TRANSCRIPT
1) BE PREPARED – Take résumé, pen/erasable pen, notebook, white-out. 2) FOLLOW DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY –
• Read entire form carefully before filling it out.
• Don’t be afraid to ask a few questions if you don’t understand something.
• Double-check your application before turning it in. 3) BE NEAT –
• Print neatly, use your best printing
• Take your time.
• Don’t fold, tear, or smudge your application form.
• If you can, get an extra application to practice.
• If you can’t, xerox copy the application. 4) DON’T LEAVE ANY BLANK SPACES –
• Leaving part of the application blank shows that you have missed or ignored a space.
• Write “N/A” (Not Applicable) or “Does not apply.”
• Avoid writing inappropriate terms like, “Anything,” “Whatever,” or “Doesn’t matter.”
• Remember to sign & date your application. 5) BE HONEST & POSITIVE - Quit - “Left to seek new challenges” “Seeking increased responsibility” “Seeking opportunity to use creativity” “Pursuing education” Laid Off - “Reduction in force” “Store closure” Fired/Terminated – “Will explain in interview”
6) BE SPECIFIC – Be specific about your work description on your application.
Don’t assume the employer knows how good of a worker you are. Write down any skills, tools, and equipment you used. Describe your job duties specifically.
7) ATTACH RESUMÉ – Staple your résumé to the front of the application
unless your employer tells you otherwise. 8) TURN IN APPLICATION TO MANAGER – This will give your application a face
with a name. The employer will know who you are instead of looking at a stack of applications. Sometimes the manager will ask you for an interview on the spot (if you’re lucky!)
9) WRITE THE DATE YOU APPLIED IN YOUR PLANNER – This allows you to
follow-up on your application within a planned timeframe (1-2 weeks). Following up on your application will leave a lasting impression on the employer.
10) STAY POSITIVE! – You may face many rejections before a company finally
realizes how much a valuable worker you are. The more you try, the more experience you get, and the more chances you have to get a job!
10 Tips continued…

JOB INTERVIEW TIPS
When you meet someone new, you size them up. In about a minute, you can decide whether or not you like them. Hiring managers are good at sizing people up too. They see lots of job applicants and they can tell in a flash who’ll fit in and who won’t. In a job interview, the goal is to show that you fit in. Here’s how:
• Gentlemen: 1. Ironed collared shirt, khaki pants/slacks, dressy shoes; No bright, flashy
colors/designs. Stick to neutral/low-key colors (white, black, beige, blues, etc.) 2. Shave! – A two-day stubble may look great on the weekend, but not in a job
interview 3. Body piercings – Take out earrings, nose rings, tongue rings 4. Brush your hair – can’t wear hats/beanies, hoods, etc.
5. Cologne – Odors linger. Be careful not to over-do it
• Ladies: 1. Ironed clothes – blazer & dress pants, skirt (knee length or longer), dressy
shirt/dress (nothing low cut, strapless, or spaghetti strap); No bright, flashy colors/designs. Stick to neutral/low-key colors (white, black, beige, blues, etc.)
2. No excessive jewelry – one pair of earrings, a watch, a ring, and a necklace – that’s it!
3. Make-up – In an interview, less is more. The idea is to look professional so you’ll be taken seriously.
4. Perfume – Odors linger. Be careful not to over-do it.
• Everyone: 1. Get a good night’s sleep 2. Be clean – having clean nails, teeth, hair, use deodorant, clothes, and face makes
an impression on the employer 3. Have a firm handshake – show that you’re confident! 4. Offer a professional greeting – “Good morning, thank you so much for taking the
time to interview me for your ___________________ position.” 5. Use proper English! 6. Be enthusiastic! – Hiring managers agree, enthusiasm separates the hired from the
unhired. They want enthusiastic and motivated workers! 7. Use good body language – eye contact, good posture, smile 8. Do your homework about the company/product – show that you would be a
knowledgeable employee
9. Participate in the conversation – the interview should be a 50/50 conversation. Don’t be a motor-mouth who never stops talking and don’t be a zombie who hardly talks at all. Listen. Ask questions. Give generous answers.
BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT THE DOOR
1. Never bring anyone with you to a job interview. Go alone. 2. BE PREPARED –
• Bring extra copies of your resume and carry them in a simple manila folder.
• Bring your social security card/ID
• Bring a small notebook/good pen to take notes – write manager’s name, department, address, and phone number, etc.
3. Arrive 10 minutes before the interview begins 4. If something happens and you’re going to be late – call the manager 5. Relax – look at the interview as an opportunity to “talk stores”
professionally
