Lesotho — The Mountain Kingdom

“Khotso! Pula! Nala!” “Peace! Rain! Prosperity!” is the friendly greeting that welcomes you to Lesotho, which is also known as the “Mountain Kingdom”, and the home of the “Blanket People”. Lesotho is renowned for its beautiful mountains, its flowers, waterfalls, and, most of all, its friendly people. Imagine finding an expanse of shimmering water while you are hiking in the mountains. You gaze at incredible pinnacles and rocky gullies, marvelling at this timeless beauty. Flowers in abundance are nature’s living gems. Lesotho is a landlocked country, an “island state” surrounded by South Africa. Fields are found in the lowlands. The foothills feature timeless sandstone formations. High plateaus and precipitous mountains dominate the highlands. King Letsie the Third is Head of State. Land is communally owned, and held under the guardianship of the king. The people are the caretakers of the Mountain Kingdom and most Basotho live a subsistence lifestyle. There are fascinating roads to travel along, encountering villages on the way. A wealth of water from abundant rainfall creates a large number of streams cascading down the mountains in a multitude of waterfalls. South Africa might have its “Big Five”, but Lesotho has its own “Five” as well the Katse Dam, alpine flowers found nowhere else in the world, mohair, cascading waterfalls and adventure. Lesotho is a country of rich diversity. There are a wealth of paleontological finds which makes it quite unique. It has the greatest number of dinosaur footprint sites in the world. There are fantastic Bushman rock art paintings to be seen, a rich culture to be experienced and adventures

to be embarked upon. It has a wealth of water, providing “White Gold” to its neighbour, South Africa, through several tunnels and dam projects. The Lesotho Highlands Development Project currently has three dams — Katse, Mohale and a hydroelectric facility at Muela. Plans call for the construction of a fourth dam, Polihali, where the great Senqu and the Khubelu Rivers meet. An 800-megawatt hydropower plant will be built on the Bokong River drainage. The future looks bright for Lesotho, with abundant water and plentiful electricity to provide power for the villages. Lesotho also hosts the famous “Roof of Africa” rally every year, giving it international distinction among motorcycle enthusiasts. There is one national park and two nature reserves in the country. Sehlabathebe has a wealth of rare alpine flowers only to be found in the home of the majestic Maloti Mountains (also called the Maluti Mountains). Ts’ehlanyane is home to the berg bamboo, with rare butterflies to be found living there. Bokong Nature Reserve has the distinction of being the highest nature reserve in the Southern Hemisphere. The high alpine meadows are wetlands of incredible beauty where the flowers bloom throughout the summer. Beautiful sandstone caves and formations are found among the multitude of waterfalls and streams. Wild trout can be found in abundance throughout Lesotho and there is also two commercial trout farm on the Katse Dam. A rich diversity of birds can be spotted. High mountain passes and roads make Lesotho a 4x4 enthusiast’s dream as there are always more trails and riverbeds to explore. Come and explore Lesotho — the friendly people welcome you.

Attractions in Lesotho

Katse Dam

Centred in the heart of the Maloti Mountains lies Lesotho’s largest attraction, the Katse Dam, named after a much-revered man who once lived there. The massive dam wall rises to form an arch with double curves. One of the largest on the African continent, it is the holding basin and outlet for the water on which many who live in South Africa depend for their livelihoods. The great Mohale Dam holds in reserve extra supplies of the water that many call “White Gold” to be used should the levels in Katse fall too low. Tunnels carry the water to Muela where, buried deep in the mountain, a hydro-generating facility creates energy for the people of Lesotho. Leaving from Lesotho, the water goes to the Ash River outfall in South Africa where it makes its way into the Vaal River flowing to Johannesburg. Additional plans are being developed for another dam further north, at Polihali, to guarantee that the water-needs for neighbouring South Africa are met for decades to come. Enter Lesotho at Ficksburg, where a breathtaking drive up the mountains through the Bokong Nature Reserve has no equal in Southern Africa. The Katse Dam and Village has become Lesotho’s main tourist destination. The visitors’ centre hosts several dam wall tours daily. The Katse Village also has pony trekking and village tours as well as boat rides on the dam itself. It is said that the spirits of the mountains can be seen in the rainbows when the water overflows over the spillways.

Mohale Dam

The Mohale Dam is the second-largest dam in the Lesotho Highlands Development Project. Built as a backup reserve to the Katse Dam project, the two dams are connected by a tunnel that ensures there’s enough water to meet South Africa’s ever-increasing demand. At 145 m, Mohale is the highest concrete-faced rock-filled dam in Africa. An entire mountain was crushed and moved to build the rock wall. Driving in from Maseru, once again marvel at the beauty of the three mountain passes before arriving at the dam. The drive from Mohale to Katse via Thaba-Tseka is one of the finest Lesotho has to offer. Admire the reflections of the clouds as one drives around the lake on 4x4 roads. Enjoy the visitors’ centre and Mohale Village where there are dam wall tours several times a day.

Muela Hydropower Station Visitors’ Centre

Coming in from the Caledonspoort Border Post on the way to Afri Ski and Oxbow, you will find the Muela Hydropower Station. This is the tail dam of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. At Muela, in between Katse and the Ash River outlet in the Free State, water in the transfer tunnel performs an additional task. Buried deep in the mountain, it drives the three turbines of Lesotho’s main hydropower station before continuing on its journey via the delivery tunnel north, to South Africa. At 25 megawatts each, the turbines contribute substantially to Lesotho’s energy demand. The visitors’ centre hosts daily tours into the mountain where you can view how the turbines produce electricity for Lesotho. A beautiful small dam area is used to transfer the water further on its journey. Further hydropower development is planned with an 800-megawatt facility in the Bokong River area of the Katse Dam.

Bokong Nature Reserve

Situated in the heart of the Maloti Mountains, the Bokong Nature Reserve is the highest nature reserve in the Southern Hemisphere. A world-class visitors’ centre is breathtakingly perched on the edge of a 100 m cliff overlooking the magnificent Lepaqoa Valley. Breathe in the crisp, clear mountain air of the valley with its magnificent vistas below. View the spectacular Lepaqoa Waterfall which in winter freezes into a pillar of ice. Further down the Lepaqoa River portions of Katse Dam can be seen. The reserve is a hiker’s dream with a hiking camp and network of trails, with half-day and full-day walks, as well as a two-to-three-day hike along the alpine plateau, down into the Ts’ehlanyane National Park. There are two overnight huts for hikers at the waterfalls a short day-hike away, with a clean kitchenette and an ablution facility. Located at the sources of the Bokong River and Lepaqoa Stream, you will find extensive afro-alpine wetlands. Flora and fauna abound with an abundance of high alpine flowers. View the rare Bearded Vulture and catch glimpses of Mountain Rhebuck as well. Come and enjoy the beauty of the mountains, listen to the silence, breathe the fresh air or look out for the abundance of birds among the flowers on the cliffs.

Ha Lejone Trout Farm

Crossing the border at Ficksburg, Ha Lejone is located on the road to the Katse Dam. Passing through the Bokong Nature Reserve, the trout farm is on the far end of the dam project. It produces the finest trout in Africa. The trout farm is a partnership between the private sector and the local community, providing jobs for the Basotho people who live in Ha Lejone. The trout farm currently produces 200 tons of trout per year. The trout are fed a special diet specifically manufactured to keep them healthy and to prevent any harm to an environmentally sensitive area. Most of the trout is for export and is sold in South Africa. Plans are on track to double the volume of production.

Katse Botanical Gardens

At Katse we have the opportunity to visit the highest botanical gardens in the Southern Hemisphere. Here the continents of Europe and Africa are connected in a partnership to ensure that the high-growing alpine flora is preserved. The Katse Botanical Gardens were established through the environmental vision of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. Construction of the dam was imminent, so the first priority was the rescue of medicinal and other plants soon to be covered by water. 17 acres of mountain land was fenced and walkways were designed. You can see over 200 varieties of propagated plants growing on the hillsides and today this garden is flourishing. Brightly-coloured Malachite sunbirds feed on the mountain nectar, sharing this high alpine world with the Red Bishops and other birds that nest in the area. The Katse Botanical Gardens were recently presented with the “Gold Award” by the German Botanical Society. A day in the gardens is a must-see experience while visiting Katse.

Semonkong and Maletsunyane Falls

From Maseru through the mountains on a very beautiful drive on the A-5, you will find Semonkong. The Maletsunyane Falls are named after the French Catholic missionary who reported their existence in 1881. The Maletsunyane Falls are the highest single-drop waterfall in Africa, with a flow of water dropping 192 m. At 204 m, the site holds a Guinness World Record for the highest commercially-run abseil in the world. The road between Ramabanta and Semonkong is quite spectacular as you climb into the Thaba Putsoa Mountains. From Semonkong there is a road to the falls. The abseiling and pony trekking is run from Semonkong Lodge. Take time to hike in the geological formations around the falls — the valley and falls are another of Lesotho’s gems.

Qiloane Falls

The Qiloane Falls, like so many of Lesotho’s most beautiful places, is rarely seen by most tourists and it’s only a two-hour horseback ride or hike from the road. Coming from Maseru on the road to Mohale, backpackers can pony trek from the Basotho Pony Trekking Centre at Setibeng. The trail follows the Makhaleng River upstream for 5 km. As you often walk in the riverbed, caution should be exercised during the rainy season as the river quickly reaches dangerous levels. Qiloane isn’t known for its long drop but rather for the wide fan of water flowing into the pools below, much like a bridal veil pouring over the rocks.GPS co-ordinates S 29º 23’ 49.17 E 027º 54’ 44.56

Ketane Falls

Located in one of the most remote areas of Lesotho, the Ketane Falls are only accessible by foot or on horseback. Because of its location, very few people have seen the falls. The falls have an impressive drop of 122 m, falling down into the narrow geological formations leading up the valley. Ketane is one of Lesotho’s most beautiful areas and, like so many of Lesotho’s gems, is seldom seen by the tourist. They can, however, be reached from Semonkong on horseback by the more adventurous. The Ketane Falls can also be reached from Malealea, but only on horseback. Four days should be allowed for this arduous trip into the mountains. A local hut is shared by those hardy enough to venture there. GPS co-ordinates S 29º 52’ 55.73 E 027º 54’ 30.87

Maseru, the Capital City

Maseru is the capital city of Lesotho and also the capital of the Maseru District. It is situated on the Caledon River, which separates Lesotho from South Africa. It is Lesotho’s largest city, with a population of approximately 250,000. Maseru was established as a small police camp by the British when the then Basutoland became a British protectorate. Maseru was the state’s administrative capital between 1869 and 1871, before the administration of Basutoland was transferred to the Cape Colony. In 1884, Basutoland’s status as a Crown Colony was restored, and Maseru was again made the capital. Basutoland gained its independence and became the Kingdom of Lesotho in 1966. Maseru has remained the country’s capital and largest city. The name Maseru means “place of sandstone” and many historic buildings found in the district are built from sandstone. Maseru is home to the King, Prime Minister and Parliament. Currently a new palace is being constructed for the King. The embassies of numerous countries are found there as the government operates from Maseru. Most of the corporate companies that do business in Lesotho are located in Maseru, which is the business hub of Lesotho. Maseru has an international airport which handles eight flights a day to South Africa. The Pope visited Maseru in 1981 and the park in Maseru still commemorates his visit. Maseru has numerous artist and craftspeople and several weaving cooperatives are found there. The Tapestry Route starts in Maseru and then moves through Teyateyaneng before finishing in Leribe. Maseru has a pulsating, progressive vibe influenced by the numerous cultures found there.

Morija

Driving from Maseru on the A-2, you will find Morija. Easily recognizable by the numerous trees planted in the valley and on the hillsides, Morija is the site of the earliest mission station in Lesotho and is named after the Biblical Mount Moriah. The mission became a centre of learning and is well-known for its mission press and book depot. There is a museum with an invaluable archive of historic material found nowhere else in Lesotho. A short hike up the hill leads you to a set of dinosaur footprints exposed on the rocks. Morija hosts the annual Morija Arts and Cultural Festival in October. Close to Morija is Matsieng, the country residence of the King. Walk around the townfor a relaxing day in the lowlands.

Thaba-Bosiu

Thaba-Bosiu is a national monument and Lesotho’s most famous historical site. Known as the “mountain of the night” from the tradition that it grew larger at night and shrank during the day, it has become one of Lesotho’s greatest treasures. King Moshoeshoe I used the plateau on the sandstone mountain as his stronghold and as a refuge for his people during wars with the neighbouring tribes and Boers. At an elevation of nearly 120 metres above the valley below, the plateau formed a natural fortress to protect the Basotho people in times of danger. The large area at the plateau could hold enough livestock and supplies to support the people during a lengthy war.The now-abandoned remains of the King’s dwellings are preserved and there are still villages on the hillside. The Royal Cemetery of Lesotho is still honoured by the Basotho people who come to pay their respects to Moshoeshoe and his heirs. Free State Boer commander Louw Wepener was killed in an attack on Moshoeshoe I in 1865. The summit also has spectacular views of the countryside, including the Qiloane Pinnacle, which inspired the top-knot on the Basotho hat. From the visitors’ centre, tourists have an easy climb up Rafutho’s Pass where a trail leads them to the Royal Cemetery and remains of settlements.

Kome Caves25 km from Teyateyaneng at Pulane, deep in the heartland of Lesotho, lies the mysterious Kome Cave Village. A National Heritage Site, the area is rich in history and culture nurtured by the traditions of Lesotho. The inhabitants are descendants of the early ancestors who settled in the caves during the 19th century. Ha Kome has been continuously inhabited since it was originally built. The caves have been restored to preserve the tradition and history of the area. Nestled in the sandstone landscape, the sheltered dwellings are built into an overhang which has been used as a place of refuge for centuries. Chief Teleka of the Basia used the caves as a refuge from the cannibals who lived close to the nearby village of Ha ’Matjotjo. The cannibals had their own places of refuge known as Malimong and Bokhopa Mountain. The visitors’ centre at Ha Kome splendidly displays the age-old history and traditions of the San people. Traditional art, basket weaving, tribal dances and the harvesting methods of the locals still live on there for you to see today.GPS co-ordinates S 29º 14’ 38.2 E 027º 52’ 00.2

Mohair and Tapestries

Lesotho has some of the finest mohair in the world. The fine white fibre comes only from goats in the high alpine areas. Down the mountains into the valleys below, Lesotho tapestries are woven by the women in Leribe, Teyateyaneng (TY) and Maseru. The mohair is carded, combed and spun into high-quality yarn. The weavers dye and then weave the yarn into tapestries and rugs which primarily feature traditional patterns depicting the colourful life of the Mountain Kingdom. They also knit the yarn into beautiful household articles and garments such as ponchos, shawls, and waistcoats. These co-operative industries have become a part of Lesotho’s heritage as the art and culture displayed in the work represents the people and lives of the Basotho.

Sehonghong Caves

On the road from Thaba-Tseka to the Sehlabathebe National Park you will find the village of Sehonghong. As you follow the Senqu River into dramatic mountain passes, you come to the Komo Koma Bridge Causeway, which is often submerged and impassable when the Katse Dam spills over. The mountains in this area are much like the Drakensberg you would see in Sehlabathebe. As you pass Sehonghong you come to sandstone cliffs in a small river valley and, after a short hike downriver, you will reach the caves. Rivalling the Cradle of Mankind in historical significance, the skeletal remains found there date back 70,000 years and are the oldest human remains yet found in Lesotho. There are also San/Bushman paintings from a later date. Sadly, the overhang is covered in graffiti.

Mount Moorosi, Fort Hartley, Whitehill, Qacha’s Nek —

“The Grand Canyon of Lesotho”

Coming in from Tele Bridge Border crossing, driving on the A-4, you will see a marvel of geological wonders. Known as the Grand Canyon of Lesotho, the drive from Fort Hartley, Mount Moorosi to Qacha’s Nek is a wonder to behold. Legends says that Chief Moorosi’s treasure is hidden in the rock cliffs of Mount Moorosi. It is said that a Bushman was lowered down from a ledge to hide the silver in a crevice in the rock cliffs.Travelling from Telebridge, you will find Fort Hartley, named in honour of a well-known doctor, Major Hartley. Approximately 12 km from Fort Hartley is Mount Moorosi, the legendary mountain and village. Continue your journey through the beautiful rock formations to Whitehill and then on to Qacha’s Nek where you can exit Lesotho or continue on another adventure to Sehlabathebe.

Masitise — Cave House

The Masitise (Ellenberger) Cave House Museum in the vicinity of Quthing is part of an old mission house that was built into a San rock cave by the Reverend David Frederic Ellenberger in 1866. Today it functions as a small museum with some fine displays of local history and culture. Ellenberger was well-respected by the people as he took their customs and traditions seriously. Together with Casalis, Arbousset, Sekese, Jacottet, and Mangoela, he preserved much historical and cultural material which otherwise certainly would have been lost during those tumultuous timesThere is a school and a church nearby founded by the Ellenbergers when they settled in the area.On the roof of the cave you will find dinosaur footprints which are negative images of the footprints. There are some good sets of dinosaur footprints on the riverbank on the northern outskirts of Moyeni. There are also some dinosaur footprints further up the Qomoqomong Valley, though they are hard to find without a guide. The Qomoqomong Valley is also home to several San cave paintings: follow the small road east out of Moyeni towards the village of Qomoqomong (where the road ends) — the caves are in the hills to the southwest.

Leribe and Gun Tower

Entering from the border at Ficksburg, you will find Leribe. The original name for the town was Hlotse, so called after the Hlotse River. It was founded in 1876 and it became embroiled in the Gun War of 1880. Now in ruins, there is a war cemetery in the town. The old Gun Tower, which is now part of the marketplace in Leribe, was built for the Gun War of 1886. It is believed that Major Bell was responsible for getting the Gun Tower built. About 8 km north of Leribe, towards Butha-Buthe, the footprints of dinosaurs can be seen in the bed of the Subeng River. The Leribe Craft Centre offers a wide variety of mohair items woven from the hand-spun yarn for sale.

Dinosaur Footprints

Known as the area with the largest concentration of dinosaur footprints in the world, Lesotho holds a treasure trove of paleontological discoveries. This small country has the distinction of having the world’s earliest known mammalian skeletal material. Megazostrodon links the reptiles and the mammals, something which gives Lesotho worldwide fossil distinction. Many of the earliest known dinosaur fossil discoveries in Lesotho were made by missionaries’ exploration of the area. Lesothosaurus was discovered by Thulborn and, because of the complete skeletal structure, became important to fossil research as experts could then begin to categorize other fossils found into similar families of dinosaur species. There are many dinosaur footprint locations. Some can be found at Morija, Subeng Stream and Tsikoane close to Leribe, Moyeni, Matsieng and Mohale’s Hoek. Walk in the footsteps of the San people and early missionaries who made these ancient finds.

Liphofung Cave

On the main road to Butha-Buthe, Oxbow and Mokhotlong, you will find the Liphofung Cave. This cave has been used by people since prehistoric times. You will find San rock art on the walls and rich archaeological deposits of Stone Age implements on the floor. A number of geological features, both in the caves and in the surrounding area, make it a part of Lesotho’s cultural heritage. The first Basotho monarch, King Moshoeshoe the Great, used the cave as a place to stay when visiting that part of his kingdom. A tributary of the Hololo River flows through the cave which afforded him the sanctuary needed on his journeys through the area. The small visitors’ reception centre includes a display of San rock art, Basotho culture and also a curio shop, as well as ablution facilities. There is self-catering overnight accommodation in two huts. Campsites are available. There is also accommodation offered in the nearby village. Listen for the footsteps of Moshoeshoe and the ancient San people as you visit the site.

Sani Pass

The historic Sani Pass is a gravel route that connects KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho. Often closed, it is a rugged 4x4-only trip directly up the mountains. Along the way, travellers will see the remains of vehicles that couldn’t make the gradient. Only the most adventurous succeed in negotiating its steep gradients or survive the poor traction of its surface. Often closed during the rainy season, even motorcycles have been seen parked on the road unable to ascend this path over the mountains. The highest point in Southern Africa, the Thabana Ntlenyane Mountain, is a short day-hike away. The Sani Top Chalets, famous as the “highest pub” in Southern Africa, has become an international destination for 4x4 enthusiasts.

Blankets of Lesotho

Hundreds of years ago the Basotho people wore animal skins. In Africa, leopard skins were given to honour the chiefs. As time went on, animal skins started to become scarce. King Moshoeshoe the First was the first to wear a blanket which, it is thought, was given to him as gift by a French missionary. He placed the blanket around his shoulders, thus starting the tradition of wearing the blanket. Originally the Basotho traditional blankets were made in England. A special blanket was designed to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in 1897. This became known as the “Victoria England” and the label became a status symbol. The special Seanamarena designs are “Corncob” or “Poone”, which is the symbol of peace and prosperity. Soon the blankets were desired by everyone, causing queues over a kilometre-long to get one. As time wore on, the blanket became part of the culture of the Basotho people. “When I wear a blanket, it shows I am a Mosotho!”

Initiation Schools

For the Basotho people a rite of passage for most young people is the Initiation School. The initiates study for six months to a year in the mountains, learning the traditional ways of the people. Conventional schooling isn’t a priority, although some may be allowed to attend conventional schools for some of the time. The training is different for men and women. The young men craft sticks and practice the age-old art of stick fighting. They learn to care for the animals. They wear distinctive clothing which they make themselves. They learn to survive in the harsh mountain climate, living the traditional way. The young women learn the skills required to be the mothers of the nation. They learn how to use medicinal plants, and to be caretakers. Attendance at an initiation school is a requirement and considered a duty and honour for the Basotho people living in the mountains.

The Floral Kingdom

Lesotho has over 2000 species of flowers, of which 400 occur only in Lesotho — see some of the rarest flowers in the world. This floral kingdom will amaze you Lesotho falls entirely within the Grassland Biome, within which three main vegetation zones can be recognized. These are the Highland Grassland Zone, the Afro-alpine Grassland Zone, which constitutes the only true Tundra region in Southern Africa, and the Afromontane Grassland Zone. This makes Lesotho a rich ecological research area with flora unique to the African continent.Lesotho has two national parks and one nature reserve: the Sehlabathebe National Park, the Ts’ehlanyane National Park and the Bokong Nature Reserve. The Bokong Nature Reserve is the highest alpine wetland in the Southern Hemisphere, making it a valuable natural asset to Lesotho.Lesotho is home to some of the rarest and most spectacular species of flowers in the world. The diversity of Lesotho’s flora draws a large number of nature-lovers to the country every year. The flora of Lesotho is predominantly alpine in nature. The national flower of Lesotho, the Spiral Aloe, is endemic to the country. Cape alpine flowers cover the high mountain cliffs and meadows. Spikes of red hot pokers and large aloes dot the whole region. The plant species found in Lesotho number almost 2000, which are divided into various categories. Lesotho has over 400 species of flowers that are found nowhere else in the world. One of the rarest is the Sehlabathebe Lily. It blooms for a short period floating on top of the water. The seeds then sink into the mud, allowing it to survive the long winter. When the pools fill with water in the summer it blooms once again. The high alpine wetlands host over 80 varieties of orchids, most on short spikes with multitudes of miniature blooms which are suited to survival in the harsh, rugged environment. The flowers bloom from October to February, making every trip into Lesotho a unique experience for travellers.

Mohair and Herd Boys

When a mountain boy has learned to walk, swing a stick, and throw a stone, he is already a herd boy. By his teens, he is a full-time herd boy, a “molisana”. He takes the animals to graze each day and returns in the evening. In the highlands, where the animals are driven for the summer, the herd boys build a communal hut out of rock and thatch for shelter. At the end of spring, the sheep and goat shearing process begins. The people and their animals congregate in wool sheds throughout the mountains to shear the precious wool. The world-renowned Angora goats can only be reared in the high alpine areas. Lesotho produces some of the highest quality mohair in the world. Originally exclusively exported, the wool has now become a part of the Basotho culture. Weaving workshops where people card and spin the yarn in collectives have been formed. The herd boys’ dogs have become a breed known for protecting the animals and the herd boys. Conditions are harsh for the herd boys and the animals, but this is Lesotho and they are raised to be able to live in the Mountain Kingdom.

Bushman Paintings

There is a wealth of Bushman paintings to be found in the numerous sandstone caves in Lesotho. The San people left a legacy of art and culture “written” in the paintings under the overhangs found in the mountains. These can be found in numerous locations, but some of the best-known are in Sehlabathebe, Maseru, Butha-Buthe, Moyeni, Mt Moorosi, Leribe and Mokhotlong. The Tosing Caves in the south are known for the unusual size of the paintings, which are larger than most. The Sehonghong Cave is a treasure trove of archaeological discoveries, as are many other caves in Lesotho. Unfortunately, they are still used as shelters and thus are not as pristine as some, as modern-day users have caused a lot of smoke and other damage to the drawings in the caves. Many excellent examples of rock art can still, however, be found in Lesotho and hikers often discover them in caves in the course of their adventures.

Diamonds of Lesotho

The diamond mining industry in Lesotho has contributed substantially to the economy of the country for many years. There are several diamond mines in Lesotho, the most notable of which are Letseng Mine, Mothae, Kao, Likhobong and Lemphane. The mining companies operate in partnership with the Lesotho government in the development of the mines. The mines primarily have vertical kimberlite pipes, together with deposits of alluvial gravels. Letseng Diamonds was granted a mining lease in 1999. The mine produces diamonds which sell for the highest per carat price of any kimberlite mine. The mine has been in commercial operation since 2004, and has a total processing capacity of over 5 million tonnes per year and a recovery of approximately 100 000 carats per year, which makes Letseng Mine the seventh-largest kimberlite mine in the world. Letseng Diamonds has recovered three of the world’s top 20 rough diamonds. These include the 603-carat Lesotho Promise in August 2006, the 493-carat Letseng Legacy in September 2007 and the 478-carat Leseli la Letseng in September 2008. The 601-carat Lesotho Brown found in 1967 also came from the Letseng Mine.

Roof of Africa Rally

The internationally renowned Roof of Africa Rally takes place every year in the Kingdom of Lesotho. This enduro-race started in 1968. It is known as one of the three toughest off-road rallies in the world. The race is run in the Maloti Mountains which, with an altitude of over 3000 metres, are the source of several major rivers. The Maloti’s have mighty valleys and deep gorges gouged into the mountains which the riders must traverse. This rugged terrain in the high alp-like mountains makes for a truly unique rally. The concept of a “race” came from Chief Jonathan who presented the Independence Challenge Bowl for the fastest time across Lesotho from Butha-Buthe to Sani Pass. In the years that followed, it developed into the rally it is today. On the first day the start of the Roof of Africa sees a run through the streets of Maseru. It is one of the few rally in the world where some of the city streets are cordoned off and here the route winds around the houses in Maseru. Then, over the next few days, the most rigorous competition takes place in various locations in the mountains of Lesotho. Competitors come from all over the world to participate in this rally. This world-famous rally is usually held in late November. In the past, the race was open to motorcycles and rally vehicles. Nowadays it is only for motorbikes.

Ditema Village Architecture

Located mainly in the villages of Lesotho which still follow a traditional way of life, you will find Ditema, a form of architecture used by the Basotho to finish the exterior of their rondawels. Villagers plaster the outside walls with mud and then carve various designs and images into the mud finish of their huts. Often the designs are inspired by Lesotho’s traditional blankets and colonial past.

Birds of Lesotho

There is a wealth of birdlife in Lesotho for everyone to enjoy. From the majestic Lammergeyer to the Drakensberg Siskin or Rock Jumper, there’s an abundance of birds to discover. While there are, of course, birds to be seen in most areas of Lesotho, the Bokong Nature Reserve, Sani Pass and the Sehlabathebe National Park would be good places to visit to photograph and view them. Individual bird species are found in different zones based on altitude and types of flora found in the area. The riverine Scrub zone is from 1550 m to 1700 m, the Protea Savanna from 1700 m to 1800 m, the Boulder Bed Scrub and Grasslands from 1880 m to 2400 m and the Subalpine from 2400 m to 2860 m. Interestingly, the Mountain Pipit is known to breed only in Lesotho, although many of the birds migrate for the winter. The best time to watch birds in Lesotho is from November to March. A sight not to be missed is when hundreds of tiny emerald-green Malachite sunbirds create waves of green as they descend to feed on the nectar when the red- hot pokers and spiral aloes are in flower. Come and see some of Lesotho’s finest birdlife for yourself — all you need is a pair of binoculars, a hat and a degree of patience and determination. Most birds can be viewed from your car.

Driving Trips in Lesotho Maseru - Ty - Kome 94 km(Historical and Handicrafts) Travel along the Berea Plateau, the location of the battle between the armies of Moshoeshoe I and Sir George Cathcart in 1852. View Prophet Matita’s grave at Ha Makebenyane. Cross the Seqonoka River and find Matooane’s Fortress at Senyotong on the right-hand side (now Ha Souru). After a stop at TeyaTeyaneng to see the Hatooa-Mose-Mosali, Helang Basali, Setsoto Design and Elelloang Basali Handicrafts galleries, link up with the route to Ha Matjotjo, which leads to the infamous hideout of the Malimong cannibals.Along this road lies the Bokhopa Mountain, which was where a band of cannibals under Rakotsoane waylaid people in the 19th century. Travel on towards Pulane, where the impressive and rather mysterious village of Kome, situated under a rock overhang, was built in about 1842. This unusual village is well worth a visit.

Maseru - Quthing 180 km (Scenic and Historical)

This route includes some of the southern tours of Mafeteng and Mohale’s Hoek. A detour can be made at Mohale’s Hoek to see the cannibal caves at Motlejoa and then back onto the road to Quthing where “negative” or raised dinosaur footprints can be seen at the cave at Masitise. Positive, or indented, footprints can be found at Moyeni, the climax of the tour.

Maseru - Matsieng - Morija 44 km (Historical)

This tour passes through Thota-ea-Moli, former seat of the Traditional Basotho Parliament at Fika le Mohala. Moshoeshoe I International Airport is in this area. Then go on to Matsieng, the King’s country home and Chief Letsie’s old village with its many relics. This can be followed by a walk along the slopes of the mountain to follow the ancient tracks left by dinosaurs. Before touring the village, seek permission from the local chief, whose office is near the Palace. After this, proceed to Morija, a village which is largely unaltered, since it was built in 1843.

Maseru - Katse 216 km (Scenic)

This is perhaps the most rewarding tour, with a challenging ascent up the breath-taking Mphosong Valley with its magnificent Mafika Lisiu Pass – 3090m above sea-level. The Bokong Nature Reserve Information Centre is built at the edge of a 100-metre-high cliff overlooking the Lepaqoa Valley. Numerous birds of prey can be seen, including the Bearded Vulture. The famous Malibamats’o Bridge is a spectacular highlight, with its length of 465.5m and height of 86m. The climax of the trip is the impressive Katse Dam.

Maseru - Semonkong 113 km (Scenic)

This tour passes through the first and second ranges of the Maluti Mountains whose unforgettable peaks and valleys gave Lesotho its world-famous tag as the Mountain Kingdom. Shelters for herd boys, pitched in the wilderness, can be seen by the wayside. The climax of the tour is the awe-inspiring Maletsunyane Waterfall, at 192m one of the highest single-drop falls in the Southern Hemisphere. Maseru - Leribe 94 km (Historical and Handicrafts)

Crossing the Hlotse River for a stop at the Leribe Craft Centre and Home Economics School, the tour continues to the Subeng River to view the dinosaur footprints there. After that, it’s back to Hlotse to see Major Bell’s Tower and the statue of the Unknown Soldier at the District Secretary’s Office.

Maseru - Morija - Malealea 80 km (Historical and Scenic)

The tour passes through the historic Thota-ea-Moli (Fika-le-Mohala), the first seat of Parliament during the reign of Chief Letsie I and then to Moshoeshoe I International Airport and Morija.Take the left fork from the main road at Motsekuoa, then right at Ha Makhakhe to the Gate of Paradise Pass. The Malealea Lodge offers pony rides and hikes to the nearby Bots’oela Falls, rock pools and Bushmen rock paintings in the Pitseng River gorge.

Maseru - Molimo Nthuse - Mohale Dam 83 km (Scenic)

This destination is situated beyond the first range of the Maluti Mountains and at the foot of the Thaba-Putsoa (Blue Mountain Range). The panoramic views of the majestic Blue Mountains is an unforgettable sight, with its undulating mountains and green, grassy shrub-clad slopes and gorges. Arrangements can be made at the Basotho Pony Project for pony trekking. Then continue on to the Mohale Dam, constructed on the Senqunyane River.

Maseru – The Ts’ehlanyane Nature Reserve 150 km(Scenic and Nature)

The Ts’ehlanyane National Park comprises 5600 ha of extremely rugged mountain terrain and is located deep in the front range of the Maluti Mountains. It is reached after passing Hlotse, Khabo, then driving for 32km along a tarred road.

Maseru - Oxbow 192 km(Historical, Scenery, Trout Fishing and Possibly Skiing)

The tour heads north through Berea, Leribe and Butha-Buthe, Moshoeshoe’s mountain fortress. The ‘Muela Hydro-electric power station and the Liphofung Cultural Village can be visited. The Liphofung Cave “the place of the eland” was originally used by the Bushmen and later by King Moshoeshoe as a stopover when he visited that part of the country. There are Bushmen rock paintings and pony trekking is possible. The road to the Moteng Pass is a steep climb, with sharp bends. The view from the summit is magnificent from both sides of the road. Trout fishing is good at the Malibamatso River. Skiing is possible from June to July at the Mahlasela Ski Slope.

Maseru - Roma 35 km (Historical)

Roma was established as the Roman Catholic Mission Centre in Lesotho. Today it is an educational centre, comprising the National University of Lesotho, three high schools and St Joseph’s Hospital. This is where Father Joseph Gerard was beatified in 1988 by the late Pope John Paul II. Further on is the Maphotong Gorge, home to the endangered Bearded Vulture. Roma Valley itself is a spectacular sight, with its massive tracts of arable land.

Maseru - Thaba-Bosiu 35 km (Historical)

Visit the mountain fortress of Moshoeshoe I, which played an important role in establishing the Basotho nation. Climb the plateau and see the ruins of the village and the cemetery, the last resting place of the great heroes, whose ingenuity and foresight, bravery and diplomacy heralded the modern-day Kingdom of Lesotho. Rafutho’s Pass is the chief gateway to Moshoeshoe’s village. Here the remains of the defence walls are still to be seen. It was at this pass that General Louw Wepener, commander of the Boer invaders who tried to capture Thaba-Bosiu, was shot dead in 1865.

Round - Maseru Tour

Visit handicraft centres in the industrial area. Tour the town and see places of historical interest, such as Moshoeshoe’s statue and Gordon’s Tower near St James’ Cathedral. View the Palace from the Lerotholi Road and the Prime Minister’s official residence from Constitution Road. The tour culminates at the Lancers’ Gap to view the town.
