Negotiations are in progress for dates inother countries, including the UK,Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, and assoon as we have any furtherinformation, we will send anotherbulletin out to all members.

The line-up for the tour will include theband which recorded Nexus, i.e. Johnand Woolly, naturally, Craig Fletcher onbass, and Kevin Whitehead on drums.They will be joined by Jeff Leach onadditional keyboards. Jeff played livewith Barclay James Harvest in 1997 andalso contributed to the River Of Dreamsalbum.

This tour will mark the first occasionthat Woolly has appeared live since1982, and the first time that John andWoolly have appeared on the samestage since the BJH gig in Munich onJuly 1st, 1979. Yes, it’s soiledunderwear time! Although both Woollyand John are very keen to play in theUK as soon as possible, there’s a certainsymmetry to picking up the story in thesame country where they left off almosttwenty years ago.

Monika and I will be travelling toGermany for as many of the shows aswe can, and will definitely be at theconcerts in Siegen and Berlin, so I hopethat we will be able to meet some ofyou there.

As usual, it’s not possible for us toorganise transport, tickets or backstagepasses for club members, but I knowthat John and Woolly will be happy tochat to as many of you as they can.Regarding tickets, it should be possibleto get in on the night, but should youfind yourself stuck outside a sold-outgig without a ticket, ask for us and we’lldo what we can to help.

At the time of writing, Nexus was duefor release on February 22nd, so copiesordered through Swallowtail shouldhave been despatched by the time youread this. As ever there’s a possibility oflate changes to the release date, so ifyou haven’t received your order yet,please check with us to ensure that theCD has been released before panicking!

John and Woolly travelled to Germanyfor a short promotional tour of radio andTV stations and press interviews inFebruary. In the run-up to the album’srelease, the response from the recordcompany, media etc. was veryencouraging - let’s hope that this istranslated into airplay, press coverageand, most importantly, sales!

One unfortunate aspect about whichmany fans have commented is the factthat the concerts and the album werewidely reported and advertised as beingby Barclay James Harvest. We havespoken to John, Woolly and themanagement - they did not approvethis, and have taken steps to correct itwhich should be reflected in lateradverts. The agreed title for both thealbum and tour is Barclay JamesHarvest Through The Eyes Of John Lees,and the same form of words will alsobe used to promote Les’s album andtour in the future.

Les and Mel

We haven’t forgotten about Les and Mel- it’s just that all the action at themoment revolves around John andWoolly. There’s no news at presentabout Les and Mel’s current activities,but as soon as there is anything toreport, we will, of course, give it thesame extensive coverage in NL.

A Major Fancy

We’re still waiting on confirmation of adefinite release date for the CD issue ofJohn’s A Major Fancy, which is plannedfor mid-price release by Eagle Records,but will let you know further details assoon as we can. We are still planning toissue an exclusive boxed edition throughSwallowtail, although this may not beavailable until after the standard versionhas been out for a while.

Other CD News

The Voiceprint label edition of Woolly’sSongs From The Black Box CD will bedeleted later this year. It is possible thatthe M�stoso album may be reissued insome form at a later date, but the otherBlack Box songs may not appear again,so this could be the last chance to gethold of them. We will get a good stockin before they are deleted, and soshould be able to keep the CD availablefor the foreseeable future, but oncethey are gone, that’s it!

We’ve managed to obtain limitedsupplies of both the Everyone IsEverybody Else and Caught In The LightCDs, which are deleted in Germany butstill seem to be available in the UK.Ironically, we are having to pay morefor them than for German imports, sothe prices on the enclosed order formare slightly higher than before.

Get autographed Early Morning OnwardsCDs from Swallowtail! We have a verylimited number of copies of this CD forsale, which have been autographed byJohn and Woolly. They will be given tothe first people to order both of theBrimstone CDs, that is Early MorningOnwards and Once Again (quad mix).

Several of you have asked about thechances of any unreleased radio and/orlive material being made available(legitimately!), and although we don’thave any definite news on that score,Eagle Records are looking at thepossibility of issuing such recordings,which could include historic items suchas the 1972 BBC In Concert with theorchestra or the 1984 Wembley show.

Look out for a glowing review of Nexusin the March/April edition of newmagazine Classic Rock, which will be onthe stands in February. Nine out of tenstars, no less...

We were also pleasantly surprised thatQ magazine not only reviewed both ofBrimstone’s BJH CDs in their February1999 issue (left), but also gave themquite a fair write-up. Record Collectoralso gave them a glowing review(below) in their February 1999 issue.The CDs were re-promoted when wenegotiated a production and distributiondeal with rpm/Thunderbird. It’s unlikelythat Brimstone will be able to licenseany more of the band’s material forrelease in the near future, so we plan tobranch out into releasing deservingalbums by artists in a similar vein.

Harvest Box Set

Not, unfortunately, a BJH box set, butinteresting nonetheless, as it’s a five-CD set in the pipeline, covering thehistory of the Harvest label from 1969to 1979. Barclay James Harvest will berepresented by at least three songs(“Mocking Bird”, “Medicine Man” and“Mother Dear” are on the provisionaltrack-listing) and it’s possible that theband’s dubious alter ego, Bombadil,will also make an appearance.

The set, which has the working titleHarvest Supper, is being coordinatedby Tim Chacksfield for EMI, and Timhas interviewed many of the artistswho recorded for the label, includingWoolly. The set will also includeluminaries such as Pink Floyd, DeepPurple, The Pretty Things, The Move,The Electric Light Orchestra, Be BopDeluxe, Wire and many more.

... Club member Ray Jarvis, who washolidaying on the Greek island ofKalymnos last summer, was surprisedto hear “Poor Man’s Moody Blues” onthe sound system of a taverna in theresort of Massouri. It turned out thathe was listening not to Gone To Earth,but to the compilation album entitledThe Greatest Love Collection (Mercury515 977-1), which also includes songsby The Righteous Brothers, 10cc,Elton John and others...

For Sale:Preston House

For the fan who has everything(except common sense), this could bethe ultimate in Barclay James Harvestmemorabilia! Preston House was theoriginal 16th century farmhouse wherethe band lived, worked and wrotesome of their classic songs in the earlyyears. As you can see from the picture(and the price), it’s barelyrecognisable these days from thetumbledown farmhouse that the bandknew (and loved?).

John and Woolly’s Guide to NexusSpecial thanks to Woolly and John fortaking some time on to give us aninsight into the songs on Nexus.

Festival!

As previously mentioned, a song"assembled" in the studio. One buildingblock is a guitar riff from an unrecordedBJH song called "Wandering". Throw insome of the tonality of "Lives On TheLine", a grim waltz and liberalreferences to hippydom, middle-age,mud and... voila! (The crowd is a real,genuine BJH audience!).

The Iron Maiden

Thirty years on and it's getting there. Amore spacious tempo and a particularlysuitable "muted string orchestra"sample make it more reflective.Extending the guitar part and adding arecorder gives it its authentic feel, andwhereas the original ended with a“Tierce de Picardie” B major, this timeit’s F sharp.

Brave New World

The original 1971 version, demoed atAbbey Road on acoustic guitar, showedits folk roots and had a chorus thatseemed inappropriate to its disillusionedmessage. A more contemporary salsafeel and references to "Galadriel" and"Brother Thrush" continue in the samevein. The guitar solo is not what youwould expect - it surprised us all.

Hors d'Oeuvre/Mocking Bird

Although "Hors" is treated as acompletely separate element it doesreturn in modified form in the final partof the centre section. A darker "MockingBird", this. Of all the re-makes, it wasemotionally the most difficult. You canchange notes, but you can't changesentiment! The final "do it one moretime" is not an appeal for more...Thanks go to Ian Brownbill for hiscornet solo.

Sitting Upon A Shelf

For some reason this song never sawthe light of day. Written in 1969,perhaps it smacked too much of thenon-specific and really found it hard tocompete with the other songs beingoffered at that time. Still, it has nopretence to be anything other than asimple melodic effort, albeit apsychedelic one.

Hymn

Less strumming, more pace and leadguitar replaces the original’s horns. Thecarillon that forms the background ofthis revisit was already in the "library"before it was applied to "Hymn". It onlyrequired a move from minor to majorand a shift in key to make it cyclebetter. An extra D Major here and thererings the changes. Additional heavenlysinging by Sarah Pickering.

The Devils That I Keep

This and "Float" started life as parts ofone song - the only evidence now is asimilarity between the opening (andclosing) section of "Devils" and theshort heroic section following the repeat(un-sung) chorus of "Float". The centredrama may yet appear again!

Titles

Slower, longer, less obvious. If youlisten to those Beatles' songs thatinspired it, you realise that even thosereferences have "moved on". For someunexplainable reason, “Fixing A Hole”has become Bernard Cribbins’ “Therewas I, digging this hole”!

Float

Whatever you think of this piece youhave to thrill a little to the stonking Eflat major chord towards the end. Itmay be the loudest thing on the disc!John's guitar and the French hornsbattle it out in the middle, but the fallingwhole-tone scale is finally victorious anddrags us off into deeper waters.

Loving Is Easy

Still risque - but now laid back. Theoriginal was ponderous and ratherobvious. This version - less smutty-slut,

more smoothy-groove. Harmonica andguitar dovetail nicely -and the wholething ends in hysterical laughter. Allright!! (all right??)

Star Bright

The one item that existed absolutelyfrom its birth to its demise. The harp 'n'bass pluck marks its inevitable progress- it had to end this CD in true BJH style.

Feedback

Deeply Disappointed

Of course we can hardly wait anylonger to listen to Nexus - also we’relooking forward to seeing John andWoolly live on stage. Yet we’re deeplydisappointed in this development andhow it is handled.

For us, BJH is John, Les and Mel, andunless all three of these guysannounce that Woolly has rejoined astheir fourth member, BJH will remainthis unit.

The forthcoming so-called "BJH tour"will be undertaken by John only andFOUR guest musicians (anyway,what’s wrong with the promoter tomislead paying customers in thisway?).

But what really hurts are John’sstatements like "The soul of BJHdisappeared when Woolly left". Howmust Les and Mel feel? According toJohn, BJH was nothing but a big lie -and we believed this lie and evenloved it so much. And adored it sovery much.

We’re sad about this new situation andare really sorry for Les and Mel, too.Anyway, we wish John and Woolly allthe best and keep our fingers crossedfor the CD and the tour!

Looking Forward

Choosing the top 10 songs was ratherdifficult - there are so many otherworthy contenders! However, I amstill drawn to including songs (andalbums, also) from the time when thegroup functioned as a 4-piece - theirrecent songs, although pleasant andmelodic, have lacked that groupfeeling, i.e. the soul, since Woolly’sdeparture.

I wish John and Woolly well in theirnew venture and am looking forwardto their first gig together in 1999! Ihope Les is successful in pursuing hismusical interests, and will continue tosupport him in whatever project he isassociated with. I wish Mel success inthe musical field he chooses toexplore, with or without John, Les andWoolly.

One day it may come to pass that BJHreunite or reform, but for now I agreethat it is time for a parting of theways.
