SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILE:

Overview

How you present yourself on-line is a personal choice, but this does require some thought and planning. What's the general public's perception of your digital identity?

SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILE:

Q: Have you ever googled yourself?

- what did you find?

- what about photos/video?

- would you mind your current/future employee seeing this?

How to use Social Media effectively - Be Strategic

You have control over the majority of public information about you on-line.

Who is asking for information & do you want/need to provide it?

Where do you want people to find you? (assuming you do want to be found)

Facebook allows extensive privacy controls ... (eg: Share with friends only)

What words/images would you want associated with your name? (formal or casual)

Would you prefer to include your previous/current achievements or what you are currently moving toward?

How to use Social Media effectively - Know your audience

It pays to think about who will be viewing your (various) Social Media Profiles.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Youtube, Pheed, Tumblr, MySpace, Quora, etc.

- Must haves

Your REAL NAME

Contact Information – suggestion, use a gmail account for job applications. Gmail has great spam filters and can be linked to your pop account (email via Eastlink, Sympatico) through Windows Outlook or Apple's Mail program.

If you are on LinkedIn (or another career focused site) - your Resume/Certification

How to use Social Media effectively Avoid! Avoid! Avoid!

Unless you are on a 'closed' or protected account (eg: LinkedIn) it's not a good idea to post all of your contact information, address, cell number, personal email address, etc.

Never engage in – or be draw into a “flame war” on-line.

Avoid leaving overly negative comments on a blog, video or article.

Phishing: Your bank, Facebook, or Twitter account sends you an official looking email asking you to change your log-in info due to some “issue” ... wait a minute!

Can you get your Mojo back? It's possible.

Depends on the size on your on-line ... mis-step. Being seen at “less than your best” on-line can be a digital & personal scar that you carry for sometime after.

What's your defence? If the mistake was yours, take ownership of it. Apologize.

However, if this was a digital fabrication or attack - How was it posted & where? Can you contact the company/site and ask them to provide the access log? Can you locate the IP address that was used? Issue a personal “Press Release”.

DO NOT IGNORE IT.
