After the splendid performance by Subansiri-Namdang, Kopili-Dhansiri took to the stage with their play “Perfect Façade”. The play had a much more emotional background in contrast to the former production. In the beginning of the story we are introduced to Prachi, the protagonist of the play who is conversing with her mother about her recent happenings and developments in school and her life. Towards the end of the first scene Rishita Dehilia, the comic relief of the play made her debut and with her absolutely perfect comic timing she managed to walk away with the award of Most Promising actress. The scene concludes with Prachi's mother fainting due to 'those pills'. In the next scene we meet an adult Prachi portrayed by Akansha Baruah who is rather apprehensive about her office presentation. With assurances from both her mother and co-worker Varun she aces the presentation and receives a permanent job in the office. She rushes home to celebrate with her mother. Meanwhile it is disclosed by Vani an office assistant that Prachi's mother is long dead due to a drug overdose. In the closing act it is understood that for many years Prachi had fashioned another world where her mother was still alive. This was the defence mechanism she crafted for herself in response to the tragedy that had occurred at a tender age in her life. To cope with the harsh reality, she created one of her own. The final scene was accompanied by the Kopili-Dhansiri's choir with Nanu on the guitar singing the famous The Carpenters number 'Yesterday Once More', deftly adding to the poignancy of the final scene.

The evening was set to a perfect blend of artistic pursuits and achievements as Subansiri-Namdang took to the stage with the first performance of the evening, “Original Lies”. Minimalistic with stage manoeuvre, the script revolved around a chance meeting in an airport lounge between fellow travelers who then tackle their individual mindsets alongside a bomb scare. While young Natasha made her debut on stage, the theatrics of Surya Ranjan Sengupta was nicely balanced between hilarity and political argument. The central premise of the play juggled contemporary topics of discussion ranging from casteism to racism sprinkled with political ideologies. The character of Dr. Amrita Kumari Kovind, the surname a predictable reference, was played by newcomer Nandini Garodia, who took effortlessly to her character of an established Doctor rightfully affronted when discriminated on the basis of her cast. The role of the businessman was played by Devaansh Jalan, the Captain of Dramatics who held the narration of the plot with his character. Sempisang Toy who played Vito Yepthumi, a Naga student attempting to save the day by pointing out to the actual culprit but failing in the face of racism carried his character to a believable end. Carrying a social theme, the script was nicely crafted to allow elements of humour with a liberal sprinkling of political and social discourse and thus went on to win the coveted Best Script award.

Yes MenWith the world still reeling from #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, the WMH was the next to be caught in the whirlwind of Bhoroli-Lohit's 'Yes Men'. A twist in the tale from Ayn Rand's “The Handmaid's Tale” this was a story of a husband turned maid and his tale thereon. Toko Tato's portrayal of the husband Veer had a healthy dose of humour and wit with a generous dose of sarcasm. It was a role crafted for Toko for it seemed to come to him almost effortlessly. The play opened to a society dictated by women where their whims and fancies were meant to be catered to by their husbands who languished under neglect and disrespect. A laugh riot, it nonetheless drove home loud and clear the reality of women across the country. Clad in dhotis, clutching the handbags of their wives and dragging their luggage behind even as they dragged themselves, to complete chores that never seemed to end. Uroolee Changmai as the dominant wife was convincing and Bornam as Veer's Man Friday, is an actor in the making. The script was wonderfully crafted to portray instances so real making the audience naturally connect to it. While humour plays a crucial role in the play, the concept has been well thought out and portrayed. The idea of a society sans gender sans bias won Bhoroli- Lohit the Best Play award.

Trick or TreatThe last play of the evening took the audience down a path of suspense with a gripping twist in the tale. 'Trick or Treat' by Jinari- Manas started off with an ambiguous scene of a mother clutching her baby whose cause of death remained a mystery to the entire audience. The rest of the play showed a different setting, a cheerful scene of a birthday party lit under a shadow of sorrow throughout the play. The mother, Anu's character seemed to be perfect for Tamanna Ahmed as she played out the anguish and despair faced by a mother who languishes under the assumption that she has in some unforeseeable fashion, caused the death of her own child. With a character right in her forte, it was not a surprise that she bagged the award for the Best Actress of the evening. As the story progressed, the audience was introduced to a stream of new characters ranging from the siblings, Varun and Mayla (played by Shubhojit Dasgupta and Sanaya Singh) to Ajay (Nivranshu Baruah), the supportive psychologist whose real face remained unknown to everyone until the end of the play. The comic relief of the entire drama walked onto the stage in the form of three typical nosy neighbours, who had the audience roaring with laughter at the right moments. Special mention must be made of Ragini Chauhan who played the role of a meddlesome neighbour with elan and Jeremy Jahau as the father. Nikhil Baruah, received the award for Best Supporting Actor as he managed to convince the audience that he was just a man struggling with the fate life had thrown at him before finally bringing to light the twist that had him at the pivot of a massive ruse. While the drama went on to win the Best Play award in a tie, it nonetheless left the audience wondering what really was all the ruse about.

Inter-House Western Music-Aakangsha Dutta, XII

Neeraj Barooah played the piano flowing effortlessly between a Bhupen Hazarika to a Beethoven. Lemuel from Dhansiri made his debut in the musical arena playing a classic Chopin on the violin. Bhumika Saharia from Subansiri played the piano. It was a soulful number that captivated the audience from the beginning. Dikshant Nangia, a drummer who has already made his mark in the year gone by, represented Lohit. The entire hall was startled as Dikshant played the drums blindfolded with power and confidence. The next category was that of Western choir and Jinari-Manas began the show led by Senthunglo Yanthem and Nivranshu Baruah. The highlight of their performance was 'How Far I'll Go' from Moana and 'Sophia', a Spanish number. The audience enjoyed themselves thoroughly as the students sang the feet tapping numbers with a lot of energy. Kopili-Dhansiri was next and was led by Judah Abujam. What stood out in the performance was the acapella version of 'Send My Love' that they ended their performance with. Anastasia Lakiang led Subansiri-Namdang as they sang Royals and Don't Stop Believing. More than the selection of songs, the choir impressed the audience with their varied harmonies that accompanied the lead vocalists flawlessly. Jirmin Tok led Bhoroli-Lohit who hit the note with Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' and went on sing Bruno Mars's 'Marry You'. It was a colourful blend of different genres of music which the choir pulled off well. The last category of the evening was the Instrumental Group. Jinari-Manas played a self-composed piece in the genre of Blues. It was delight for both judges and the audience to listen to them as each instrument complemented the other. Kopili-Dhansiri also performed a self-composed piece by juxtaposing various genres into one. Subansiri-Namdang played their own rendition of 'Canon Rock' which appealed to the audience. The final performance of the evening was by Bhoroli-Lohit who played the 'Game of Thrones Theme'. Despite a few technical glitches along the way, they managed to stay true to the theme and delivered a good performance. As the scores were being tabulated, Neeraj performed beautifully a song composed by alumni, Arunav Deka, as a tribute to Ranvir Das.

As the End of Semester Examination approached, the WMH witnessed the penultimate cultural event of this term, The Inter House Music Competition-Western and Indian Category. A race against time and juxtaposed between other must dos, the performances were nonetheless, commendable. The afternoon was devoted to Indian music which opened with vocal solo. This category saw some remarkable performances with Sikunpriya Goswami of Bhoroli winning the first position followed closely by Shagun Agarwal of Kopili in the second position. The next category to follow was group vocal whose theme was the mystic genre of qawali. Kopili- Dhansiri took away the first position singing heartily to a popular 1970's number from the films while Jinari-Manas bagged the second position. This was followed by the Indian Percussion Solo category where the first position was a tie between Bhoroli-Lohit and Kopili-Dhansiri, while in the Instrumental Group the first position again saw a tie between Subansiri-Namdang and Bhoroli-Lohit followed by Kopili-Dhansiri in the second position.

rd3 Position : Jinari-Manasth4 Position : Kopili-Dhansiri

The final House positions are as follows:

The second half of the evening saw a Western Music extravaganza with each House having spent sleepless nights tuning their voices to the perfect pitch. The first category and perhaps the most awaited was the Vocal Duet. Summedha Jamwal and Nitya Bhatt opened the innings for Jinari-Manas with a melodious rendition of ‘Broken Strings'. Riya and Domeeya Methi representing Kopili-Dhansiri followed next with 'Halo'. Although a harmonious performance, one however was left craving for the power of the original track. Subansiri-Namdang came next and were represented by Leander Terang and Lotsullo Sazowho who belted out an effortless version of 'Lucky' complementing each other beautifully. Asmita Kakoti and Shanmen Riddi, both new faces to the field of vocals, took to the stage where they sang Adele's iconic cover 'Make You Feel My Love'. They stunned the audience with their effort at singing a number so intricate despite its simplicity. The next category was the Instrumental Solo.

It helps students develop communication as well as diplomatic skills, which are becoming a necessity in the 21st century. The Assam Valley School hosted an intra-school MUN this year. It was a really enriching and informative experience for many. The delegates eagerly debated and deliberated over an agenda regarding the 'Civil War in Syria'.

Model United Nations, popularly known as MUN, is an activity gradually growing in strength at The Assam Valley School. This activity is dedicated to hone not only oratory skills of a person, but also to encourage them to take stands in certain issues plaguing the world. The most noticeable feature of Model UN Conferences is that resolutions containing unique ideas may be sent to the United Nations for further reading and development.

It is also a good sign that The Assam Valley School is participating in the Indian Public School Conference Model United Nations 2018. We hope that the students win laurels for the school, and come back socially and politically aware citizens.
