Building on Our Mission, 2019

Central Christian Church

Jefferson IA.

As we enter 2019, I want to celebrate with you the blessings that God has given to us here at Central

Christian Church. Blessings of multiple ministry offerings have occurred throughout 2018 within every

gathering of members and with others that we call friends. From youth programs during the week, to

Sunday morning worship and other faith-based events, we have been so blessed with opportunities to

share the Gospel message of God’s love through Jesus Christ. Thank you to everyone who has worked

hard and hung in with me through the tough times and the great ministry mountaintop experiences

of 2018.

2019 is set to be another great year of ministry here at Central Christian Church. On January 6th 2019,

the leadership of Central Christian will be meeting for a mini-retreat to discern what God wants us to

do, or continue to do, to meet our mission statement of “…to act and serve with Christian love as

we witness and expand into our neighborhood and community”. We will be discussing, praying,

planning, dreaming, and setting in motion new ways of being church here in Greene County. I can not

wait to see how the 2019 leadership works through this church’s calling to “Build on Our Mission,

2019”.

Part of that planning and discernment work is already done. The congregation has passed the 2019

budget which includes further financial support for current and future ministries. The biggest chal-

lenge for us in the next 9 months will be to start and complete the construction of a new entry way

that will include an expanded narthex, covered outside drop off area, and elevator. This major renova-

tion is possible, in part, because of previous saints who have blessed Central Christian with different

legacy gifts over the years. Our responsibility this next year will be to engage and partner with all

ministries, including the new construction, in a way that honors God.

We will have many opportunities to volunteer, pray, participate, and support the upcoming year of

ministry. Part of the support needed will be to raise money for the new construction project. The

financial team, executive committee, design team, property committee, and trustees have been

working behind the scenes to fulfill the planning and financial needs of this major project. The pro-

jected overall cost of this new construction (plus a few more updates throughout the rest of the

building) will total right at $500,000. The combined leadership team has set a fundraising goal of at

least $100,000 and the congregation voted to enter into a capital campaign to raise this amount. The

balance of the needed money needed to complete this major project will come for our church’s cur-

rent Legacy Endowment Fund.

The capital campaign will officially get started the first of January 2019 with an end date of Sunday

February 3rd, 2019 with the hopes of raising at least $100,000 to help fund our “Building on Our Mis-

sion 2019” ministry campaign. There are pledge cards available if you do not have one. Please take

some time and be in prayer and discernment in how to support God’s calling us into ministry and

mission here at Central Christian Church for 2019. I look forward to our continued witness of God’s

love through Jesus Christ here in Jefferson IA.

Shalom,

Pastor Sheldon

Many thanks to all who helped out with our Youth in Worship Christmas Program. A great

time was had by all and the sanctuary was full. The kids did an awesome job! We are blessed

by the many volunteers who help out with our Alive & Studio 3:16 programs.

During Christmas Break, Studio 3:16 held a “Winter Break Art Escape” camp for students. Fol-

lowing the camp, 22 adults and youth travelled to Des Moines to package meals for Meals

From the Heartland. We enjoyed pizza and checking out the “Jolly Holiday Lights” before

heading home.

Regular programming resumes Wednesday, January 9th (we have been on break!). We are all

looking forward to seeing our students again and sharing the love of Jesus Christ as we build

relationships in God’s World together.

Youth & Family

Alive meets each Wednesday, 5-6:30 p.m. with a meal included. Gathering time begins

around 4:30 p.m. ALL are welcome!

Studio 3:16 meets each Wednesday, prior to Alive. Doors open at 2 p.m. with open art

studio and scheduled music lessons starting at 3 p.m.

Operations

On line giving is now available through our website: jeffersonccc.org

Board minutes, monthly financials, and other church operations information is available on

the table in the lounge (Communications/Outreach office).

Please see page three of this newsletter for information regarding the capital campaign.

We are blessed and excited as we build on our mission together.

Outreach

December was a busy month for outreach at Central. Thanks to all who helped out with our “Giving Tree”.

Three families were blessed by your giving. And we are continuing to walk with them on their journey.

The Good Samaritan Fund has been a blessing to those in need this winter.

We are working with the Greene County Homeless Coalition to conduct a “point in time” survey of homeless-

ness in Greene County on Wednesday & Thursday, Jan. 30 & 31. Volunteers are needed. If you’d like to be

involved, or for more information, talk to myself or Pastor Sheldon.

Thanks to those who helped out with the Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign as volunteers bell ringers. The

emergency funds have been being utilized to help folks in need right here in Greene County, as we keep 90%

of the money that is collected in the kettles.

Central is responsible for two meals on wheels routes in February. Please stop in the Lounge to sign up.

As we plan for the coming year, volunteers will be needed to fulfil our outreach mission. You can find more

information about how you can be involved in giving back by stopping in the (soon to be) Communications/

Outreach office - the Lounge. We have a lot of exciting opportunities coming up, including a potential Tiny

House for the Homeless project, a mission trip, participation in General Assembly and more. Some fabulous

ideas were offered up at the recent Visioning Retreat and I look forward to working with you as we journey

to build on our mission here at Central.

As I continue to pray on God’s plan for us, I am reminded of some advice a pastor gave me: “If (insert your

church) ceased to exist tomorrow, how would your community miss you?” I feel that we are moving in the

right direction of reaching up, reaching in and reaching out in service. You are all deeply appreciated by many

in this community. May we continue to “Reach Up” (to God), Reach In” (to members of our own congrega-

tion) and “Reach Out” (beyond our walls to our community and world).

If you have any questions or ideas, please feel free to contact me: 515-370-5672 or email:

[email protected]. I keep regular office hours at the church on Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10 a.m. - 2

p.m.

Peace,

Nicole
