Reporting in about Two Projects.Among Cleanet.org’s Many Friends:

1.Mobile Climate Science Labs

2.International Climate Change Education Portal

3

I.) Mobile Climate Science Labs

• Hands-on Science Activities, Demonstrations, and Labs

• Involving students, teachers and the public in real physical scientific discovery. Exploring the basic underlying evidence.

• As for the last 10 years – saying hello at conferences, science museum events, agency public events, teleconferences.

• Experienced specialists in hands-on climate science education

Where presented

• Venues (as on webpage, screenshot)

• Primarily in Northern California

• Engaging 100,000’s of students, public

• Working with, helping 1,000’s of teachers, student teachers, assistants, future teachers

In K-12 schools

• Delivering the State Science Content Standards

• National standards. Climate Literacy Principles. AAAS 2061.

• Academic Courses (STEM)

• Hands-on. Investigation and Experimentation. Schools, teachers, kids starving for.

10 Essentials** with two absolute musts

1. Vetted Science **

2. Safety **

3. Education theory

4. Reproducible, affordable, scalable

5. Fun, Engaging, Active

6. Artistic, skilled

7. True, not token, hands-on science

8. Diverse communities

9. Green practices

10. Ethics. Fostering community among climate science educators

21

22

The Ultimate in Scalability

• While best is actual first hand involvement, experience. Equally true that electronic media is most effective in reaching largest audience.

• Seeing ones peers do the science live is suitable for broadcast as much as any other images and sounds.

• This is scientific evidence that any American can experiment with, test themselves. (Still the need for experts, research out of everyday range.)

• The ultimate in scalability. Yet respect perspectives that may not see as desirable. Not preferred.

23

24

What understand Cleanet.org and agencies aren’t in a position to do.

Wouldn’t ask for. What are hoping for, however.

25

26

27

Benefits far stronger than (desirability) drawbacks some might express

• Complements and enhances climate literacy work of Cleanet.org and research agency E&PO’s.

• So many pros in science education, service to the American people. Comes from teachers, students, scientists…

• Considerations of how this being around helps to keep noses clean (avoiding muck).

28

29

Public appreciation and supportof Cleanet.org and agency work

• Bridge between what public has experienced, takes seriously, played with, has tested for themselves; truly understands and believes – to:

• What hearing from the experts, told by authority is important to know.

• The need for continued federal funding of research in climate and energy science and technology.

• What are all those satellites, buoys and climate modelers doing anyway? Do we think what they do is valuable, based on reality and meaningful scientific evidence?

31

32

33

II. International Portal

• Quick look around. Screenshots or on web.

• And there’s Cleanet.org. (e.g. na > us > federal)

• Integrating with other portal sections (e.g. K-12 schools)

• Networking with hubs, portals around the world

• Learning from one another, countries on every continent.

• United States founded by drawing from models, practices in Europe and around the world, native organizations (e.g. federations), then innovating.

• We are a part of the international community.

• Some comparisons of attitudes and programs – when exploring the world of climate education and literacy.
