Section 2 - Read This First Podcast Publishing Workflows

This section describes 2 publishing workflows and how SPP integrates with them.

Workflow A - 3rd Party Feed You host your feed and audio with 3rd party podcast hosting companies like Libsyn, BlogTalkRadio (see page 28 for full details) , SoundCloud, Spreaker, etc

If you are using a 3rd-party service like Libsyn, BlogTalkRadio, Spreaker, SoundCloud, etc to generate your podcast feed, then your workflow is as follows.

Step 1 - Log into podcast hosting service and create a new episode. Include the title, description, episode-specific image (see screenshot below for where to add the episode image in Libsyn), and your mp3 file. All this information will be added to your episode page on your site when SPP imports the episode.

HAVING TROUBLE? EMAIL OUR SUPPORT TEAM: [email protected] !3

Step 2 - Log into your WordPress site and enter your iTunes URL in the Simple Podcast Press Settings page.

If you don’t know where to find it, simply do a Google search for Your Podcast Name iTunes. Paste your iTunes URL and click Continue. We recommend you use your iTunes URL in order for SPP to pull in all your world-wide iTunes reviews.

If you haven’t released your podcast on iTunes yet, you can use your Podcast Feed instead and click Continue.

Note: This step is reading all your podcast episodes and world-wide iTunes reviews and will take a minute or two depending on how many podcast episodes and reviews you have.

Step 3 - Configure your SPP publish settings. There are a lot of settings on this page, but don’t worry about them all right now. Let’s focus on the publish settings only. At this point, all you need to decide on are the publish settings including:

HAVING TROUBLE? EMAIL OUR SUPPORT TEAM: [email protected] !4

• if you want the automatically created episode post to be set as "published" or "draft"

• which episodes to import (default is all, but you can set it to only import episodes published after a specific date)

• if you want to import the episode image in your podcast feed and set it as the featured image on the post

• the WordPress category you would like to assign the posts to (this is handy if you want to add a menu item on your site to only display your podcast posts)

• author of the post if you have multiple authors on your site.

That is all for now. Scroll to the bottom and click "Save Settings". You can go back and customize the other settings later and they will take effect immediately on all players on your site.

Now you are ready to import all your episodes to your site. You can tell SPP to import all your episodes now (this is done using the "Import New Podcasts Now" button on the bottom of the page). After that, it will automatically check your feed every hour and when it detects a new episode it will automatically create a new post (even when you are not logged into your site)

Tip: At any point in time, you can click the "Import New Podcasts Now" button to check for new episodes and have them automatically imported on your site.

Step 4 - Configure your SPP player and additional settings (see section 3 below)

Workflow B - Self Hosted Feeds If you are using the the Blubrry PowerPress plugin to generate your feed

Step 1 - Log into your WordPress site and enter your iTunes URL in the Simple Podcast Press Settings page.

If you don’t know where to find it, simply do a Google search for Your Podcast Name iTunes. Paste your iTunes URL and click Continue.

If you haven’t released your podcast on iTunes yet, you can use your Podcast Feed instead and click Continue.

If you are just getting started and don’t have a feed yet, you can simply leave all fields blank and click Continue.

This step will take a minute or two depending on how many podcast episodes and reviews you have.

Note: Some features like the Episode Listing Page and Latest Episode Sidebar Player will not work if you don’t enter your podcast feed or iTunes URL. Don’t worry though, you can always go back to the Simple Podcast Press settings page and click the "Reconnect My Podcast Feed Button" and they will start working. Step 2 - Because you are using the Blubrry PowerPress plugin to generate the podcast feed on your site, SPP will simply become your podcast player and will automatically replace your existing PowerPress player.

Note: You will not see the any publish settings or buttons for importing your episodes since they are already on your WordPress site.

Your workflow will not change. You still need to continue add the media URL of your audio file in the PowerPress “Podcast Episode” section while editing your post like you’ve been normally doing.

Note: Your podcast feed will remain untouched and will continue to be powered by PowerPress.

Step 3 - Configure your SPP player and additional settings (see section 3 below)

Section 3 - Plugin Settings

After you’ve entered your iTunes URL or Podcast Feed, you will be taken to the main settings page to configure how you want the plugin to work.

This section is just a general overview. We’ve added a small icon beside most of the settings that will give you more details on what each setting does. Please refer to that for specific details on each setting. .

Don’t forget to click “Save Settings” on the bottom of the page when you are done changing your settings.

The settings page is divided into a few sections:

1. Publish Settings - Here is where you configure if you want the posts to be automatically created and if they should be published right away or saved as a draft for further editing. You can also specify which WordPress category you want these posts to belong to, the author of the post, if you want your to import episode specific art to be imported and set as featured image, and if you want to automatically insert the featured image on top of the post.

Note: Most podcast feeds contain your iTunes channel art as the image for each episode (unless you specifically upload an image for each episode when creating your episode). If you don't want that set as the featured image, we recommend to set the “Enable Podcast Episode Art Import” to Off (default value).

2. Podcast Style Settings - Here is where you can fully customize the look and feel of the podcast player and call-to-action buttons. There are 6 custom buttons that can be configure to link anywhere you like.

HAVING TROUBLE? EMAIL OUR SUPPORT TEAM: [email protected] !8

We also an option to make a button that pops up a LeadPages LeadBox. All you need to do is copy the HTML code provided inside in the publish area of LeadPages account for that specific LeadBox.

LeadPages LeadBox Publish Options:

3. Opt-in Box Settings - Here is where you can enable the opt-in box, customize the look of it, and choose where you want a standard opt-in or a two-step opt-in (A two-step opt-in is when you only show a button with the call to action, and when clicked, a popup will appear for the visitor to enter their name and email to opt-in).

You need to be using a email marketing providers like MailChimp, GetResponse, Aweber, Infusionsoft, etc for this option to work (SPP is compatible with all email marketing providers that provide HTML opt-in form code ).

Log into your email marketing provider and copy the HTML code of the opt-in form provided and paste into the SPP settings "Opt-in form HTML code" box.

Here is how to get the HTML code from MailChimp:

SPP Opt-in Box Settings:

4. Share Settings - Here is where you can add your Twitter handle so when the one-click tweet is used, we append your twitter handle to each tweet in the "Tweet This" feature. This is a great way to get notified when someone re-tweets your content.

Here is where you can also configure the colors of the "Tweet This" and "Clammr This" buttons (see section 4 below for more details).

SPP includes an URL shortener which you can set on each individual post while editing. You can disable this feature or automatically append a prefix to the shortened URL using the "Podcast Episode URL Shortener Prefix" setting. For example if you enter a prefix "episode" and edit a post to set the short link, the word "episode" will always be there for you. Note: the URL shortener is just a nicer looking link to your post and doesn’t replace your long SEO friendly URL of your post.

By default, SPP will put the necessary Facebook meta tags so when your posts are shared on Facebook the podcast episode image will appear. If you have another plugin controlling your Facebook meta tags, you can disable what SPP is doing using the "Disable the Facebook Meta Tags" checkbox.

5. Advanced Tweaks - Most users do not need to enable any of these settings. They contain specific fixes or features that are designed for advanced users.

Section 4 - Enhance Your Show Notes Page

To see all of these features in action, please visit our Simple Podcast Press Demo site

http://demo.simplepodcastpress.com

There are several nice features you can add to your show notes page to enhance your listener’s experience.

1. Adding the audio player anywhere in your post If you would like to manually insert the audio player at a specific location in your post, the you can click on “SPP: Insert Audio Player’ button on the post editor toolbar.

If you want to add the Simple Podcast Press player to an existing post, you can use the following shortcode

[spp-player url="http://youraudiohost.com/youraudio.mp3"].

HAVING TROUBLE? EMAIL OUR SUPPORT TEAM: [email protected] !12

If you want to customize the player for a specific post, you can do that by adding the following options to the [spp-player] shortcode.

Options Description Values optin Turn on/off opt-in On or Off ctabuttons Turn on/off call-to-action buttons On of Off poweredby Turn on/off "Powered By Simple Podcast Press" On of Off textabove Set your own post specific text above the player. Your Own Text

Here is an example:

2. World-Wide iTunes Reviews: Inside your WordPress dashboard home page you will see your 5 latest world-wide iTunes reviews. To view all the reviews click on the Simple Podcast Press settings on the left hand side of your WordPress dashboard and choose “iTunes Reviews”. These reviews are updated every 24 hours.

HAVING TROUBLE? EMAIL OUR SUPPORT TEAM: [email protected] !14

You can also showcase your reviews anywhere on your site in a variety styles. The easiest way to do this is to click the “SPP: Insert Reviews” button on the toolbar inside the post editor. This will add the [spp-reviews] shortcode which by default will display your reviews in a slideshow mode (one review at a time cycling through all your 4 or 5 star reviews automatically every 10 seconds).

If you want to change the look of the review, you can edit the [spp-reviews] shortcode as follows:

To display a list view of your ALL your reviews [spp-reviews style=“list”]

To display a list view of your latest 3 reviews [spp-reviews max=3 style=“list”]

HAVING TROUBLE? EMAIL OUR SUPPORT TEAM: [email protected] !15

3. Automatic URL Shortener with Episode Detection: Each time you create a new podcast post, the plugin will automatically try to figure out the episode number from the Title of the post and display it below the post editor for you to see.

Once this post is published you will automatically have a shortened URL as shown in the image that will redirect people to your main post. It will still keep the long-tailed url of your post for SEO purposes.

Note: If you like to add a prefix before the number, for example something like “episode” before the actual number you can setup that up to happen automatically in the Simple Podcast Press settings page using the option called “Podcast Episode URL Shortener Prefix”.

Note: If you notice issues with the shortened URLs pointing to the wrong posts, can you check and edit the shortened URLs from the Simple Podcast Press->URL Shortener page.

4. One-Click Tweetables (Tweet This): While editing a post, you can highlight any text and click the “Make Clickable Tweet” button to make it easily tweetable on your page. In the Simple Podcast Press settings page you can even set your twitter handle so it tags you each time.

HAVING TROUBLE? EMAIL OUR SUPPORT TEAM: [email protected] !16

This is what it would look like on your published page. You can customize the color in the Simple Podcast Press settings under the Share Settings section.

5. One-Click Clammrs (Clammr This): Clammrs are 24 second sound bites that can be instantly shared (and listened to) on Facebook on Twitter.

Now you can make is super easy for listeners to "Clammr" sound bites of your episode by cueing up the start times (and optionally end times) for them. This is done by simply typing your text in your post in this format:

MM:SS This is an awesome Clammr MM:SS

Highlight the text and click the "Clammr This" button in the post editor toolbar.

The first MM:SS represents the start timestamp of the Clammr

The last MM:SS represents the end timestamp of the Clammr. If you don’t include this, it will automatically be set to 24 seconds after the start time.

Here is what it looks like on your site. When someone clicks on the "Clammr This" text it will cue up the Clammr at the exact start time (and optionally the end time)

6. Clutter-free Transcripts / Show Notes: Many Podcasts now provide transcripts or detailed show notes for their listeners. Sometimes these can be long and can clutter your post. Not any more.

You can now add a transcript/show notes section that is collapsable, so your visitors can click to expand and read them when they like. The good thing is that they are still visible to the search engines.

There are two ways to do this (we recommend method 1)

Method 1 - Enter your full transcript in the post editor, then add the [spp-transcript] … [/spp-tanscript] shortcode around the transcript text. This allows you to fully utilize all the editor functions like headlines, colors, etc inside your transcript.

Here is what the output will look like on the page. Note that you can customize the title “Read Full Transcript” in the Simple Podcast Press settings.

HAVING TROUBLE? EMAIL OUR SUPPORT TEAM: [email protected] !18

Method 2 - Use the Podcast Transcript Box below the post editor . To create these, just copy and paste your transcript/show notes in the “Podcast Transcript / Show Notes” box below your post while in the post editor

Note: No font formatting options are available with this method.

Then using the toolbar click inside the post editor itself place the cursor at the location where you want the transcripts/show notes to appear and click the “SPP: Insert Transcript” from the toolbar

7. Podcast Archives To display a list of all your episodes along with a download link and a link to the episode page on your site, you can use visit any page or post on your site and click the “SPP: Insert Episodes Table” inside the editor and it will insert the shortcode that will display the table

Here is a sample of what this table looks like. For each episode, the Episode title is clickable and will link to the individual podcast episode page.

HAVING TROUBLE? EMAIL OUR SUPPORT TEAM: [email protected] !20

8. Clickable Timestamps

You can easily and automatically add clickable timestamps to your episode page.

Clickable timestamps allow your listeners to click on a link that contains a time inside your show notes page and the podcast player will automatically jump to that time.

Setting this up is super simple. While editing your post, enter a time in either HH:MM:SS or MM:SS format and it will automatically become clickable when your listeners visits the published page (yes…you don’t have to do anything, it just detects it automatically!)

If you don’t want your time stamps to be clickable, you can disable this feature in the "Advanced Tweaks" section of the Simple Podcast Press settings.

If you notice that the auto timestamp detection is not working, you can manually make any timestamp clickable like this:

a. Select and highlight that time

b. Click the “SPP: Insert Clickable Timestamps”

Section 5 - Enhance Your Sidebar

Simple Podcast Press includes a two sidebar widgets to showcase your latest episodes and latest reviews.

1. Latest Episodes: You can easily add a sidebar widget to your site that will always play your latest episode. You can choose to display your artwork or just a call to action button for people to subscribe to your podcast on iTunes.

To add this, you simple go to “Appearances->Widgets” inside your WP Dashboard.

Drag the box called “Latest Podcast” anywhere you like on your sidebar.

HAVING TROUBLE? EMAIL OUR SUPPORT TEAM: [email protected] !22

2. Podcast Reviews: You can easily showcase your world-wide iTunes reviews on your sidebar and customize their look and feel. Only 4 and 5 star reviews will be showcased on your site.

To add this, you simple go to “Appearances->Widgets” inside your WP Dashboard.

Drag the box called “Podcast Reviews” anywhere you like on your sidebar.

You can choose between a “List” view (static list with a fixed number of reviews set by the Number of Reviews option) or “Slideshow” which cycles through your reviews randomly, showing them one at a time for 10 seconds each.

Section 6 - Troubleshooting

1. Player Issues: If you ever notice strange behaviour like podcast posts no longer importing or players not showing up anymore, the quickest thing to do is go to the SPP settings page, scroll to the bottom, and click the "Reconnect My Podcast Feed"

This will take you back to the settings page that asks you to enter your iTunes URL or podcast feed and re-sync your feed with the site.

Don’t worry, all your settings and posts will be preserved. You can click this button as many times as needed.

2. Licensing issues: We highly recommend you keep the SPP plugin updated to the latest version.

Note: If your license has expired, you will not be able to update your plugin and receive all the latest features.

Here is how to check if you are running the latest version: • Visit the Plugins section in your WordPress dashboard • Scroll down to Simple Podcast Press (it should be highlighted in red) • Click the "update now" link.

Note: If you don’t see the "update now" link simply refresh the page and it will appear.

Section 7 - Add-ons

The main Simple Podcast Press plugin comes bundled with a powerful podcast player and tools designed to grow your audience.

As new features roll out, we may include them in the main Simple Podcast Press plugin or may decide to release them as a separate optional plugin (we call them add-ons) depending on the functionality it provides.

Here is a list of the existing add-ons and a brief description of how they work.

Note: These add-on will not work on their own. You must have the main Simple Podcast Press plugin installed and activated on your site (some add-ons may also require additional plugins to work)

1. Smart Podcast Player Add-on: Price: Free

Download Link: https://simplepodcastpress.com/smartaddon

Prerequisite: You must have the Smart Podcast Player plugin installed.

Description: This add-on lets you add the powerful features of Simple Podcast Press such as email opt-in, subscribe buttons, Clammr integration, and clickable timestamps to your Smart Podcast Player.

HAVING TROUBLE? EMAIL OUR SUPPORT TEAM: [email protected] !26

The add-on works in two ways:

a. If you are currently using the Simple Podcast Press player on all your existing show notes pages, enabling this add-on plugin will instantly and automatically replace all the players on all your show notes pages with the Smart Podcast Player Single Track Player.

b. If you are currently using the Smart Podcast Player Single Track Player on your show notes pages, enabling this add-on plugin will instantly and automatically add the Simple Podcast Press buttons and email opt-in buttons (based on your SPP settings page) below the Smart Podcast Player Single Track Player.

Note: By simply de-activating the plugin, all the players on your site will return to the way they were before.

5. Inside the Simple Podcast Press settings, go to the Publish settings and configure which category and you want the WordPress posts to be created under. Also configure whether you want your posts to be published right away or set as drafts.

6. Scroll to the bottom and Save Settings.

7. The first time you configure the plugin, you will need to manually import all your episodes. To do this, simply click the "Import New Podcasts Now" button.

Note that this will take a few minutes depending on how many episodes you have. After a few minutes, you should see posts automatically created in your WordPress->Posts section (check both "Drafts" and "Published")

If you have over 100 episodes, you might see the spinning icon go on forever. That is normal. Simply refresh the page after 5 mins and click the "Import New Episodes" button again to continue importing the rest of the missing episodes. You may need to repeat this a few times.

8. Going forward, you don't need to manually import new episodes anymore. Each time you publish a new episode on BlogTalkRadio, a new WordPress post will automatically be created on your site within 1 hour. If you need it sooner, you can always go to the Simple Podcast Press settings and click "Import New Podcasts Now" anytime you like.
