“excellence in all we do”
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Last Friday we felt the force of Mother Nature as the powerful hail storms hit our Grevillea Drive main building and many
other Alice Springs buildings and homes. With a large roof area and the hail blocking gutters, our top floor was inundated
with water coming through the ceilings and also entering many ground floor classrooms and offices. The end result was
around 80% of our classrooms and many staff workspaces were affected in a major way, making teaching of classes not
possible for the last week of term.
Faced with over 5cm of water lying in the upstairs Humanities Open Learning Area, an outstanding effort by numerous staff
and local contractors commenced the unpleasant, yet much needed task of sweeping the water out. Most of the upstairs
carpets and many soaked ceiling panels have now been removed
With us unable to continue teaching classes at the main Grevillea Drive building in week 11, the decision was made on
Sunday to transfer students to Centralian Middle School to continue their learning for week 11. As our top priority, Year 12
students continued their timetable classes from Monday. Our Year 10 & 11 students commenced combined classes at
Centralian Middle School from Wednesday.
Thanks to great cooperation and understanding from all students, staff and families, we were able to normalise the learning
for Year 12 students, as best we could. This was our top priority in the critical last week of term 2, leading up to Year 12
semester one exams in the last week of the four week break. Year 10 & 11 students have finished up their semester one
courses in a meaningful manner.
A great team effort by a great community of staff, students and families rallied to continue our focus on student learning.
Over the four week break our focus will be to prepare our facility in readiness for commencement of semester 2.
The last afternoon of term 2 saw teaching staff return to our main Grevillea Drive building to farewell staff leaving –
Sarah Hickmott (Tutor), Karina Fabijan (Reception), Alexandra Woodman (Humanities teacher). To all staff, students
and families have a restful break, reflect on the student reports included with this newsletter and plan how learning
can be improved even further. Tony Collins – Principal

St John Ambulance Cover
Centralian Senior College pays an annual subscription to St
John Ambulance to cover against the cost of ambulance
transportation charges for any students transported from
the College or day excursions during normal school hours.
Students that attend school camps and trips (both within the
NT and interstate) also have a subscription paid to cover
any costs.
This means that parents or carers should not receive a bill
from St Johns Ambulance for any ambulance transportation
in these situations. However, should an invoice be received
please bring the invoice into the College. The College will
confirm that the patient is a current student of the school
and sign off the back of the invoice. The cost of the
ambulance trip will then be covered under our College
subscription.
The Alice Springs Show books are available at the Town Council
and various other places around the town. There are many sections
for children to enter e.g. Agriculture, Art, Cattle, Cooking, Craft,
Dogs, Hobbies, Horticulture, Pets and Animals, Photography and
Poultry. Enter and enjoy yourself at the show.

This year's Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) theme, Privacy in your hands,
reinforces the message that organisations, agencies and individuals must be vigilant in
maintaining a good understanding of their rights and responsibilities for the
handling of personal information.
On 25 May, Centralian Senior College
students were able to participate in a
Privacy Awareness Week Photo Booth
where students had the opportunity to
have their photos taken, including a
framed chalkboard message plus
promotional materials and information
on privacy and cyber safety.

The first ever Clontarf Billy Kart Derby
was held at Yirara College with teams
from Tennant Creek, Centralian
Middle School and Centralian Senior
College Academies participating. The
day represented a term of hard work
from our Academy members who
designed and constructed their Billy
Karts through weekly Clontarf Contact
time. Each team had a budget of $150
to build their Billy Kart, but some
spent as little as $15.
The event consisted of two
components: Vehicle Presentation
and Racing. For the presentations,
teams did a show and tell about their
Billy Karts to a guest panel of judges.
It was great to see the Academy
members speaking so confidently
about their Billy Kart and
demonstrating what they had learnt
along the way.
Without a shadow of a doubt, the
racing was the highlight... it was
action packed and fast paced. Each
team had three sprint races with
Yirara Storm Riders coming out the
victors. Overall it was a fantastic
event which brought the greater
school community together and
developed the skills, abilities and
self-esteem of our Academy
members.

Four Centralian Senior Academy lads braved cool
temperatures over the long weekend to volunteer for the
Finke Desert race on Sunday morning. Ben Williams,
Curtis Bancroft, Felise Naufahu and Ayar Aban were track
marshals for the race which put them in the centre of the
action. The fellas got photos with three of our past Clontarf
members in Dallas Bathern, Tom Ellis and Eddie Hampton,
who competed in the race. Of course they couldn't miss the
chance to have a photo with the Finke Grid Girls to round
off an excellent weekend.

Miss A.R.T. is a free School Holiday
Program that stands for Activate,
Reshape and Transform
It is practical, fun and filled with the
things you do not learn at school.
The Miss A.R.T. Program
runs for five days - Monday
through Friday. There will
be two groups - one for
Senior Teens (ages 16-19)
and one for Junior Teens
(ages 13-15).
The first group for Senior
Teens starts Monday 18
July 2016 and the group
for Junior Teens starts on
Wednesday 20 July 2016.
The venue is to be
confirmed.
Miss A.R.T. is an innovative program for teenage girls that strengthens their self-esteem
and resilience, builds confidence and a self-belief mindset, develops leadership
potential and cultivates their capacity to contribute to society and the lives of others. It
gives them the knowledge, tools and skills for a happy, healthy and confident future.
The content of Miss A.R.T. is based upon the A.R.T. Your Life 7 Week signature program
that was designed especially for women to help them love themselves, their bodies and
their lives. Over 800 women in the Northern Territory and several hundred women
across Australia (via an online option) have done A.R.T Your Life and they have all said 'I
wish had learnt this when I was a teenager' and so, The Miss A.R.T. Foundation was
established.

All Year 10 students participated in the
Love Bites respectful relationship
programme this term. This programme
gives students valuable information and
time to think about healthy and functional
relationships. Students developed hip hop
tracks and posters in the afternoon
sessions to enable their ideas and
messages about respectful relationships to
be conveyed to the wider community. The
posters are currently on display within the
College and some of the hip hop tracks
have been played on ABC radio.
Students did a great job
participating. Thanks also to other
agencies and people (CYMHS, Create,
Clontarf, Girls Academy and Dan the
Underdog) who worked alongside the
school in running the programme.
