Must be able to hold the full maximum unbalanced load in suspension in shaft• Achieved by placing brakes on the drum or drive
system of a Keope
Must be able to stop a maximum unbalanced load at full speed within a design tolerance distance• Also achieved by brake on drum• Over-wiend Story at Carr Fork

More Braking
All braking systems so far clamp down on drum to stop travel - what if rope breaks
Use jaws with teeth that dig into guide rails for skip. Rope tension keeps them open - if lost the close• Very destructive braking system - tear up
guides• Better dropping a skip into bottom of the shaft
