General Introduction to Formulas
2
The ones with english names behind them from NCCAOM are the focus here.
Know about their functions, effect. Have to choose the correct formula.
Need to know the chief herbs.
Dosage ratios as noted in these slides.
Some special combinations, but basically q is based on function/action of Rx.
Formula families. Like the Liu Wei Di Huang Wans. What are the differences.
3
8 therapeutic methodsJust a couple of q’s on this topic.
• 1. sweating – open LU qi, harmonize ying/wei, open pores to expel pathogenic evil, enliven and relax shen (caution: protect body fluid/Qi, weak patients, bleeding patients)
• 2. vomiting – expel phlegm, food stagnation, poison from throat, chest, ST. (caution: overuse can seriously damage ST yin)
• 3. descending/draining downward – also called “draining downward,” unblock intestines, ST to expel accumulation of water, blood stagnation, food stagnation, dry stool, cold accumulation, and phlegm.Harshly quickly gets rid of pathogenic factor. Not the same as gradual descending.
• 4. harmonizing – cold/heat, SP/LV, interior/exterior• 5. warming – warm the middle, expel cold, restore yang, unblock channels, treat inter
nal cold in zang, fu, channels. (related to yang qi xu, caution: internal heat, use small dose for short term)
• 6. clearing – clear heat, drain fire (for internal heat, caution: strong herbs may damage yang qi). Know side fx – damage MJ yang qi = loose stools.
• 7. reducing – gradually resolve stagnation of Qi, xue, phlegm, food, water, parasite, in zangfu, channels, muscles. Gradual slow elim.
• 8. tonifying – zangfu (more zang than fu), Qi/xue/yin/yang (caution: too much tonics can give opposite of the desired effect).
4

• 2. deputy herb (2)– Assist/Help king to treat major syndrome– Tx 2ndary syndrome
• 3. assistant herb (3)– Help king/deputy to treat syndrome
• 4. envoy herb (2)– Has same temp as disease and guides other herbs to location of disease. Pork bile is commonly tested. Gui
de to disease location. Know some common ones. Know which guide up and guide down.
Know the basic function of each role. Be able to ID the chief.
5
• Modification
– Ingredient (never delete King herbs) – move the king, change the country/formula
– Dosage – focuses not on #g, but ratio between herbs.
– Dosage form
• Dosage Form
– Powder – fastest in action. (Tincture works fast too because of the alcohol carrier)
– Decoction – most flexible for modification.
– Pill – slowest in action.
