosphere and helped to add suspense to my film.
