7 Investigation Mode

Slide the stylus on the Touch Screento move the magnifying glass aroundon the top screen. If you find a spotwhere the magnifying glass changescolour, leave the magnifying glass onthat spot and touch the TouchScreen to investigate.

Mode to switch to InvestigationMode. In this mode, you can use themagnifying glass to examine yoursurroundings and look for clues thatmight help your investigation. Whenyou hit a spot of interest, themagnifying glass will turn orange

12 Saving / Episodes

13 Additional Trunk Features

Arrange articles your shop shelveto try to seleverything! Firstselect a shop aislin the One-StoShop menu and touch START!. Asthe shopkeeper, your job is toarrange the articles on the shelvesaccording to certain rules so that thecustomer's eye is drawn to each itemin turn. Once you've placed all theitems, touch OPEN SHOP! to seehow they sell. If the customer buysup everything, you've cleared thelevel!

The three options in the Professor'sTrunk that are initially marked with aquestion mark are minigames that willbecome available as you progressthrough the story. You will alsocollect more levels and content forthese minigames as you go along.Tou to read the instructions foreach minigame.

14 Horse Riding

The aim is to direct yogalloping horse throuthe course and to thgoal by sliding the stylon the Touch ScreenYou'll have to steecarefully: runninheadlong into a barrewill slow you down, butpicking up an energy carrot will makeyour horse speed up and smash rightthrough barrels!

Early on in this adventure, Laytonand his companions find themselvesgalloping through the streets ofMonte d'Or on horseback. Later,after talking to a certain character,they can go horse riding again andtry some new obstacle courses.

15 Ruins Exploration

In the ruins, you control youngLayton and help him solve puzzlesand find his way to the deepestlevels.

In the course of this story, a youngerHershel Layton and his friend Randallembark on a trip to explore someancient ruins, solving puzzles andovercoming obstacles along the way.The basic gameplay is different forthis section of the game, and isexplained below.

17 Downloading Puzzles

You can connect the internet andownload a nepuzzle every dafor a year after trelease oPROFESSOR LAYTON AND THEMIRACLE MASK (subject toavailability). Solve them as youwould a normal puzzle in the PuzzleIndex (p. 11).

Once the download is complete,touch OK! and your game will besaved. You can now try your hand atyour new puzzle!

♦ The first time you connect to theinternet and download puzzles, allcurrently available puzzles will bedownloaded.

Do not turn off the power or pressany buttons on your Nintendo 3DS/Nintendo 3DS XL system while thedownload is in progress. If thedownload fails, an error message willbe displayed to explain why. Youmay need to check your internetconnection and settings in theSystem Settings.

Select DAILY PUZZLES in theBonuses section, then touchDOWNLOAD.

Connect to the internet. You canconfigure your connection via theSystem Settings. For more details,please refer to the OperationsManual for your Nintendo 3DSsystem.

Downloading New Puzzles

♦ In order to download DailyPuzzles, you will need an SDCard. Do not remove the SD Cardduring download.

Deactivating SpotPass

1. Touch the PROFESSOR LAYTONAND THE MIRACLE MASK icon inthe HOME Menu, then touchOPEN.

2. Touch BONUSES on the titlescreen (available after saving yourgame once).

3. Touch the Notifications option atthe bottom of the Touch Screento activate SpotPass notifications(p. 16).

Activating SpotPass

To use SpotPass, you must first:

SpotPass is active only when thesystem is in Sleep Mode and withinrange of a compatible internetaccess point.

For information on these, refer to theOperations Manual.

- Accept the Nintendo 3DS ServiceUser Agreement and Privacy Policy

- Set up an internet connection- Insert an SD Card into the

How to Unlock theSpectre's Call

The Hidden Door option works in aunique way: to unlock bonus contenthere, you will need to enter apassword from another game in theseries. The Hidden Door containstwo options: THE SPECTRE'S CALLand THE HIDDEN DOOR.

The Top Secret section providessome extra content that will only beavailable after you have finished themain game. The more picarats youcollect, the more content you willunlock!
